Nation,
Anyone old enough to remember a long years ago, there were two shooters that changed the way games were played. UT99 and UT2k4. These shooters had something that no shooter to this day has. So, in the memory of these games, I give you why these were the best shooters. Also why we need a sequel to UT2k4.
1. None of this Regen Health Bullshit - You needed to stay the fuck alive.
2. No Melee Attacks - Before Halo came out, I never knew it was possible to attack physically with a gun...this is the stupidest thing I've heard of.
3. Realistic Damage - UT99 and UT2k4 were the first games to realize that it took 4-5 rockets to the face to kill someone. All this new shit kills you with splash damage with a rocket. Bullshit.
4. Double Jump/Wall Running - This makes sense...and it's a shame other shooters aren't doing it.
5. No Reload - Before these modern day shooters...I never knew the "R" key was used for anything. Reloading a gun is stupid and makes no sense in shooters.
6. Mods (AMAZING MODS) - UT2k4 and UT99 are still the only shooters with better mods than most retail games. Killing Floor is proof of this.
7. Double Domination - One of the greatest game modes in the history of gaming.
8. Bombing Run - It's FUCKING FOOTBALL WITH GUNS!
9. Community Without Kids - UT99 and UT2k4 were a man's game, which needed skill and power. We didn't have kids screaming "fag" on XBL, we had men typing it out.
10. Over 2000 maps - Give me any current game with this many maps.
There's so many other things. So I hope fellow oldies like myself help out and explain why UT99 and UT2k4 were the last real shooters. I will miss them forever...and I really hope they make the sequel to UT2k4.
UT99 and UT2k4: The Last Real Multiplayer Shooters
Unreal Tournament 1999 and Unreal Tournament 2004 were and are two very, very fine FPS games. I honestly cannot disagree with many of your points raised as like you said both these two games required a tremendous amount of skill to become decent at playing. And the sheer number of Mods, custom files etc for both games turned them into entirely new games altogether and that isn't even including the huge influx of Map Packs and such like the community and developer created. Honestly two very brilliant games and thinking about them now I'm all nostalgic, especially for UT99.
they are also loaded with cheaters and Epic Games never cared to try to stop them
CS probably has more maps, but you have to reload which apparently sucks

CS 1.6 might have more maps but everyone plays Dust....so what's the point?
Following the poor reception that UT3 received, the success of TF2 and L4D, I'm not sure the general public is really interested in returning to the Unreal franchise anytime soon. I agree both those games are awesome, and UT99 is on my top 5 of all time list, but I believe most people are looking for more than just a run-and-gun experience from their FPSs.

They both had a melee weapons, not quite the same as a mellee attack but not all that different eighter. UT99 had the impact hammer, great fun when playing with friends on Face and standing in front of the top portal with a fully charged impact hammer waiting. I guess that the main difference is that you had to charge the impact hammer for it to kill.
Can't quite rememebr what 2004 had for melee.
UT99 and UY2k4 were great fucking games, but when I played UT3 it was a complete piece of shit. Hey at least we still have Team Fortress 2 and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising coming out this summer.
Hmm, see, I really like first person games but I could never get heavily into Unreal Tournament, the style of gameplay and the skills required dont interest me that much. It's a lot more sporadic, twitch based which is the opposite of like turn based strategy which I sometimes like (sometimes hate). Kind of reminds me of having a seizure lol
i kind of enjoyed playing with bots by myself so, i know thats retarded...

Many of the same things you claim to want apply on a multitude of shooters... You act as if every game has regenerating health, every game has 'realistic' damage models and melee attacks... If you want it so pure, you might as well go play Quake 1, or Deathmatch Classic if you want it to look a little nicer. Or the multitude of Quake (and in some cases Unreal) inspired shooters like Nexuiz and Alien Arena. I guess even Team Fortress is shit for you, because, you know, there's classes and what not, such unecessary complexities eh? Let's not even mention Tribes, gosh, vehicles, and jetpacks! Who WANTS those things, right? You're just being an elitist, and an absurd one at that... It didn't take 6 rockets to the face to kill someone in UT2004 either... And I found the adrenaline stuff stupid. But I loved the game overall.
UT3 qualifies to pretty much all your demands but you clearly don't think it's so good since you don't include it in your list, so clearly you don't present what you want out of a game that well... And yet you pretend what you state here is the best thing ever as anything else apparently isn't, uh, real multi player. Such shitty elitist attitude. Grow up. The games you want to play? They're still there. Feel free to play them. There's no reason to act all superior because you play those and others don't, or others play those AND different things on top... The UT2004 community sure was happy to play that game, and yet also something like Red Orchestra on top... Why not you? Well, scratch that. You don't have to like other things. But don't pretend the things you do like are somehow objectively better. That's bullshit, because games most of the time cannot be judged objectively, only subjectively, as people like different things.
And uh, UT2004 had 100 maps at launch? No. Just no. And it never reached 100 official maps. The bonus packs didn't add THAT many new maps. Perhaps you confuse the community maps on top of the official stuff, but I doubt even the prominent well known packs bring the number up to 100. Besides, people had their favorites in those games too. Face sure was an often picked CTF map... But you blame CS for people liking Dust? Whatever.
Anyway, RO, CS, COD4, Tribes, TF, Fallen Empire: Legions, BF, Alien Swarm (hey, co-op counts as multi player) are just as real as the games you like. Have fun with your chosen past time anyway. I just don't see why you feel the need to step on others' choices making threads like this. Maybe you should look into that.

Jeez guys.
I love Halo 3 and Killzone 2, but...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is the absolute greatest multiplayer shooter ever conceived. Bombing Run is the greatest game mode I have ever played. I am not kidding.
In fact...Yes, once I get back to PC gaming with my new Notebook, I will buy the UT ANthology and spend as much time as possible reliving the amazing awesomeness of Bombing Run, whilst you guys all argue over the latest "update" to TF2.
I played UT99 like crazy for about 3 years+. We were one of the best CTF/TDM clans in Germany. I still think UT99 is one of the most fun shooters ever made (also in the beginning there were no timers and shit, voice chat was still coming and new). I very much like the movement possibilities (dodging) which adds a tactical dimension to map traversal and weapon usage. And also the way they build the weapons, there were A LOT of opportunities. I don't know why 'progamers' don't cry for something more complex in case of weaponry and movement these days. Or did I miss something?

Just because a game has a huge amount of maps doesn't make it great, it's just an added benefit. I think all of TF2 maps are great and very memorable because they're all unique in some way. I could name all the official TF2 maps off the top of my head but I doubt you could name all 100 of those maps without having to check.

And no, the UT franchise isn't the only one with tons of maps and mods. Killing Floor proves what exactly? Just because it now has gone retail? Personally, I never found KF that good, so you should have said Red Orchestra, or Alien Swarm or another great mod. But even so, the bulk of the community never played those. It was pathetic. All that kept the mod teams going was the MSU contest and their tiny fanbases. It was sad to see their hard work go unsupported with not even a fraction of the player base of vanilla UT2004. Hell, why do you even like mods? Most don't adhere to your "rules" of what makes real multi player but you list them as good, ha? I can't imagine you playing something like Red Orchestra given your beliefs about what makes "real multiplayer" but whatever works for your argument.
So, yeah, did you somehow miss the Half-Life phenomenon to think UT2004 only had mods? At least people played those. Counter-Strike. Day of Defeat. They played them enough to warrant retail releases, yet they always remained free for those who had Half-Life. Talk about great support from Valve yeah? While in the case of the UT mods that went retail, it was the hard work of the mod teams that made them retail, and the mod versions were left to die unsupported as they had no benefit to keep them. Epic didn't see it fit to support them in the same way Valve did, hiring the developers and both updating the mods for people with their games, and offering the mods at retail. And on top of that, many other wonderful projects that didn't go retail but were still played a lot. Natural Selection. The Specialists. Pirates, Vikings & Knights. Buzzybots. Holy Wars. And too many others to remember. Just saying.
Again, your wants and needs of a multi player game don't only apply to UT and UT2004, and your dislikes are pretty much ridiculous as they only apply to a fraction of the shooters that are out there yet you pretend that's how everything except UT and UT2004 is... Meh.
UT99 brings a nostalgic feeling whenever I think about it. A brilliant game I loved and played to death for a good few years. But times change and new games use new mechanics and features. Do I like all the new improvements to the genre? No, not all of them. But then again I can still respect some games will use different mechanics to different effect and not every game can stick to the oldschool styles even if I wish they did.
Times change, and change is inevitable!
Why we're debating this? Well this is simple. You made a proposition about a totally of games and since subjective experiences are contradictory, people feel urged to share their opinion.
We all have our favourite games, genres and mechanisms - typically because it's what we grew up with, the games we first played and the games we enjoyed the most. The great thing with our involvement in such a diverse interactive medium is that if we want the same experiences, we can go back and play these games.

And how would you come to realise that? Did I describe the game wrong or something? All I said about that was that his descriptions are inadequate. I'm aware of the differences between UT2004 and UT3, but his vague "this rules, this sux" descriptions don't even show he has played UT2004 all that much, as he doesn't distinguish the things that do make it different to other similar shooters, like UT3. Neither the things he likes are so rare anymore, nor are the things he dislikes common to every other shooter since UT2k4 to act as he hates everything else for those few reasons. That was my point. Inadequate vague descriptions that lump together things that are not the same.
And, um, butthurt? Yet you apparently agree with this guy? I thought one of his points was xbl 12 year olds spewing bs. Now you act like them?

Or, you know, we have a difference of opinion, and I didn't find 2000 good maps. Or even 500. What, one's allowed to claim that everything except 2 games is not real multi player but one saying that out of 2000 maps only about 100 were probably good is the most irrational person you've met? Mind blown. Rofl. You're a funny guy. Goodnight, I hope you'll have more funnies for me when I check back.
And Kaos, this isn't the IRC. You made a forum thread. If you want a discussion here, post everything you want to say. My point stands, your descriptions of what's good and bad are inadequate and lump dissimilar things together and even contradict your claims. Write what you REALLY want to say as you claim to have done on IRC, then maybe it can be discussed decently.

Recovering health is actually a good mechanic in theory(when discussing multiplayer). If the game is fast paced, then 5 seconds is plenty of time for somebody to sneak up on you.
And it means that there's a fair chance if you nearly die and break engagement. It allows you to get back into fighting form without medkit hunting(which is really just a matter of memorisation, not skill).
It's a crying shame that it's only been applied recently, and that pretty much all recent FPS are, compared to UT and Quake, the equivalent of going from a knife-fight to a naval battle.
