Waking up
MMOs suck up a large amount of time, but so do games like Call of Duty, or The Sims. Sometimes, a game can suck up too much of your life, and you need to break away. This can be hard, especially when that game you love so much is really fun. When you do finally disconnect yourself from a game, its like waking up to a whole new world, one where, you don't have to care about beating the next level, or grinding fishing till you reach level 90. It can be a great moment.
Have any of you ever had a moment where you went...... "Whoa, what have i been doing......" ? Where you "woke up" and moved on from a game you just couldnt shake?
For me, it was an MMO *cough* Runescape *cough*, i had been playing for about a year or so, had payed to be a member, and reached level 75 ( For those of you who dont know, thats a little more than half way. I had been playing with a friend, who gave up on it a few months earlier. I realized i had spent so much time clicking the use net with fishing spot button, id been missing out on life. Also the shame of runescape will never go away, but thats another story. It felt awesome to not care about that stupid game anymore.
Actually it happened to me yesterday when I was playing Forza 3 for the first time. Got so engrossed by the time I knew I should take a break, I completely forgot about everything else I wanted or had to do. For me it wasn't like waking up in a new world, more like waking up when you're sleep deprived and a loud noisy neighbor woke you and you don't know what you're doing.
I got engrossed in MMOs long ago, EQ1 and Star Wars Galaxies, but my leaving the game felt pretty natural. Feelings of annoyance at the game or the game community swelled to the point where I played less and less and then not at all.
Yeah, I too used to play Runescape. Was the only game (never got into WoW... got bored at about level 30) I ever really got addicted to. 75 isn't really halfway... it's not really even 1/4 of the way. I have/had a level 116 or so (Just Jay) and a level 80 (gre4t pur3)... man I spent way too much time with that game. Luckily I have absolutely zero interest in that game anymore.
If you enjoyed playing it then it's not a waste. I'm not sure who I'm trying to convince with that statement but I had a similar feeling when I saw my Fallout 3 save file the other day.
" Runescape. wasted a year of my life on that bullshit "Wow, atleast pick a good game ;P
Happened to me with WoW, realized that all I did was go to school, come home and play WoW until 1-2 a.m., every day. I unsubscribed that instant, then sunk into a depression.
I've resubscribed to WoW 3 times since then, and each time I quit is because I find some other way to spend my time (the most recent time being college starting up).
it was kind of how i felt when i played WoW. me and my friend use to play in high school. i would play until like 11, go to school, come home play some more until 11. sometimes i would have to work after school. i would be like aww man i have to go to work. go there and just think about wow. i got bored of it so i stopped playing it.
idk how people can play runescape. i played it for like an hour. once i got off of newb island i stopped playing the game. i do have to say that it's pretty good graphics for the game just being web browser game.
Like you could "waste time" when you're 10. All you're doing is bullshit anyway.
I started playing WoW at age 19 and literally wasted 2 years on that fucking crack, basically ruining my life and future in the process. I'm back on track now, but jesus christ it's depressing to think about.
Let me define Runescape for you
MMO (already potent)
Browser-Based
Free
It's gives you pleasure and is available where ever there is internet access. It's basically porn except it's not socially disliked.
It's a easily-accesible game so, if your a kid who has parents that won't let you play many games, then Runescape has big appeal to you. Also kids that have these strict overly-guiding parents are not usually the "popular" kids in their school, so where is a great place to have social interactions (although usually crude or primitive) and feel like your part of a community? An MMO.
Now these are just conclusions I got from by knowing friends who have played the game for 4+ years, so you might wildly disagree. Although I will say, if you're going to argue that you played Runescape for a year or two and your not like the description above, then I'm going to assume that you were just following a trend when you were younger.

my god...but you've stopped. ....right ? "
I wasted 3. "

It was a trend i bet.
that has happened to me, it isn't usual, but when I was a child I spent too much time playing the stupid Sims 2 (the worst part is that I bought various expansions). But right now, I never get too addicted to a game. I don't like that much MMO games and I usually beat a game in 2 days so... (Borderlands being an exception, but I'm not addicted to it).
I start to feel my future drifting further away whenever I play over 5 hours with no breaks. But I used to sacrifice my sleep and play non-stop whenever I could and I fucked up my grades and attendance in school because of it.It's always been console games for me,no MMOs or anything.
I played WoW many many hours a day, nearly every day for two years. Then one day I signed off and never returned. I had no plans at the time to quit, but I felt I needed a break. A few days went by, those turned into a couple of weeks and then more than a month. I had no urge to return to the game. In fact, I took that time to play some other titles I had long neglected like Mass Effect and Dragon Quest 5. And then I realized what I had been missing all that long time in Azeroth. Don't get me wrong. I don't regret my experience in WoW, but I so love the freedom to be able to enjoy all that the rest of the gaming world has to offer today. Catching up with all the noteworthy titles released over the course of my playtime in Warcraft has been great fun. "Waking up" kind of feels walking out onto a field of grass as Polyphonic Spree's Light & Day blares in the background.

Sims games are all high risk games because they have no real point, you just make stuff, forever. Sim City is pretty addicting if you know what your doing because you never win, you just grow your city.
" World of FRIGGIN' Warcraft. Spent about a year of my life on that bullshit game. Wasted sooo much time it gets me angry. "I cast flare!
Wow... I've never even had that experience. I thought at some point I might have been addicted to games, but not to the point where I stop and look at the world and think "Whoaa" .
I guess the occasional mammoth game sesh doesn't really count. I thought I would get addicted to borderlands, but after two twelve hour sessions in a row, the novelty wore off. Plus it didn't even suck any of my time from those days because I just replaced sleep with it.
I think the closest thing I had to that feeling was when I stopped smoking weed, but then I realized nothing was that different, once again, because I would smoke before bed. So that didn'T matter at all. WAsn't even taking any of my time up.
I CAN'T GET ADDICTED >___<
Wait, I'm complaining??!!!?!!
TIME TO TAKE UP CRACK AND WoW!
The primary reason people quit MMOs is because they suck at them. Just look at this thread. Half of you didn't hit level cap. You probably would not have been valuable members of your guilds or raids or whatever. The thing about MMOs is they require a certain level of intellect--I would NOT say dedication because I can hit level cap in WoW without the use of mods or China in one day; therefore making it a casual game.
If you can't succeed in a simple game then you might as well not bother getting a job anywhere. I work in IT and make a lot more money than most of you (no offense). Playing MMOs effectively is second nature to me.
