What's going to determine who won the console race this gen?
Well Last Time The PS2 was destroying the competion in sales wise and had the games to back it up for all demographic whether it was GTA, MGS, Gran Turismo, Eye Toy, Buzz or resident evil.
This Generation I say we will decide a winner on what each console contrubites to us the gamer.
PS3 -Blue Ray, PSN, Internet, Home, MGS4 and high Quality games
360 - Xbox Live,MarketPlace, High Quality Games
Wii -New Audiance, Motion Senising, Shovelware
who is left standing with the biggest bag of cash. Or left standing period i guess. My self though i look at it as who gave me the most hours of pure fun. And so far PC has won every time since i got one back in 1998.
Honestly, i think it's all coming down to your own opinion this time. They're all different enough to not be compared by sales or the like. they all sort of appeal to different audiences. I think it's less of a war and more of a diplomatic cease fire for now. PS2 was very outrightly dominant last generation. This time the winner is chosen by whatever you like the most yourself.
"Last time it was the sheer number of games and owners of the PS2."Only because the Dreamcast was dead and the Xbox had very little going for it at all. It was just assumed to be the PS2 by default. There was no, and nor will there ever be any 'official' winner to a generation of consoles.
The winner will be whichever one you like the most at the end of it. Or, if you're at all logical, whichever one made the biggest percentage of gross profit. So it's looking like the Wii.
I hate system wars... it's just a showcase of people insecurities and why they need to prove to themselves more than anyone else as to why their system is the best because they don't want to think they spent money on it unless it's the ABSOLUTE best console there is for that generation.
- Wii: Has sold the most amount of consoles but it's game library is starting to slag. It's main attribute was the wii mote, but it doesn't fulfill the attributes of a gaming system for gamers. It's really good though because it's extended itself to a broader audience beyond gamers so it'll sell well regardless.
- Xbox 360: Great game library, good features, it's only problem is alot of the consoles sold have hardware issues (RROD, overheating, etc.) Also the games are only dvd format so the 360's full potential hasn't been tapped yet. My guess is in a few years they're gonna release a new type of 360 with a bigger harddrive, all the hardware problems solved, and probably just have you install very large games to the hdd so you won't have to play 6 cd's if they choose to make very high quality games (one of the reasons MGS4 can't be ported to 360 is because it would take 5-6 discs).
- PS3: Had a very VERY rough start. The games which came out for it during launch left much to be desired. Along with the high price, this acted as a huge deterent for those wanting to buy a PS3. However, the games have gotten much much better and it's library is almost on par with Xbox 360's. Also the system is the most powerful of the 3 in every aspect of hardware. It's capable of ALOT and if that potentials tapped it can compete against the other 2 systems without any problems.
" I hate system wars... it's just a showcase of people insecurities and why they need to prove to themselves more than anyone else as to why their system is the best because they don't want to think they spent money on it unless it's the ABSOLUTE best console there is for that generation. "Absolutely right about insecurities. The console I owned last gen - all the way from the beginning, came last and I could care less. 100 games of fun meant everything. I also bought the other 2 later and got a lot of fun out of the winner and not a lot of fun from the second placed system. People's opinions on consoles have zero effect on my choices.
You think terms like hardcore or casual or dumb?
No, this is dumb. Why would you bump this crap?
I can see you caring if you work at Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony, or have tons of stock in one of those.
The entire discussion is absolutely meaningless, there was never a meaning to 'winning' the 'console race' and there never will be.
Nintendo have already one this one, and I imagine it'll be Microsoft in second place and Sony in third, unless something drastic happens between now and 2012.
" Welcome to Club Sensitive :-)LOL...how funny. He is right you know. ps3 and 360 fanboys won't even admit it but deep down they know that Nintendo won this time around. It does not matter if the games for it are mostly crap, it is selling well and it will keep selling well. Funny how Microsoft's goal was to beat Sony and out comes Nintendo "guns blazing". Nintendo tapped into a whole different market and are selling like hot cakes. Sony's "motion camera" and Microsoft's "natal" are their way of saying that they want some of that casual and non gamers market pie. As oldschool said, shhhhhhhhhhhh...saying that Nintendo won is taboo here. The winner is determined by the personal bias of the individual. Everyone knows it is the Wii, but shhhhhh, if you say that around here, you get flamed.I say the Sega Mega Drive will win - great new hardware and a great established library."
well while i think that all of them are an important factor, sales is what ultimately makes the final result, especially to the companies that made the consoles
I think we've seen something in this generation that we haven't seen on this scale before, and that is the attach rate of games for the consoles. Yes, the Wii has more sales, but the Xbox 360 has almost double the attach rate, and that means a lot to publishers. Add into it that the 360 has some of the most acclaimed games of this generation, probably the best online and download service, and has brought in franchises that were formally exclusives, and I think the 360 is much closer to the Wii than people may think by just looking at the sales figures. Also the Wii is undoubtedly starting to lose momentum, and the recent dent in the Japanese game market isn't going to help their cause, especially as the 360 begins it's very slow climb towards popularity in Japan. The PS3 could make an epic comeback by the end of the cycle, but isn't there yet.
I suppose it depends if Project Natal or the Sony Motion Control really does take off in the mainstream, which won't help attach rates but will help overall console sales. As for games which could tip the balance, Rockstar's Agent could potentially be a big hit for the PS3, and God of War 3 is almost certain to lead to better sales at the start of next year. The 360 also has two Halo games on the way, although you have to think that most people who would be stoked about a Halo game already bought an 360 to play Halo 3. However third party games are definitely helping Microsoft more than the other consoles. The Wii doesn't have much in the way of future console sellers, either first or third party; as with Halo, Super Mario Galaxy 2 probably won't grow sales.
But that's just the business side. The truth is we all win in the end, because there have been some amazing games in this generation, with more to come.
" @oldschool said:Just so you know Emillo, I wasn't disagreeing with you, but rather, I was being flippant. I have been flamed for mentioning that Nintendo won this generation and it was more than just sales of consoles alone - add how they changed the market and Sony & Microsoft saw that and wanted a piece of it. Hence the flippancy." @Emilio said:The "console war" is won by how many consoles are sold and put into people's hands not by how many of your favorite games are on it. "" It has always been console sales. "Not if your system of choice isn't winning. Then the rules change. "
I'm pretty sure Michael Pachter will determine who won the console war...in fact, I think he's already announced the winner so everyone can all go home now.
" No one cares. Unless you're a stupid fanboy. "And thats the truth, this thread has officially ended.
