As the industry is starting to push a new gimmick down our throats and the soon to be released 3DS I was wondering how many gamers out there have bothered to purchase 3D tech,
Has anyone invested in Nivida 3D equipment and a screen
and have any console gamers purchased a 3D TV when and If it comes along
can anyone really justify spending that much money on either solution, for the PC your looking around £400 all together and for consoles well I dont see any value in £2000+ for a 3D LCD Tv
Who has invested in 3D gaming??
I paid $10 (shipping included) fot 10 pairs of Nvidia 3D Vision Discover Glasses. Yeah, Nvidia branded anaglyph for less ghosting. Turns out to be unplayable without nausea because Nvidia still doesn't sync the eyes in anaglyph mode. One eye sees things a half a frame later than the other eye and it makes focusing on things in the distance painful to the brain.
Minecraft's OpenGL anaglyph mode works perfectly though. Too bad there are no stereo separation or convergence controls in that game.
PS: It will be as much of a fad as stereo audio was. Even John Lennon thought that wouldn't last, so your skepticism is understandable. But only barely.
" I don't care about the 3D gaming. I hope this fad dies out. I really do not want to have purchase a 3D TV. "That's the ting, you're never gonna HAVE to purchase a 3D TV.
Games aren't conna be 3D only, at least not from Sonys side of the field and from what Nintendo have said, neither will their games.
I have a feeling the current 3D tech is nowhere near what it will be in a few years. I would probably be best to hold off for as long as possible. I do really want the 3DS though. 3DS seems like the safest 3D option.
Sadly? Why is it a bad thing? I notice you like headphones. Being able to hear in stereo sure is neat, isn't it? And it doesn't even bother you to wear something on your head to experience this?" @Aaron_G: Sadly I dont see it dying out anytime soon, 3D cinema and the Nintendo 3DS they are going to be pusing this for sometime now, if they invest a lot of money they are going to try desperately to recoup any loses "
What benefit is pushing 3D tech for games, most films in 3D are rubbish, Toy Story being the best example
But headphones and stereos had the same high price barrier of entry when they were first released to the market. You don't think the price of the tech will come down?
And look at how pathetic stereo music was back in the 60s compared to now. It's only gonna get better. That's how technology works.
The interactive nature of games will be what drives stereoscopic entertainment. Not movies or other passive media... well except maybe porn.
Haven't invested. Once it becomes mainstream, then I'll hate myself for not investing in it; just like when gaming went HD!
Still don't own an HDTV. :/

wee?
I have no reason to invest in 3D gaming. It fucks up your eyes in the long run, plus not all gaming companies are going to hop on that bandwagon.
I will not spend a dime on 3D gaming until there is a universally accepted approach to it that doesn't include me wearing glasses (which doesn't seem that far off).

Judging by your avatar it's probably because you only have one functioning eye." @JJWeatherman said:

I only bought my first HD TV a few months ago and Im certainly not buying another one any time soon. In a couple of years when the price of 3D TV's goes down and there is more content then perhaps I will buy one.
As long as it requires me to buy another monitor or TV, count me out. It's not appealing enough to me to justify this investment.
My left eye is slightly more dominant, but as far as I know I can still see 3D." Stereoscopic 3D doesn't work for me - 1 eye slightly more dominant. Still following whats happening on the 3DS front though. "
I watched my fav team last year Man United play against Man City in 3D, now I didnt really notice the 3D cause I was so focused on the match but I remember thinking at the time that it was awesome but when I watched another game the following week I just though the 3D was crap

I think you can adjust that on your home PC unlike the cinema .
I have a 3D capable GPU, but that's about it. I will invest in 3D gaming when the 3DS comes out. If I can't agree with the 3D on a cheapish console where I can turn it off I'm not going to go for a much larger investment on a bigger platform.
" @JJWeatherman said:All I know is that I saw Avatar in 3D and had no problems. Maybe it would have been a better experience if my eyes were more equal, but sadly I'll never know." @Adamsons said:I think you can adjust that on your home PC unlike the cinema . I'm only really excited about the 3DS. As people have said, all other tech is far too pricey. Plus I wear glasses so....
What I love the most is that Nintendo has somehow sidestepped the whole 3D backlash. Its weird seeing people say 'Gaw, I hate 3D gaming. Definitely getting the 3DS though'
I will get a 3DS and that will be the only 3D anything I get ever.

Trust me, it's far off. Tested did a really good piece on this that I can't seem to be able to find. But basically the gist is that at typical TV screen size it's damn-near impossible currently unless you're angled in respect to the television set perfectly. Which, goes without saying, is untenable.
My video cards support that nvidia 3D technology, but I think all of there cards past a certain point. I have no interest in ever using it and even if I did I doubt I could because I'm nearly blind in my right eye and all 3d working is based on two working eyes to trick your brain.
To early to tell. It might have a few uses. But over all I think it's range for applications is limited. I'm the type of movie watcher that still enjoys concave screens.
From a movie buff stand point, I'm very much against it. Movies made for 3d viewing are ok, but if some directors try and use it in serious films. A massive amount of gaudy, badly set up scenes designed around making something jump out at you, will end up being made.
Case and point, Beowulf. I don't want more of that trash. That story could have been great. I am also extremely worried about The Hobbit movies being turned into more Avatar. PJ has a lot to live up to and his last two movies were him, just showing off.
But we can't really fight the tide here. Gimmicky shit like this, is what Hollywood is all about.
One day I would like to own a 3d tv but I won't pay as much as I paid for my HD tv. Also I am definitely waiting for them to get rid of the glasses, it seems like with the DS it might be possible so I don't see any reason for anyone to rush.
" @Aaron_G said:But it is the concept that games will be centered around this idea of 3D gaming. It is the same thing with HD. I had some 3D shutter glasses with my GeForce 4 TI4400 back in the early 00's, and they did pretty much what they're pushing now. The only difference now is LCD monitors, which because of their refresh method (not scan-line) need to be 120+ Hz to pull off the effect. On the old CRT monitors we went with 60FPS so 30 for each eye.
Still, it sucked. I tried Quake II and Unreal Tournament in 3D and wasn't impressed. The only semi-impressive game in 3D was IL2: Sturmovik, but it still sucked. Yeah, it looks 3D, but it just doesn't look right. Since each eye spends half the time shuttered closed, everything starts to look washed-out and...spectral I guess, after just 5-10 minutes. Then the headaches ensue.
Maybe if they could pull off polarized lenses instead of shutter lenses things would look decent, but that's not going to happen with current monitor tech.

When i went to see Avatar i wore my contacts under the 3D glasses and i could feel my eyes trying to adjust but it just wasn't working.
