I think it should be... Just had a topic locked for not being related to games
Can off topic be about anything?
"Yeah... your topic should have been locked, but MB provided a pretty retarded reason for it."Maybe you should reread the Forum FAQ.
It's been the rule since day one that we do not allow discussions about USING drugs - but topics about characters' drug use in specific games or the inclusion of drugs in games as an object or theme are OK. I would have thought that someone that has been around since the beginning and has nearly 7,000 posts would know that.
"Jayge said:It wasn't a discussion about using drugs, it was a poll based on preference. That said, if you've been enforcing that rule the entire time, then you've only been enforcing half of it, because plenty of people discussing their personal "piracy" histories and other things of that nature have been left alone and ignored. It also provides no explenation for why my post in that thread was randomly deleted, since it was discussing alcohol, which is by no means illegal."Yeah... your topic should have been locked, but MB provided a pretty retarded reason for it."Maybe you should reread the Forum FAQ.It's been the rule since day one that we do not allow discussions about USING drugs - but topics about characters' drug use in specific games or the inclusion of drugs in games as an object or theme are OK. Same thing, the thread was about illegal drugs and had nothing to do with games so it was closed. Threads that talk about piracy are also fine as long as they don't detail how to crack games or give links on where to download pirated games or software.
A good example is that while a thread discussing the fact that there are drugs in Saints Row 2 is fine, but a thread about how you just smoked a fat blunt would not be OK. Do you understand now?

Yet people discuss partaking in piracy themselves all the time, which is what I was referring to. Not discussing piracy, discussing engaging in piracy. Why should those be left alone if threads about "illegal drugs" that don't talk about how to use them or give tips on how to create them or buy them are locked? There is no difference.
Same thing, the thread was about illegal drugs and had nothing to do with games so it was closedThat made me stop reading for a second. I thought off-topic was supposed to be stuff unrelated to games?

Perhaps if it was related to games, it could be moved to General Discussion?"I agree with that.
I don't know. I think there will most likely always be questions as to what's allowed and what's not, despite there being a Forum Guide.

"For the purposes of this site, there is a distinct difference. We're not going to just ban all discussion about piracy outright, because it is a part of this industry and a lot of good discussions can be had about it and how it affects developers and consumers alike. That is a lot different from someone posting a link to a torrent site where you can download a cracked copy of Dawn of War II, wouldn't you say?
If you feel that certain discussions are way outside of the scope of what is allowed on Giant Bomb, then send a PM to a moderator and one of us will review the thread or post in question.

As jayge said, what about alcohol? it's totally legal, and his post about alcohol was deleted."
His post slipped in after my "This thread is getting locked" reply while I was locking the topic. Those types of late posts are always deleted regardless of content. It's a limitation (or bug) related to the locking system - sometimes people can get replies in after a thread is already locked if they time it right.
"we do not allow discussions about USING drugs"What about a discussion on whether or not the government should be able to keep people from smoking weed while at the same time making millions from the taxes on alcohol and cigarettes?

"MB said:Sounds fine to me...but again, that's not a "Tell me about the last time you shot up horse" thread is it? Again...common sense prevails. These sorts of things will be handled on a case by case basis. As far as your other point, that was already addressed and if you read the entire thread you would find your answer."we do not allow discussions about USING drugs"What about a discussion on whether or not the government should be able to keep people from smoking weed while at the same time making millions from the taxes on alcohol and cigarettes?
