This Tuesday California citizens will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition 19, which will legalize, regulate, and tax Cannbis for personal use for adults 21 and over. You can view the specifics of the law here: http://www.ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/California_Proposition_19,_the_Marijuana_Legalization_Initiative_%282010%29

Personally even as a Massachusetts resident I fully support the proposition, and it’s long over due. Getting Marijuana legalized has been an incredibly tough battle thus far, and to finally see at least one state end this era of ignorance would be a landmark victory in the campaign to change Marijuana laws. I realize the bill isn’t perfect, but consider the fact that if Proposition 19 does not pass this Tuesday, chances are we won’t have another shot at legalization for at least another decade or two. People make the case that it’s already decriminalized in some states (my own included) but I say that is not enough. I want to be able to procure Cannabis in a relaxed, risk free environment where I won’t get fucked over by some douchebag teenager. What do you guys think?

No, I don't support it. I'm not particularly against it, but I'm not all for it either. It's hard to tell what kind of effect this would have.

I'm Canadian and I support this proposition. Waiting to find out the results ...
Legalization in California could start a domino effect across North America. Here's to hoping.

This.

If it goes through then fine. Pot heads will finally shut the hell up. If it doesn't go through, then that's also fine and hopefully pot heads will find something constructive to do like....well, anything else.

I have no problem with weed itself. I only have a problem with people who smoke too much and won't shut up about it. Also it puts money in california's pocket, what is bad about that?

Yes, I support it.  I don't smoke weed myself and think it's stupid, but as long as alcohol and smoking is legal, so should marijuana.

@ChristOnIce: True, at the federal level, MJ would still be illegal.  But if this passes, this would cause a showdown in the courts between california and other states and the federal government to see if regulation of drugs does indeed fall under federal jurisdiction.  A good idea of why federal laws might be declared unconstitutional is that alcohol laws are made by states or the fact that there is no national driver's license or ID or how Nevada and its counties can regulate prostitution...see the 10th amendment of the constitution.  It is also why medicinal marijuana is legal in California even federally.
 You're federally fucked now.

Vote yes, vote no, it doesn't matter. A state cannot make a law that violates federal law. We kinda fought an entire Civil War based on that premise...

Anyone in Cali that thinks this can pass is an idiot.

The feds say weed is 100% illegal, States can't make up laws that counter that.

It defeats the entire purpose of the feds then.

I would vote no, because...
@FancySoapsMan said:

" ...potheads are annoying. "
And personally I can't stand the smell of it.

Then again, if it was strictly for personal use at the home, I don't really see a problem with it. I don't know... I'm against things that alter one's state of mind, but I know people get pleasure/enjoyment out of it, and I don't feel like I'm in a position to say they can't have that enjoyment.
They say there will be a system put in place to prevent driving while under the influence, but I doubt it would be successful.

Ugh, I'm all wishy-washy on this subject. Saying no it shouldn't be allowed makes me feel like a hypocrite because I'm basing that on stereotypical potheads. It's the same way a person not familiar with the content would judge someone who is into videogames/anime.

I think I'll just throw my hands up off this subject, and hope Texas doesn't have to deal with such a prop anytime soon. My writing teacher is right, I'm fucking terrible at making an argument.

I don't smoke pot, but I've never agreed with government regulation of acts that affect only the individual (you can regulate derived acts, such as driving while under the influence, but I don't believe in limiting personal liberties because of possible resulting actions); as such, I'm strongly in favor of prop. 19.

Or, as some of my more discerning friends put it: potthevote.

I'm from the UK so I fully admit to not quite understanding how American law is enforced but if Federal Law overrides State Law then what is the point of trying to legalise marijuana at the State Law level if it'll still be considered illegal by Federal Law?

Just because you don't smoke doesn't make that justification for voting against it. If we used that kind of thinking then anything you didn't do should be illegal. How about... I don't smoke but I respect the rights of others to do what they want to their body as long as it doesn't negatively affect me. That sounds more like responsible and adult thinking.

I'm all for it. It's going to happen eventually and from my personal experience people who smoke pot are far less annoying and dangerous than someone drunk out of their mind. From a financial point of view it will allow the government of California to stop spending millions housing and prosecuting people caught with small amounts of marijuana (obviously illegal dealers need to be prosecuted) and it will provide a new source of tax income. So, go forth and vote Cali. At least you have something worth voting on as opposed to the disgusting mud slinging going on here in WV over Robert C. Byrd's senate seat.
