@Aegon:

I kind of agree to an extent, because, from a voice perspective, he really is the modern Michael Jackson. Dude sounds just like him in D.D, shit is insane. I don't really mind all of the drug and sex references, because in most of those songs you still can kind of relate. From what I've heard of The Birds Part 1 Interlude (I think originally titled The Warning), I can't wait for the bonus tracks he's putting on the album.

Wondering if he'll ever release (officially) The Noise EP, was a bit shocked it won't be included in Trilogy. Some of those songs are real good. His first two music videos on VEVO have been kind of stale, to say the least. Then again, I don't listen to music for the music videos, so I really couldn't care less.

Among a lot of great music... I think the Fez OST is the best album released this year. Truly amazing music that covers a wide range of moods and tones. Never have heard anything like it. (I love that a video game soundtrack is honestly my album of the year right now)

Runner up is probably Death Grips "The Money Store"

He does have a high tenor like MJ and I thought he sounded like him too when I heard DD, but when I actually compared the voices they're really different. It's just that the weeknd implements some Mike-isms when singing DD, so it makes it sound more familiar. Either way, he has a great voice and I'd like to hear him sing something different.

Vital by Anberlin is probably my favorite thing at the moment.

Also Battle Born by The Killers. They're a rather guilty pleasure of mine.

This times a million.  I listened to the album in a clothing store and I wouldve left because I wanted to wait until I actually had the CD in my hands but goddamn, the music just drew me back in.

Plain and simple, these are the four best albums released this year for me:

  • The Faceless - Autotheism
  • Periphery - II: This Time It's Personal
  • The Haarp Machine - Disclosure
  • Coheed and Cambria - The Afterman: Ascension

I really wish I could include Gojira's L'Enfant Sauvage on that. I think it's a fantastic album, but it was more of the same. These three albums are goddamn magnificent and masterful strokes of work.

There were other albums I thoroughly enjoyed: Goatwhore, Van Halen, Fear Factory, and even some stuff in the more popular mainstream. However, I just didn't feel like any of those albums were actually a band moving forward, but rather a band being confined to their particular brand. The Faceless and Periphery were two bands that grew the fuck up and turned in fantastic personal albums that happened to be technical as shit and take them out of their comfort zones a couple of times. I would go so far as to say that Periphery's second album is to Periphery what Fortress was to Protest The Hero. As for The Haarp Machine, it was easily one of THE most anticipated metal debut albums I've seen in a long time, an album that was bringing metal communities together rather than separating them. The album did not disappoint one bit, and the fact that they kept it from leaking literally until an hour and a half before its release has to be some kind of goddamn record! NO ONE HAD THAT FUCKING ALBUM!

Coheed and Cambria - The Afterman: Ascension just released, and while it's only part one of a double album and clocks in at a short 39 minutes, not a moment is wasted. Hoping Descension, dropping in February, is as strong or even stronger. Very reminiscent of In Keeping Secrets... and Good Apollo I, which is great.

MOTHERFUCKER! I FORGOT ABOUT THIS COMING OUT! Well, shit. I may have to add a fourth to my list if this turns out as good as I expect it to be.

*EDIT* Yeah. This thing is fucking excellent. It's on my goddamn list.

@InfiniteSpark: Zammuto! Awesome pick! Saw those guys when I went to see Explosions in the Sky in spring. That album is sick! It's been on continuous rotation since I got it.

Also for me, The Mars Volta - Noctourniquet

Its not their old stuff, but I still loved it.

@PollySMPS: I'm curious if Sentry the Defiant is going to make it on Descension. The acoustic thing for it that Claudio released was goddamn excellent, easily one of the best songs I've ever heard from him. I was kind of saddened to see that it didn't end up on Ascension.

Nonetheless, as someone heavily invested in The Amory Wars, I know that I will have to get the limited edition with the book. Did the same for Black Rainbow and have all the comics.

You got to see Zammuto AND Explosions in the Sky?!? Man, I would've love to be at that show!

  • Caspian - Waking Season
  • Aesop Rock - Skelethon
  • Spiritualized - Sweet Heart, Sweet Light
  • Death Grips - The Money Store
  • THEESatisfaction - Awe Natuale
  • The Men - Open Your Heart

I don't buy, nor do i listen to full albums anymore. But from what I've heard from the "Bones" album by Young Guns, i'd say that's my pick then.

1. Tame Impala - Lonerism

2. Ladyhawke - Anxiety

I might have to check out Grimes - Visions next as I really enjoy the 2 songs I have heard from it so far (Genesis and Oblivion) and it seems to have a few fans on here

Right now, I've got a top 5 of Infected Mushroom's Army of Mushrooms, Nhato's Etude, The M Machine's Metropolis Pt. 1, Parov Stelar's The Princess and Devin Townsend Project's Epicloud.

I keep returning to Not Your Kind of People by Garbage and Synthetica by Metric. Both of those albums are amazingly great.

I had hoped that Tenacious D's Rize of the Fenix would be on that list, but the final album was kinda disappointing. Fantastic single though.

Dragonforce - The Power Within

Pretty much by default. The only other two 2012 albums I can remember listening to are Some Nights by Fun and Somethin' 'bout Kreay...

Oh yeah, and Green Day's Uno. It's almost stunning how bad that album is.

I find that sentiment a little ironic when you post a song that could be construed as boring, that's some monk shit right there, though.
