1. Using the + / - system, you can hide the OP, rendering topics with no OP. This means future people coming into the topic might not even read the first post, and since glitches screwed up revealing the post, we just wind up with giant hate-ball topics. I've already seen this - GiantBomb trusted people to have some common sense - instead they use the system to censor things they don't agree with.
.

2. The + / - system allows any trolling group to raid the forums and hide intelligent posts. Fifty /b/tards could easily hide every post on the forum that wasn't theirs. Again, trusting the internet to itself is foolish - look at the comments on any YouTube video - is that what we want here?
.

3. Moderation. Morons are so excited, talking about how they're "free" and there's no "censorship" and it's not a "kiddy pool". Yeah, but at the same time, ANYONE can come in, hijack the boards, spam, copypasta, rick-roll, and spread cancer all over the place. You will spend most of your time here wading knee deep in **** because hate and spam is the lowest common denominator of the internet. We need to reach a compromise between power-hungry "screw the user" moderation, and "anything goes - GiantBomb forums are my personal blog, twitter, and myspace all rolled into one!".  We don't need twitter ****ers posting every two minutes to ask the same dumb questions over-and-over again.

Does anyone here really give a crap what games anyone else here hasn't beaten? Or who their favorite Nintendo character is? You're just going to post your own, go "post count +1" and move on. What  waste.
.

4. GameSpot-ism. Cry me a river, "Gamespot is the devil", "gamespot sold out", "gamespot did blah blah blah". It doesn't matter - if all GiantBomb is to you is GameSpot minus C|NET and the TOU then that's simply incredibly sad. Y'know what? Jeff and crew don't WANT to be reminded of GS every day, they don't want you to hate on GS every day - they want you to focus on what *they're* offering and what *they're* doing. Grow the hell up, stop crying because you got modded for insulting people on some site you don't like and focus on the here and now.

.
5. Imposters. What we really needed was every minor GS celebrity, IGN celebrity, gaming notable, and game character being used as an account by some dumbass who wants to troll. "Lulz, CaseyWegner AND Yahtzee are both here!" Yeah, right, sure. Get over it - I'm the real Subrosian, message me on GS and I'll be happy to confirm that - but here? Give me a break - I've seen so many fakesters you'd think this was MySpace. Hopefully GiantBomb will let people recover their standard online identities from the hands of trolls  - because frankly it's going to be really f-ing annoying to come on GB and see eighty topics posted by someone claiming to be Kevin Vanord who clearly isn't.

1. You can click on the message to reveal it, so far I haven't seen this system misused.

2. Trolls will be dealt with when proper mods are in place, when the community settles down from the first day jitters everything will stabilize.

3. Again, it's the first day, eventually a solid group of mods will be put into action and stupid nonsense will cease to exist. Just give it some time.

4. A lot of people on these boards are coming from GS, and Jeff doesn't seem to have any hard feelings over what happened. Look at him now, he's much more successful here running things the way he wants.

5. The forums are busting with activity, in a couple days it will settle down (as I have mentioned numerous times so far in this post). Right now, people want attention, friends, and are exploring the website.

Y'know what? If GiantBomb is listening or reading this, I volunteer myself to the task. We need *common sense* moderation. You shouldn't get moderated for a few bad words, minor insults, or stating your point of view. However, if someone is just spamming and repeatedly being a dick, then we need to close their topics and give them a warning. In other words, if all of you think that something is disruptive to the board, then it is - if everyone is like "woah, mod, we want this topic open" (so long as it's not like - kiddie porn) then it should be. You need a mod you can turn to and say "hey, what's up? Listen this is how I feel about _________ and I want you to explain why you did _____________" and get an answer. Someone who admits when they've messed up.

I think they should go into a topic and say "look, what's your intent here?" and give you a chance to explain -  but we need *some* form of control here. Otherwise, it's just going to be nuts - we can't expect a bunch of people on their own to have the courtesy to keep "character wars" down to a couple of topics, or to not bump spam posts.

.

However it doesn't *have* to be myself - we just need *someone* - anyone who meets the above criteria - and we need a constraint on them - they answer to Jeff and crew. If you guys are unhappy with them, then that mod gets sat down, and they explain why they did what they did. But we need someone with that power we can turn to.

I'd say it's a little premature to get upset over those things.  Give it a bit of time and things will even out.  You make some good points, but overall these boards seem to be doing well right now.

Oh god. The last thing we need is a bunch of people volunteering to be mods. Giantbomb will pick whoever they think are suited if they pick anyone and that is that. If you really think a brief paragraph in a thread about "Clucking up" is going to get you moderated think again.

These boards are being trolled by 4chan and GameSpot and who knows what else right now, and there's not a single staff or moderator on who can deal with it. It's the Beta, that means it's extremely important we voice the concerns *now*. If you're serious about GiantBomb being a good site in the long run, now is not the time to praise it - sure, you can send your friends, but we've got to be brutal 'salt in wounds' honest about the glitches, forums setup, moderation, etc or in the long run you're going to have just another message board that gets flooded at the beginning then dies out because it's unusable.

The problem is that with that is that  subjective moderation is a slippery slope. Not that it can't be done but you have to have a group of moderators that the forums can really trust decision making wise or else it's either too "nazi" or too "loose" should people be banned for calling each other racial slurs? I think thats agreeable. But for stuff like C*** or M*****F****** it's gray area and debatable which is kind of the problem with moderation in general. Gamespot had to resort to a strict policy because the shear amount of posts made it impossible to take care of on a case by case basis and instead it would be is or is not this against the TOS. That's how I understand the situation at least.

Glad to see you here, subrosian. It's nice to know you'll be posting here with your consistently well reasoned, thoughtful posts.

Anyway, even though I do like the ability to rate posts, I don't understand why it's necessary to hide them, especially when everyone has the ability to un-hide them (though taking that ability away would be disastrous). What does that accomplish? I guess it will be humorous to find stupid posts hidden upon clicking on a thread, but in the end it just adds a pointless step that will slow down speedy browsing. And while it's not that big of a deal now, it could be when, as subrosian stated, it begins to be abused.

And it will be.

The most egregious things I've seen are people doing stupid things for attention and a lot of foul language.  If the first thing bothers you, don't post in their forums.  I'll admit I've made the mistake of posting in a few of them today out of anger, but once you start to ignore them they either go away or become a laughing stock.  As for the second, have you listened to the Bombcast?  They aren't saying cunt and fuck every other word, but they aren't holding it back as far as I can tell.  I believe that sets a precedent for freedom in language on the site.

Moderation for spammers is a no-brainer, but unless they decide that list threads are a bane to the site, who is it really hurting?  If you don't like the mess you see when you bring up the main forum page, then find the topic you were wanting to talk about and create or use a thread there.  That seems to be the point of this massive database they've been working so hard on.  So that if you want to talk about something, hell anything, there will be a place on this website for you to discuss it.  Whether or not the poster below you calls you "fagballs" is a matter of human nature, welcome to the internet.

I'm rather disapointed Subrosian, while you provide some good points you just come off as another hater. If you don't like Giant Bomb, fine you can stay on Gamespot. But this is still a beta, and it is still incomplete. Lots of those problems will probably be remedied soon enough and I think we are going to have real mods soon enough, just with less power than the GS one's most likely.

Nice start eh, just make an annoying complaining topic that barely contributes to the community.  If you don't like it, just take yourself and your crap back with you to GameSpot where you can cry about Peter Molyneux and other pointless dribble all you want.

I'm only participating in the Beta because I appreciate gaming and think it's good for people to have  a news source. The whole "let's leave GS for GiantBomb" thing makes zero sense to me. I say that because any news source is fallable, anyone can make mistakes, and I feel it takes away from what Jeff is doing if the main reason people want to leave is to basically have unregulate SW :|

This is a Beta and I'm doing what a GOOD Beta tester should do - pointing out what need to be fixed. Y'know who the most useless person is in any Beta? The guy who tells you what a good job you're doing, and how much they love EVERY LITTLE THING about your unfinished product. You wind up releasing something where no one tells you about the bugs they "thought would be fixed".

Y'know, they picked these features (such as + / -) and as you've already demonstrated yourself, you're using it to avoid a well-written post because it contains the scary idea that this site isn't perfect. They know it's not perfect, that's why it's called a BETA and why I'm making SUGGESTIONs.

I think people need to give the site a couple of weeks before they say "they messed up because of X". Beta people. Beta.

You know unless someone is completely braindead, they can simply press the "Show me this anyway" or whatever it's called button and see whatever message they like. It's not like you can no longer see this message AT ALL because some people voted that it's a bad comment.

And who here is saying they like every little thing about the website? I love the website but I've pointed out the need for mods and certain things lacking in the system as a whole. The site was released 2 days ago so they haven't gotten all the problems out of the system.

And the reason you see quite a few people on here saying that they aren't going back to gamespot is not because they want to stir up a swearing shit-storm, it's because they want a place were they can post stuff without fear of some dumbass moderator completely misinterpreting what they are saying and suspending them like a nazi. Or, maybe it's because they haven't seen a hyped up game that hasn't gotten a super high score on Gamespot for a LONG time.

Or maybe because they're just sick and tired of the stagnating community.

Some people still trust gamespot and some of us don't

The purpose of a beta is to iron out bugs and fix things that aren't working properly. Feedback and constructive criticism from the community makes that job easier.

I know this, but I think a lot of the things people are talking about will be sorted within the first couple of weeks. I'm not saying there is no place for posts like this, but people are posting a lot of "This is how you screwed up" messages rather than "Here is an idea for improvement" posts.

That button is not working in IE7, it only reveals the top half of the letters on the first half of the post on the OP. In other words, the "show me this anyway" feature does not work on the first post in a thread sometimes.

Exactly. Unfortunately some people are scared these changes will be implemented. Some people are wanting to come here simply to swear, troll, and bash and think that makes this place "better". They're scared that the majority will favor sensible moderation, common sense features (don't allow the OP to be rated below 0) and changes that would prevent this site from becoming the next Digg / YouTube in terms of comment quality.

Frankly, if they don't make those changes during the Beta, and this is reflective of the final site, we're going to wind up with a place where there's no incentive to go on the forums, because of how much junk will be posted.

Hopefully GiantBomb will let people recover their standard online identities from the hands of trolls  - because frankly it's going to be really f-ing annoying to come on GB and see eighty topics posted by someone claiming to be Kevin Vanord who clearly isn't."

Well I do think that there needs to be a lot of moderation. I mean the best forum for conversation is forums.somethingawful.com and they are incredibly strict (even so far as charging $10 for an account so people don't want to get banned!).

No they definitely shouldn't do this - when you have a system that is open to abuse it makes no sense to try and fix it with another equally open to abuse system - what if someone used the name "SuperJake" on Youtube, someone else uses it on the FAQs, someone else uses it on IGN, and yet another person registered it here - how do you resolve that?  If someone has an account they only use for trolling, punish or ban that account no matter what the name is, the issue isn't the name, it's the trolling.   If you were too slow off the mark to get your name registered on a new website then too bad, that's just how it goes sometimes, time to think up a new name.

Thank you , subrosian. It takes people like you to remind us that yes, this is a beta, and beta members are supposed to provide feedback, especially about negative qualities

Mods and rules will surely be applied eventually as it's sort of obvious we need some of that. But it doesn't hurt to discuss it, what sort of moderation we'd like and whatnot. And the +/- system is questionable. Groups of people can effectively hide whatever posts they don't like. The ability to report abuse would work better I reckon, let the mods moderate the board....when we get some of those. Has self-moderation ever worked on the internet?
