How is obese defined? Bodybuilders are "obese" on numerous scales.
When your so damn fat it's a serious health issue. I'm not too sure at what body fat percentage obesity is drawn at. But you've seen fat people, then you see those people that need the scooters to get around Wal-Mart because they've been so fat for so long they've destroyed their knees.
I'm just saying, with the information given I don't know the definition of obese. How they got the number? What is scale? How/what are they measuring? The population of MS isn't anywhere near that of NY (or CA), so 34% become more meaningless. What are the age groups measured? These are all pertinent to what 34% really means.
My problem is that the BMI score is a relic (and that's what they used according to appendix B), as is the Army's weight score is just as bed (you know the people who are taped after a PT test). 6'1 and 230lbs is fat, until you realize that the person is 8% body fat.
Age, gender, genetics, and the like all play a role. In the study they weren't accounting for that. They looked at the BMI, Hypertension (which is a symptom not a cause of obesity), and diabetes (which is a symptom not a cause of obesity).
Statistics are dangerous, and when misused (specifically in the medical field), they cost lives. They are manipulated for political and economic gain. That's what makes me mad.
I'm a skeptic, and I pay for it. If what I said offends you I apologize.
Those people who are too fat to walk really make me sad. I work hard to stay fit and thin, and I wish others did to, if for nothing more than their own health.
