Way to go Alabama! We pulled a nice 2% lead over Mississippi! We used to be neck-and-neck with them, but our state must have started dieting recently.

By the way I've never been fat so don't call me a fatty!

Fattest states.

Here's the top 10, if you want to see the rest click the link and click a state. They'll have it listed there.

1.Mississippi (34.4%);

2. Alabama (32.3%);

3. West Virginia* (32.2%);

4. Tennessee (31.9%);

5. Louisiana (31.6%);

6. Kentucky** (31.5%);

7. Oklahoma** (31.4%);

8. South Carolina* (30.9%);

9. Arkansas (30.6%);

10. Michigan* (30.5%);

Alabama and Mississippi are the two poorest states in the US. If you go to the bigger cities like Birmingham or Biloxi, there's nowhere near 1/3 obese people. But go to the poorer areas and that's where you'll find them. They can't afford healthy food so they eat the cheap processed crap that is full of saturated fat.

There's a lot of poor people here, so they eat the cheap fatty foods to save money.

But if you looked at other surveys like "number of high school diplomas" or "poorest states", you'll see the same states near the bottom of it.

That makes sense. It's really unfortunate that it's harder to eat healthy when the dollar menu is much more affordable than the grocery store.

I can't find that top 10 list in the link. What do those asterisks mean? My state has two of them.

Edit: Ahh, I see. It means we are getting even fatter.

North Carolina rolling in at 14. Colorado is the least fat. I wouldn't mind living there, but I read the cost of living in their major cities is way up there.

When your so damn fat it's a serious health issue. I'm not too sure at what body fat percentage obesity is drawn at. But you've seen fat people, then you see those people that need the scooters to get around Wal-Mart because they've been so fat for so long they've destroyed their knees.

I agree for the most part but saturated fat is not the real enemy as it is actually part of a healthy diet (notice how there is a daily value on every food labeling). The real enemy is added sugar.

Also, woot for California! 40th in the nation! That's.....not terrible.

Connecticut is the second least fat state after Colorado, but with a 21.8% obesity rate that's still pretty horrible.

Georgia is 17th fattest. Not surprising. Southern Food is so good and not often healthy. I've actually gained a few pounds since I moved here 2 years ago. Southern Food certainly has it's effect on people.

I'm just saying, with the information given I don't know the definition of obese. How they got the number? What is scale? How/what are they measuring? The population of MS isn't anywhere near that of NY (or CA), so 34% become more meaningless. What are the age groups measured? These are all pertinent to what 34% really means.

My problem is that the BMI score is a relic (and that's what they used according to appendix B), as is the Army's weight score is just as bed (you know the people who are taped after a PT test). 6'1 and 230lbs is fat, until you realize that the person is 8% body fat.

Age, gender, genetics, and the like all play a role. In the study they weren't accounting for that. They looked at the BMI, Hypertension (which is a symptom not a cause of obesity), and diabetes (which is a symptom not a cause of obesity).

Statistics are dangerous, and when misused (specifically in the medical field), they cost lives. They are manipulated for political and economic gain. That's what makes me mad.

I'm a skeptic, and I pay for it. If what I said offends you I apologize.

Those people who are too fat to walk really make me sad. I work hard to stay fit and thin, and I wish others did to, if for nothing more than their own health.

I was actually just going for a run earlier tonight, and I saw a small car filled with two morbidly obese people. They literally, could not fit completely in the car. Their little arms were poking out the windows. I admit it, I chuckled a bit.

Seriously though, it's great that every statistical map of America has the same splits. Bad education, obesity, republicans, calling soda "coke", you name it. Always the same southern states.
