A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
The rumors surrounding a significantly redesigned PSP--one that would forgo a UMD drive in favor of internal flash storage--have been coming so hot and heavy in the lead up to E3, we were pretty sure that we'd learn all about it at Sony's press conference next week. Unfortunately for Sony's best-laid plans, a shaky-cam version of what appears to be an upcoming episode of Qore, Sony's own PSN-based promotional "video magazine," has hit YouTube, confirming the existence of the PSP Go and providing a slew of details.

In the video, Qore host Veronica Belmont speaks with what appears to be Sony marketing chief John Koller, who starts off talking about some of the games that will be available for the new PSP Go download service, name-checking franchises like Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid, as well as the already-announced LittleBigPlanet PSP game. He goes on to briefly talk about plans to roll out movie rental and purchase and TV show purchasing on the PSP Go, and it kind of sounds like there might be some portability between video purchases made on the PS3 and the PSP.

The hardware is shown briefly, and while it appears to retain the same number of buttons as its predecessor, it also looks to feature a screen that will slide down over the controls, something that was key to all the PSP Go rumors up to now, and will apparently make the PSP Go smaller than the current PSP 3000 hardware. Surprisingly, Koller says that the PSP Go will not be a replacement for the PSP 3000, which Sony will continue to sell.

Aside from the sliding screen and the smaller form-factor, the PSP Go will also feature 16GB of internal flash memory to support the whole download-only format, as well as Bluetooth for tethering to the PS3 as well as cell phones, though no specifics are given as to what kind of functionality this will provide.

Sony has still given no official confirmation about this, and I suspect we still won't hear a peep from them, despite how convincing this evidence is. Here's the YouTube video that started all this fun, though I suspect it won't take long for Sony to have this pulled.

UPDATE: Eurogamer has also unearthed a gallery of clean, high-res images of the hardware. As they say, "Somebody's PSP Go-ing to get fired."

Personally, I simply cannot see who Sony intends to market this to. What does it have for 100% new users? It’s a little more compact, but if people were not compelled to buy a PSP before, is that enough to entice them now? On the other hand, there’s the existing install base, and things look slightly worse for them. Their existing UMD library is rendered unplayable, the screen size is smaller and even the design may have sacrificed some comfort in order to become that much more compact.

Even as a mere test for digital distribution handhelds, it strikes me as 100% unnecessary as Sony could simply and efficiently test that by pushing the actual service more. Release more games, advertise the service, add $5-10 discounts compared to the store-bought copies, see the percentage of users that end up biting and gauge how it can be applied to the future handheld models. A new PSP SKU was simply not needed as the current PSP models are perfectly capable of downloading games and most every user must have a memory stick by now, thanks to the already available digital content.I’m certainly very curious about the marketing’s direction and the resulting sales. Surprise me, Sony!

I'll wait to make final judgement, but for now I'm not a fan! Looks a little lacklustre.

Let's just be glad Sony isn't WWII Britain, because the rate their stuff gets leaked, we'd have been screwed.

Sony employee: "Do you think we should, since we're designing this from the ground up, add another thumb stick?"
Sony Exec: "Nah. Who wants that? I've never heard of anyone wanting more then one."

Sony epic fail.

The new PSP looks very slick, but also I couldnt see a second thumb stick, if it has the ability to run nicer looking games, have better gameplay and amazing games, I'll buy it...

I still think that releasing a new piece of hardware, portable or not, while the economy is still this frozen is kinda crazy. That said, the no-UMD format is really brilliant. Good luck, I suppose.

Honestly, it doesn't need one. It isn't a PS2; it is allowed to have it's own control setup.

Unless they have a way of letting people rip their UMDs to this thing, I won't be buying.  I do like the whole sliding screen thing though.  I wouldn't be surprised if all portable gaming systems were download only in the next 5 years.  Don't have Wi-Fi?  Go to your local game retailer where you would buy a game anyway, turn on the Wi-Fi switch or connect it to the USB port and download your game though the kiosk.

not sure of this things worth. its going to be alongside the original psp? but if its download only that means sony are either planning to put all past games onto store for download or your buying a device that instantly has a smaller selection of games.

essentially this things worth relies on the store.

I'm kind of surprised that people were still expecting twin thumb sticks. Wasn't that pretty much squashed months ago? This isn't a hardware update, its basically the same guts as a 3000 with a new skin and delivery method.

This is really not necessary, imo.

Cool, I'm in. I still wish they had used the square-shaped mock-up that somebody made, but I'm still in. They say this is going to remain alongside the PSP-3000, but I doubt that'll last. I don't think UMD was that popular a format that new users will give a damn about it. I hope Sony does the smart thing and makes the download games cheaper as well. Sony, this can't come too soon.
