Goldeneye 007 is a first person shooter developed by Rareware (now Rare) and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. The game is based on the James Bond film by the same name and follows the film's story, taking key plot points and creating levels based on them. It was a huge critical and financial success and proved to be one of the most popular N64 games ever released. Today the game is still widely remembered, and it's without a doubt the most popular videogame in the James Bond franchise.
Gameplay
Goldeneye's gameplay is broken up into missions. The player selects a mission and is then presented with a detailed mission overview in the form of an MI6 briefing and a difficulty select of Agent, Secret Agent and 007, 007 being the hardest. Harder difficulties present more mission objectives and harder enemies. To complete a level, all primary mission objectives must be completed and the exit reached. It is up to the player how and in what order the objectives are tackled. In many levels a character can attempt to sneak past guards and cameras, or use silenced weapons and knives to kill guards to avoid attracting attention. To go about unnoticed, it would be best to go stealth with a silenced pistol or even a knife. In this way the gameplay gives an impression of openness and non-linearity. In fact many of the levels are designed in this way as well (though not all), making sure that there are multiple ways in and out of an area, giving players options for where they want to go next.
There are an assortment of guns and gadgets to choose from, many of which are modeled and named after real weapons. The gadgets present in the game are typically from the James Bond films, and are generally given to you to complete a certain task in a level. Bonds watch doubles as a multi use gadget and the pause screen which can be accessed to view current mission objectives, select weapons, or quit your current mission. Vehicles also make a brief appearance in the form of a drivable tank, complete with an operational turret and cannon.
Goldeneye was one of the first first person shooters on a video game console that showed a fps could work using a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. The analog stick on the N64 controller allowed for easier aiming than a traditional d-pad, and the incorporation of a slight auto-aim to simplify combat helped keep the action from getting frustrating. Many view Goldeneye as the father of modern console shooters.

Story
Goldeneye 007 follows the story of James Bond as he tries to stop his old partner, Alec Trevelyan, from hijacking a secret weapon, codenamed Goldeneye, and using it. The story starts with James Bond and Alec Trevelyan infiltrating the Byelomorye Dam in Arkhangelsk, USSR to destroy a secret chemical weapons facility. During the mission Alec is supposedly killed, but Bond manages to complete the mission and escape. You discover later that Alec faked his death to begin work on a plan to steal the weapon called Goldeneye. He intends to steal money from the Bank of England and then detonate Goldeneye, creating an electro magnetic pulse in the upper atmosphere which would destroy all the evidence and level the British economy. Bond tracks down Trevelyan with the help of Natalya Simonova, and together they stop him and destroy the Goldeneye.Gameplay

The Citadel
LevelGameshark users reported many references of texts to a unheard level called the Citadel. Rare confirmed the level. They said it was a rough tested level for multiplayer. Later in 2005, it was revealed to be able to acces this unplayable but viewable level by using Gameshark, however the lines totaled nearly 10K. The level contains many shapes blocks and triangles for ramps and such. This level when accessed gave good fun for rockets, sniping, heavy gunfire and bombings.Multiplayer
One of the most praised features of Goldeneye 007, is its multiplayer. It allows up to four players to compete against each other via a split-screen mode. Players can fight each other in arenas, many of which are based on locations from the single player experience. Weapons types and player appearance are customizable and many different play types are available. Play types are named after Bond movies and include:- Normal ( Deathmatch) - you play with a set amount of time and try to kill your opponent as many times as set. The can be played as 2 on 2, 2 on 1, 3 on 1 and 1 on 1.
- You Only Live Twice (player has two lives)
- The Living Daylights (capture the flag type of game)
- Man With the Golden Gun (players battle to obtain the single one hit kill golden gun)
- License to Kill (one hit kills for all weapons)
More arenas and and characters can be unlocked through completion of the single player game.
