The attraction of Natal (Kinect, whatever) for me was the laziness it introduced. Honestly, couldn't give a shit about the games they showed but the dance one. But, erm, y'know the interface stuff -- yeah, apparently it only works when you're standing up.

Right now, Kinect only works when you stand. This includes menu navigation. All the cool options to grab a slider and advance through frames of a movie you are watching only work when you are on your feet. Kinect, we've been told, has problems handling your skeletal frame while sitting. The voice commands still work, but every game we've seen and even simple menu navigation have to be done with you out of your seat. That's not exactly how I want to watch my movies. If the focus for Kinect is creating games like Dance Central that naturally would require you to be off your couch, that's great. But I have to say, no one thinks "I am driving a car!" while standing up in their living room.

Well, that's interesting. If I got the Kinect it would be for games rather than the interface stuff anyway, but that blows. Combined with the fact that there aren't any compelling games, I'm going with the Move.

Hmm, I thought the idea was to capture the casual market and I assume some of that demographic could include the elderly.  I'm going to bet we don't see many news shows airing reports of just how much grandma loves her Kinected 360.   Also, people in wheelchairs aren't going to buy this thing either, it would seem.

I dunno I thought this was pretty common knowledge, Kinect has some blatant weaknesses and you can see how it wouldn't work for lots of genres.

I think they key words there are right now. 

The whole point of Kinect is that you use your whole body to play your games, you don't just flail your arms.  With the exception of perhaps racing games and navigating the dashboard, you've have to be standing up anyway.

In more than a few demos, Kinect didn't always understand what people were saying. And these were folks without accents and in rooms without a lot of echo or noise. Kinect has a setting for audio that measures the amount of ambient noise in your room and filters it out, but until we can field test it, it's impossible to know how well this works. Accents are a bigger concern. We've been told the "hope" is that accents are not an issue. Maybe Microsoft can enlist Ubisoft for help, because EndWar used voice commands and did an excellent job accounting for accents.

In the video, a dude was sitting and navigating. Of course that could have been simulated, but it's obviously something they are working towards even if it's not yet quite right.

Because everybody knows that standing while watching movies is the ways things are done nowadays.

Hey guys guess what Kinect is going to blow ass and be even more casual then anyone ever thought the Wii was/could be.

I'm sure they are working on something to make the menus and such work while seated.

So the problem with the Wii-mote is that it doesn't work from a distance (maybe some other problems too) thanks to the sensor bar. The problem with Kinect is that it won't work while sitting down (didn't they preview a chic messing with it while sitting down last year?). Has anyone noticed any problems with the Playstation Move?

Makes sense. If you think about how Kinect gathers it's 3D data if you're sitting down whilst facing the camera your upper legs are not able to be detected so Kinect has no idea what is going on. 
 
EDIT: Which, as an aside, is the reason why motion capture studios use multiple cameras to capture the input data so that if certain joints are occluded from one angle another can pick it up.

I thought the whole multiple cameras thing was supposed to be to catch the depth of the room, including your body?

In the presentation kinect tracked that twin;s head movement while she was sitting down. I'm guessing this is a bullshit claim.

That's a potential show-stopper if it's not figured out by November.

Personally speaking, not only do I have so much shit in my microscopic studio apartment that I'd barely be able to use Kinect, but I also happen to love sitting down and, in general, just not moving around.  So this doesn't bode well for me and Kinect.

I'm over it. The only games I want for it are games I was prepared to stand for anyways.

Since they didn't name anyone, I'm going to be a bit of a dick, and say " OMG, there might have been some miscommunication with a random booth person who was asked 1500 questions in a day and a half. " 
 
Besides that, I'm with Jeffsekai, I'm getting this for the games, most of which will be done standing up anyhow.

I got a question thats been on my mind. Wii and Move have analog stick..but how will you move " Forward back words and side to side" with kentic? How would you navigate in a FPS? Or something like that?
