Play the demo right NOW!
I won't play the demo soon since my PSP currently serves as a flash drive for the Wii, but does the demo hint at the replayability aspects of Portable Ops being included? Any hints of resource gathering for later use (ammo and weapons stuffed in inventory you can only access outside gameplay, choosing what few items to get in the actual mission, etc) and choosing which area you want to tackle when, and random placement of enemies etc? I really hope it's so replayable like Portable Ops, especially since they emphasise the co-op (native support for online without ad-hoc party?). It's what I loved the most of and made me keep playing even though the controls were horrid (shooter mode sounds nice).
It's a lot more Monster Hunter the Pokemon. You earn different costumes with loadouts (the demo only gives you two) that serve useful for helping your co-op buddies (in the demo, fatigues is the more stealthy loadout while shirtless is rambo with all kinds of automatic guns and a bazooka). The guns you pick up will carry over to the next mission, but the demo doesn't give any indication of having to stockpile supplies like in PO." Playing multiplayer is really good for obtaining items that are only reachable by having a partner. I know you can lay down, but there is no indication that you can crawl in this game, so some areas that look accessible might not be without a partner.
Also, like in Monster Hunter, having co-op buddies to help you is really useful. For example, there is a tank in one of the maps for the demo and it takes forever to take out because it's very powerful and has armored soldiers accompanying it. If you have a friend though, Rambo can be the focus of their fire while the stealthy guy can use the SVD to knock out the soldiers and then both can use explosives on the tank.
Just finished playing through this. I was kind of wary, given that I thought Portable Ops was a steaming pile. At the very least, the controls for this game have been designed much more intelligently. Face buttons will never be a perfect replacement for a second analog stick when it comes to camera and aiming controls, but a fairly generous auto-aim allows this scheme to work just fine. This demo was a nice reassurance for me; it would have been heartbreaking to have to endure another terrible MGS game on the PSP.
