Overview
Metal Slug: Super Vehicle -001 came out in 1996, starting what would become a hugely popular franchise. With it's run and gun gameplay requiring twitch reactions and an itchy trigger finger, it kept many players going with this addictive gameplay. Metal Slug was originally on the Neo Geo NVS, but eventually was ported to the Neo Geo CD, Saturn, PlayStation, and Wii Virtual Console. It was also a part of the Metal Slug Anthology collection. Although the technology was much further along than the tech used to design the game, the developers have said that the whole franchise is meant to have a late 1980's, early 90's arcade look.
Plot
The storyline of Metal Slug is set in the near future of 2028, with two factions locked in a power struggle. The Regular Army is a modern army run by nations across the world. The Rebellion is made up of several small militant groups, including terrorists. Corruption within the Regular Army is common, and causes various intelligence failures. One of these intel failures causes the defection of Vice Admiral Morden to the Rebellion after his son is killed in a bombing that took place because of an intelligence failure of which the Regular Army is to blame. He self-promotes himself to general status upon defection.
The year 2026, the Rebellion launched a large-scale attack on the Regular Army forces around the world under Morden's command. This caught the Regular Army by surprise and the Rebellion nearly annihilated the Regular Army through superior numbers and new technologies. This prompted a massive counter-attack by the Regular Army, to be aided by advanced tanks dubbed "Super Vehicle-001". These tanks were captured by the Rebellion forces however, and Marco Rossi along with Tarma Roving rally the remaining Regular Army units in an operation to take back the tanks. This is where Metal Slug begins.
Gameplay
You play as either Marco Rossi or Tarma Roving, and are armed with pistols, kicks, machine guns, powerups, and the metal slug tanks. Metal Slug's gameplay is essentially basic run and gun gameplay much similar to that of Contra's. The player is pit against a massive slew of enemies constantly attacking and spawning. The objective is for the player to gun their way through each level, freeing prisoners and collecting items on the way. In addition to the normal grunt enemies, there are also boss battles which require the player to empty large amounts of ammo into the bosses before they fall. The protagonists has melee attacks, namely knifing and kicking.
The metal slug vehicles encountered throughout the levels serve not only as additional fire power, but also added protection against the normal 1-hit death health vulnerability. These are the advanced tanks named "Super Vehicle-001".
The boss battles in Metal Slug can absorb many shots and are often much larger than normal enemies (much like conventional bosses), they are often encountered at the end of certain levels and have a vulnerability or weak point that needs to be exploited by the player (also like conventional bosses). These boss battles are often of high difficulty (again, just like conventional bosses) and some take great skill to defeat.
