A fine sequel that takes the fun parts of the original (the combat, the characters, the dialogue) and tries to make those the focus while practically quartering off the weaker parts. By being the high-quality, consistently enjoyable action game it wanted to be the first time around, Desperate Struggle is now a must-buy, and at the very least, finally makes the series deserving of the evangelism surrounding it.

Quirky, crass, and incredibly fun, Suda51's stylish sequel to 2008's No More Heroes slashes its way onto the Wii with even more boss battles, much-improved gameplay, and loads of worthwhile new content.

No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle is undeniably rough around the edges, but the same can be said about Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. Grasshopper’s vision for Travis’s tale goes uncompromised at the expense of refinement, but one could argue that the cracks and fuzz are an intentional part of the overall punk aesthetic (given the developer’s track record, it’d be tough to argue they’re not intentional).

A bizarre, wonderfully trashy sequel, No More Heroes 2 adds a ton of cool new activities and boss fights without messing too much with what worked the first time. It wears thin toward the end, but until then it’s one of the most brilliant experiences the Wii has to offer.

The game never gets too heavy though; the simple-but-fun beat-em-up combat and ridiculous boss scenarios rise above any minor remaining issues with No More Heroes 2...Finally, Suda51 delivers a game that almost anyone can appreciate.

I'm really interested in what gamespot will give it. They rated the first game 9.0, and from what I have heard and seen, there is no single element in Desperate Struggle that is not considerably better or better executed than it was in the first game, plus more content and general polish.

Still mad about the exclusion of MotionPlus, though.

Wow, I never knew tiny Grasshopper made AAA productions >__>

I don't need to read a single review of this game... I think Kevin Van Ord of Gamespot is destined to give it a good score, I know he like me is a huge fan of the game.

I would assume that both TvC and this will end up in the 89-range. This in combination with the release of the Fatal Frame IV patch make for a good start of 2010 for Wii owners. :)

@Linkyshinks: That fight is a bitch... The way the platforming works with Shinobo makes it way harder then it should be. However there is a way to get rid of him easily but I am not going to save anyone the frustration by telling ^^

"AAA" is not synonymous with "good", you know.

Either way, I'm pretty interested in this game, but I feel like I have to play the first one first. With the Q1-Q2 release fiesta, the Fatal Frame IV translation, and a bunch of 2009 games I haven't had an opportunity to pick up yet(Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories), I'm not going to find myself with enough spare money to buy two Wii games -- one new, expensive one, and one old, yet almost as expensive one(Wii games practically never get price drops) -- anytime soon.

@Icemael: No More Heroes is surprisingly cheap compared to other Wii games, I got mine new for $20 over a year ago and I can only imagine it has to be less used somewhere on the net. Was a nice surprise since like you said most Wii games never freaking price drop.

Oh, of all people I know best. Many of my favourite games received extremely mixed reviews, while very often I find myself disliking the "big" , hyped and then ridiculously scored releases.
As always, I am merely advertising stuff that I'd like to see sell well.

I don't suppose the American version works on a PAL Wii does it? First Wii game since the last NMH that I'm interested in and a legal dispute means it's still TBA.

    I see.

Wait, wouldn't you want No More Heroes to be a commercial failure? It hardly advancesinteractive audiovisual storytelling in any way, and it's deliberately ridiculous, stupid and excessively violent in a fashion very similar to Bayonetta.

A Suda 51 accepted by the entire journalism community? Either he finally figured it out or he totally messed up.

These review scores are really bothering me... The game is a major stepback from the first one. The story is bare-bones, they took out the assassin  side jobs (Sure, they were repetitive, but I can only handle those 8-bit mini games so many times. The assassination gigs were faster ) they took out the open world (which I grew to like very much in the first one) and the ending is a complete mess...

Why is it such a surprise that they is being received well? The first one was brilliant. Why wouldn't the second?

AAA really refers to the size of the production and promotional budget of a game, ya know. It doesn't have anything to do with reviews.

I was really annoyed by the final boss, and the final cut scenes kinda undid the whole "who cares about characters, this is just a crazy videogame" theme that the game opened with. But everything before that, I was digging the hell out of.  Just as kick-ass as the first game.

And that's the main reason why I rescind my previous statement. That and the Shinobu section.
