PS3 doesn't turn on at all, and you only see a yellow light. Seen my friend's do this, he lives in a smoking environment so his launch PS3 crapped out on him for sure.

@TwoOneFive: "YLOD" can be caused by a lot of things. Overheating, Lens failure, CPU or GPU failure, HDD failure, dust settlements in your system, poor ventilation area, power surges (thats why its always good to have your electrical devices connect to a good surge protector) , software failure.

okay well my ps3 shut off, flashed a yellow light then turned red immediately.

i am able to turn it back on. it just doesn't last long. i keep doing the fan test to clean out as much dust as possible and i am going to sit it in a really cool part of my house overnight.
    i think its just overheating.

Surprisingly, I hear more about the yellow light than I do about RROD now. I know it's just because RROD is so common it's hardly worth mentioning when you get one, but still, it's really weird.

its just surprising whenever somebody gets ylod so they feel the need to talk about it.
i think i got it but im still able to turn on my ps3 for about 5 minutes then everything slows down and eventually shuts off.

it is a very rare issue and i know PS3 owners get a little annoyed whenever they see something about it.

I hate even calling it yellow light of death, because that is basically for disgruntled 360 owners who esperienced RROD.  Besides, I don't even think the problem is widespread enough to even have its own name.

I may try to fix it myself.
I have a heat gun, and i can can swing by radio shack for that thermal liquid stuff.

Between me and my 14 year old brother and my dad who loves watching blu-rays, my ps3 has been on practically non-stop for almost 2 years so i'm glad it lasted this long.

I didn’t get the yellow light of death But I did get the three beeps and a red light of death, The damn thing swallowed a rental disc.
Sony was good about it though three months off warranty and still gave me a new one I even got my Hdd back.
although I could not be arsed to swap it around and lost all my game saves and Installs.

Yeah lol... although my brother has had his 360 since launch and it has been fine somehow. My other brother bought it about a year ago, and has had the rrod 3 times already. Pretty much everyone with a 360 I know has had a rrod at least once. But big deal really, it's still a great console and lots of fun.

Every now and then my PS3 will freeze on me, and when I do a soft shutdown using the button, I get a three-beep, blinking red light thing going on.  But  when I turn the system back on, it's fine.

@Kr3lian: Thats what mine did, only once it never turned back on. I would get random freezes on games like Oblivion, far cry 2 and Orange Box. The later was the game which broke my system for good. Looking back I think my PS3 may have been bad from the start and over time kept getting worse and worse. So far so good on my current PS3, no freeze ups, knock on wood.

@super_machine: I dunno man, every system I have ever had has locked up from time to time.  I don't think it is necessarily a harbinger of doom.  I just think you got really unlucky.  I guess if mine bricks, I'll get a slim...but I doubt it will brick.  The PS3 is a really nice piece of hardware.

I remember this happened to me two times last year, the first year I got my PS3. I got it January of 2008, and it broke in June, right after school ended. I remember that I was going to play a COD4 match and I was at the screen where it's loading the map for everyone to play on. I swear my screen froze or something because it was over 5 minutes of waiting so I was like screw it, so I pressed the back button (I call it the "Emergency Switch") and when I started my PS3 back up, I couldn't play disc games.

So I sent it in and urged for a new PS3 but they repaired it anyways, and didn't get it back until mid to late July. One fucking month later, it broke again! Thankfully, Sony has nice customer service so they understood how pissed I was and got a brand new one. One thing I noticed about it is that is doesn't sound like an engine when I turn it on or play online anymore, the other one overheated easily even when I didn't play it for a week. So I'm pretty sure overheating has alot to do with it, just like the RROD.

i think the ps3 is still a top quality product and no where near as prone to dying as, well not to incite fanboy rage or anything, the 360.

I once had the "neon pink with splotches of yellow and beige" light of death.  It's hard to explain what happened exactly, but let's just say my PS3, rake, three gerbils, and Frosted Flakes will never be the same again.

I got the yellow light of death last week and have since been looking on the internet and gaint bomb on more details and advance.
What happened? Did you managed to get your PS3 repaired in the end? Did you get to keep your saved data, trophies and whatnot?

    @nxh:
I got the yellow warning light because my launch PS3's fan failed. I called Sony support and they sent me a box to ship it to them. I found out that dust and pet hair had become bound around the fan and caused it to fail. I had backed up my saves and everything 6 months before. Everything I downloaded from PSN had to be re-activated and redownloaded, that took a bit. My wife loves Singstar and it took a few emails to get those reactivated for download. Also the PSN video store needed a separate email. I think it cost $150 for repair and replacement, worth it since I got to redownload all my stuff.

@TwoOneFive:  Awesome! =] Well, I live in the UK. That's around about the same price I'm paying for mine to get repaired. Just hope my HDD will be okay. =S
And  if all of my game data is still safe, I'm going to be back it all up, so if it does the ylod again, I reckon I'm going to get a ps3 slim and transfer all my data onto the slim.
Considering if I can afford that lol.

Bought an Arcade a  while back, never died, but I traded it towards a slim when Gamestop was running there credit towards a slim thing a year or so ago. I'd say 80% of my friends have had RROD and about 75% of those friends also had YLOD, I just assume it's how you treat your consoles. I haven't had, in my 2 decades of gaming, a single console fail, because I treat them like the investments that they are. Though my fat PS1 tried, oh I played the shit out of that thing, actually put it on a cooling rack used for baking because I feared heat failure so much.
