I agree. I don't think scary is the right word. I found that it made me very tense though, especially for the first few hours of the game.  
 
I don't know what your audio set-up is like, but playing with surround headphones definitely ups the spookiness of the atmosphere. 
 
I likened it to a haunted house in that things jump out at you at expected times, and you continually stumble upon creepy vignettes crafted to make you feel uneasy.

I noticed this too. I think it's just the in-game light during the early morning hours. I don't care for it either, but I can see how they're trying to go for natural lighting.

Mass Effect 2 for me, Epic Steve, but I can understand Red Dead Redemption being GOTY for a lot of folks.

Just for fun, I named my class "ASSAULT!!" when I created it, and it worked just fine. Not sure why it worked for me -- maybe all caps and two exclamation points somehow tricked the system, but a couple of my friends ran into the same problem you did.
