My 50 Favorite Games of All Time

As part of my adaption of moving all my old blogs from GameTrailers to Giant Bomb, I decided to give my Top 50 games of all time. Though it's a bit different having 1 and up, and not 50 to 1. I will start from my all time favorite game to my all time top 50th.

Warning:This list will contain opinions that may differ from yours.

List items

  • My all-time favorite game is perhaps the most argue, debated, and flaming in the long renowned Final Fantasy series. This was the first PSone game I ever played, and RPG game. So me and this game has a bit of history. This game also drew me into more games with in depth story and characters. With it's cast of interesting characters, full 3D graphics, easy to play battle system. I am always drawn to this game every 6 months. It's in my blood that I must play this often. And perhaps always(by means of nostalgic perhaps)be my favorite game of all time.

Thank god for the PSN being playable on the PSP.

  • This classic is simultaneously both my favorite SNES and Arcade game of all time. You must know I am a BIG Ninja Turtles fan, even at the age of 21 I still pop in my TMNT DVDs and be a kid again. This 4 player classic did what many other TMNT can't do; make the game right by following it's source material. From Bebop and Rocksteady, Shredder, Krang,(and many others in the SNES port). The gameplay is fun, simple, addictive, and challenging all the same time. When I was a young lad I would always have $3 dollars in quarters ready to play again. Even today that I have it downloaded on my computer, the SNES cartridge, the XBLA remake. I'm always drawn to this arcade classic.

  • This somewhat inbalance fighter is my all time fighter. The fun gameplay, the large cast of 56 fighters. My favorite Cable as a great fighter. The jazz music(yes I love it), the funny announcer. This great define my high school arcade days as it dwell into oblivion. I was flipping when I read the announcement of it being in XBLA last year. Many fear my team of Cable, Iron-Man, and Felicia.

And yes with Deadpool MvC3 will indeed rock.

  • The first video game I ever played(as far as my child brain cells remembers). I remember waking up from a nap and see the Genesis near my TV and my two older brothers playing this game. It wasn't long after till I got my hands on the blue speedball and my childhood gaming icon was born(suck it Mario). I carried pride with Sega's "Sega does what Nintendon't"(yes even I was a fanboy at a young age). This game will always give me love for Sonic as others bash him.

    Sonic Unleashed FTW.

  • You might be shock to see this ignore sequel so high in my list. Well this game and I got a history. You see I live in Orlando all my life and during the infamous 2004 hurricanes. And for 2 weeks all I had was my PS2, and this game. The great music, addictive gameplay, and decent story with a debatable ending twist. This set in stone for Star Ocean being among my favorite series.

Yes I enjoyed "The Last Hope".

  • I will admit; 1998 was a big year for me as a gamer(especially being a new "core" gamer) and like many others on the internet. Off the heels of Christmas of 1997 and playing Final Fantasy VII for days on end. My brother rented this spin-off of the famous series, and I was drawn by it's strategy elements, music, and many other things. I am amaze that a spin-off is more greater for me then it's main series counterparts.

I do have the PSP remake/port. I'm giving credit due to the original PSone classic.

  • The best to way to describe Xenogears' story is...well...tough. It's focus on religion and beliefs was so controversial that Square almost didn't release it in the U.S. Thankfully myself(and others) got to enjoy this classic despite being rushed and somewhat unfinished. The fun geared, and combo gameplay, the great music by Yasunori Mitsuda. I had to trade in 20 old PSone games and years of search for a copy, and yes it was worth it.

I did play Xenosaga and I will admit I have been harsh on it.

  • 1999, the Dreamcast was near. Gamers will eying Final Fantasy VIII(as was I). But this certain game appear in PlayStation Magazine and my game rental that carried rarer games then Blockbuster. Renting this(along with the soundtrack and making of) this classic shows that you can make a simple game mechanic and focus on the plot and still make a game for the ages. Shame that this game series doesn't get enough love.

Yes I got the PSP remake, I waited two hours at Gamestop waiting for it, and god yes I want a Lunar 2 PSP remake.

  • As a geek of Sci-Fi I fell in love with Bioware's Space Opera. Being among the first "next-gen" experience after getting my 360. The game's epic story, characters(Wex's for the win), fun gameplay(feels broken thanks to ME2), and it's Blade Runner inspire soundtrack. I actually overheated my 360 from this game.

Mass Effect 2 had better gameplay, the rest was better part 1 in my opinion.

  • The sequel to History Greatest Adventure is perhaps the only sequel that deals with the after effects of your playthrough of one's game directly. The music is a masterpiece and to me even 10 years later none has surprise it's opening movie, and soundtrack. This is the sole reason I love it more then Trigger.

And I bought for $6(go EBGames and clearance of PSone games).

  • It's quite shocking to see a handheld up so high among classics seen on consoles. Well Golden Sun is among the very few handheld games to surpassed console games with it's amazing details, soundtrack, and gameplay. Why Lost Age? Well Felix > Issac.

And yes I can't wait for Dark Dawn later this year!

  • I'll admit I play "Fallout 3" first. But I love the original the most as it had amazing characters and one of the first Deep CRPGs I ever played. Goes to show a 1998 over the top game has a more convincing atmosphere then most modern games.

And yes I love Fallout 3 so clam down with old school pride.

  • As a kid growing up in the early 90's play arcade games like it was never gonna to end(sadly it did), the only other game to get as much money from me(as in "me" I mean my parents) was X-Men. With 6 players, the fun never stopped on this fun game. Some bastard had to be Dazzler every time ha ha.

Damn it why isn't this on XBLA!?

  • Who knew capturing 150 monsters will be a global hit and a icon of the 90's? I can still remember kids my elementary school gathering around trading cards, Pokemon. God those were the days growing up.

Nintendo and their ways of sucking money off your pocket.

  • Perhaps of one gaming's first series best game. The gameplay is fun and I enjoyed the playing Alcurad the most. The creepy music, the "Metroid style" gameplay(I never played Metroid until 2003's Fusion), and RPG elements.

There are other great Castlevania games. *points to avatar*

  • The RPG that I didn't know what to expect. It blew my mind by how great the game is even in 2001(a week before Final Fantasy X). Damn shame it ended without a proper conclusion.

No really I want a third game with Yuri.

  • As much as I loved all other GTAs. This one is my favorite for

    The Characters

    The Settings

    THE SOUNDTRACK!

Yes this game still provides hours of entertainment and I find this a lot better then clones of it(Saint's Row anybody?).

  • You got to admit; most movie games don't...turn out well. Rockstar took a cult-hit movie and make a beat-em-up(rare in this day and age sadly). By not just getting many of the original actors, following the plot, but having a prequel made showing the starts of the Warriors' rise. This game shows that modern movie games can be done right.

  • The sequel to the cult hit on the Dreamcast takes another spray on it's great soundtrack, characters, and gameplay. Though somewhat more simplify painting tools. This game might turn a few heads away, but this game is what you do with a bebop techno jazz soundtrack.

    Sega what's the hold up?

  • While many games drop support after a year Team Fortress 2 keeps giving updates to players and for free(121 updates to be correct)! The game is badass and always a blast to play. With the comic style graphics, funny characters, this online mulitplayer is a modern classic.

*waits for Meet the Medic and Pyro*

  • The first MMO I ever played(as many others have). The game was fun, the music was amazing and the development of your character was long and worth it. This is perhaps the highlight of the Dreamcast.

And yes I still play online to this day.

  • A game so popular that it gained it's own show. Not many can claim that. The game was fun and my favorite Mario for it's fun game design. Not much can be say after what I wrote.

    Many of you can agree.

  • One of the best Sega games I ever played. The game was fun with a friend and the techno soundtrack is one of gaming's best in my opinion.

And like many other Sega franchises, I say what's the goddamn hold up?

  • If a vampire needed to take form into a game. It'll be this. Seriously it sucks time away from you. It's addictive, it's fun, a great set of music. And yes Sid Meier is among my favorite game developers.

Take that Shafer and Noruma fans!(Hironobu Sakaguchi is the best).

  • This is one of the first games I ever played with a deep and cinematic story. The music was great. A big shocker for me as the commercial was nothing like the game itself.

It felt great playing this in 1998 and beyond(screw you nanomachines)!

  • Sid Meier sure knows how to make games to suck time away. Pirates was a fun game, yet short in content, it's fun gameplay makes up for it. Really shows that being a Pirate is a cool life(though short).

I really do wish Mr. Meier would make a part II one day.

  • Why do you think they call it History Greatest Adventure? What started as a simple rescue friend quest turned into one to save the future of your planet. With it's great music, characters, and simple gameplay this has prove to be one of Square's best.

And like Sega "What's the hold up?"

  • *seagull laugh* This installment in the Final Fantasy series showcased the PS2's awesome power so early in it's lifespan and became a big contender when the Xbox and GameCube were released.

    *seagull laugh*

  • My favorite in the Fire Emblem series. This game added many features that was needed(out of story leveling) and the cast was great.

    My personal favorite Nintendo franchise.

  • One of the best JRPGs this gen and not many play it. It felt like playing a new leap in Final Fantasy(some have claim the "true FFXI". This is a great game and show be play.

    You really should.

  • The SRPG that surpass it's underground following and underway to be a franchise. The gameplay is amazing and characters were likable.

    Let's go part 2, don't disappoint.

  • I love the Street Fighter series, and perhaps the best(in my opinion) is the third strike of III(hur der). The balance is well done, the characters are great, and the music is stunning.

  • The world is in chaos, and you Agent Denton will change the world forever. This game has some of the best story and music in a game. Really gives that New World Order feeling.

    Go Deus Ex 3?

  • This RPG was recommended by almost user on GameTrailers and RPG lovers, and when I finally bought I fell in love with the lore behind The Witcher, the gameplay is amazing, the story is engaging. A really top notch game from a unknown developer at the time.

    Witcher 2 will beat all.

  • One of my favorite Mario games, this was fun. The music was great, the characters for this game were amazing. Could never get into Paper Mario.

Worth a playthrough on the Wii.

  • I wouldn't call it the last good C&C cause I loved Generals and Red Alert 3. But this is my favorite cause of the cast and the craziness that it packed

EA you gone and goof up with Westwood didn't ya?

  • The biggest game launch(before Modern Warfare 2) and this game rock! Yeah I know some were disappointed after the "craziness" of San Andreas. Well....no. This game was big for me. The city felt alive, the characters finally were convincing and care able. And the pick your poison ending.

    A modern classic.

  • This game reminds me of an Indiana Jones fib game. This underrated Xbox game has fun gameplay and a great twist of an alternative 1930's America.

    Microsoft should revive this game.

  • You all should know I love the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. But my all time favorite fares from World Tour. The reason the music? Incubus(DLC), Queen(DLC), The Doors, Muse, 311, Sublime, Blondie, Steve Miller Band, Metallica,Van Halen, Wings, Foo Fighters, The Police, Pat Benatar, Jimmy Eat World, R.E.M., Billy Idol, Fleetwood Mac, and Bob Seger.

inb4 Rock Band 3 has all.

  • The highly underrated Irrational Games' classic brings a kudos to the Golden and Silver age of comics by bringing a cast of loveable heroes, mods, and great announcer.

This game is cheap on Steam(please get it and support for a part 3).

  • The unknown(at the time) western game from Rockstar. I loved the Spaghetti Western music, and film grin. The gameplay was decent at best. But I love me some Spaghetti Western(who doesn't love a John Wayne, Clint Eastwood movie).

  • The offline MMO some had dub, .hack takes place in a MMO. The game was fun and I enjoyed the series, the very few anime franchise I enjoy. Shame I never gotten to finish the series as my memory card died out.

    I should finish.

  • Yes we all know how awesome Smash Bros. is. Brawl was better why?

    1.Ike

    2.Sonic

I do love all Smash games, but come on it even had Snake.

    Yep.

  • Perhaps the most recent game to enter the list. Torchlight is basically a Diablo Clone. But the game's fun and easy mechanics and mods made it into my top and my favorite hack and slash...until Diablo III.

    Needed mulitplayer.

  • You should know I enjoyed The Sims since it's beginning 10 years ago. The one I had the best time was the second installment. 3D, better mods, a lot of difference. I still enjoyed Sims 3. But I can remember pouring the most time into Sims 2 outta the whole series.

    Damn addictive.

  • You should know I love wrestling, more preferring WWF's Attitude Era. I was surprise how awesome this game was after playing Smack Down on the PS1. The cast was awesome, the game was fun, and it represents the best era of wrestling.

    The good old days.

  • That one game no one ever played. Ok not nobody but this game was ingored quicky and was an amazing game. Wish LucasArts would do a sequel.

  • Yes yes I enjoyed Call of Duty, deal with it. My most favorite was 2008's version were WWII's theater was at for one more run. And well what a run. Keifer Sutherland, and Gary Oldman lending their voices to make powerful campaigns.

    Also Nazi Zombies.

  • Bioware's latest RPG bought the first taste of WRPGs that was model after Baldur's Gate. I find myself playing this often with it's great cast, and mods.

Though I am getting anger by Bioware's ignorance of being "Top Dog".

  • Most X-Men games often get ignored, but this one brings RPG and beat-em-up together and made into a great game. Though i wish there was a new Legends with all X-Men again.
