Games I Finished in 2019
new year, new list
new year, new list
Some pretty clever puzzles wrapped in an interesting enough narrative. Reminiscent of Portal, but still definitely its own thing.
Fun little arcadey shooter.
Top tier Phoenix Wright game - really liked the main story arc of the anti-lawyer country and the spiritual / religious gameplay elements that reflect the narrative.
Really cool mix of platforming and adventure game style puzzles with some GORGEOUS art.
Funny little retro-style game.
Boy this game really is a "super challenge", as advertised. Fun though!
Really liked this game, has a very unique vibe to it.
Finally played this classic (via the new 'Sega Ages' release) JRPG. Not my favorite game ever, but a very interesting piece of history to have experienced.
Really enjoyed this game!
Really impressed with this game. Great entry in the series (although the storytelling is a little disjointed but interesting), and the PSVR missions are phenomenal as well.
Interesting mix of a 2D action game and The Stanley Parable, essentially. There are a lot of cool moments to be had here, and the combat is surprisingly solid.
Boy, this is the first game in a while that really made me feel old, it's a hell of a test of your reflexes even just halfway through.
This game is also a bit of a dexterity test, but one that I can handle. I love the realistic art on the food too! This game has a surprising amount of writing, all of it quite hilarious. You get a ton of flavor text emails in game, as well as bizarre backstories of the restaurants you can work at, and all the food you can make.
Played Snakebird Primer after watching the quick look, fun puzzle game reminiscent of something like Stephen's Sausage Roll (although not nearly as brutal as that game).
Played through this game again after Klei put out the "Remastered" version, glad to see it still completely holds up as one of my favorite games ever. Even 100%-ed it this time, getting every high score and collectible :)
Played through the Octo Expansion content for this finally. A ton of clever and varied levels, definitely worth the money.
Finally beat this game, after all these years. I've played through all the Souls games as they released, but have actually been finishing them in the most out of order way possible.
A silly fun time.
Mad style, mad fun
Enjoyed this entry quite a bit. Sadly one of the few fighting games I'm pretty good at is not that popular :(
Great fuckin' game!
Damn, this game gets brutal by the end. My wife and I managed to finish it though! If you really want a true test of your relationship, check it out ;)
Interesting mix of card game and SRPG.
Man, this game is great and very overlooked. Feels great to play and gets pretty challenging by the end.
A big jump from the first game in terms of level and boss design. I love the "slam the ground to get energy" mechanic, makes for some interesting gameplay. Loved the music as well. Fantastic game all around!
This game is an interesting bit of Suda51's output / gaming history, but as an adventure game, it was a bit of a struggle to get through. The pacing can be slow and there is a lot of repetitive dialogue that feels like it needed to be edited down. The core idea is interesting, but it takes a while to get there.
I liked all the mini-stories in this, honestly my biggest gripe is that there are a LOT of typos, really could have used another editing pass. One big plus is that there is a button just to smoke, which is a cool guy detective thing to do.
A decent little platformer from the early days of the DS. Nice to see Peach in a staring role :)
A delightfully weird game that has a lot of tricks up its sleeve.
I'm realizing I like the bite-sized Far Cry experiences more than the more bloated numbered entries.
Really cool Contra-esque game, honestly I just wish there were more bosses, I finished the game wanting more.
Just a fantastic remake and game in its own right. The 4th Survivor extra mode is killing me though, I just can't beat it!!!
Had a hankering to replay this game, still fun!
Decent little platformer with a nice art style.
What a weird spinoff game to make.
This is one of my new favorite games. Loved pretty much everything about it.
Interesting little choose-your-own-adventure game. Loved the style and characters, I wish there was more to the driving portion though.
I enjoyed this more than I thought. The gameplay was a little stale by the end, but all the trappings around the game are fantastic. I particularly enjoyed the weird visual novel interludes between each chapter.
My wife and I had a good time co-oping this together. It's a silly platformer with a neat art style.
Great game, wish it was longer though :(
The single player in this is surprisingly fun and surprisingly lengthy.
I appreciate Abby showing this off on the site, it's a cool puzzle game. Managed to beat every level :)
There's some really weird lore/story stuff that happens at the end of this game that I really appreciate. EDF! EDF!
The co-op campaign and secret third campaign in this game are really engaging and delightful.
Took me a few months to finish this, but totally worth it. Probably my favorite SMT game as of now.
Now I don't have to watch the movie!
This was a touching and effective little narrative game.
Probably the best levels in a Trials game, but I hated the XP progression system they shoehorned into this.
Excellent point-and-click game with an underwhelming ending.
Really cool story mode in this.
Super rad rhythm platformer. Wish it was longer though, I finished it in about 3 hours.
Excellent shmup with an excellent modern port by M2.
Loved it, except for the tailing missions.
Cool little DS game. Really liked the setting and characters a lot.
Fantastic, addictive game. Improves on the first game in pretty much every way. The simple combat might be my only complaint. Definitely one of my favorite games of the year! :)
Delightful and endearing, and gets a surprising amount of mileage out of its game mechanic.
Great game :)
Deceptively good Metroidvania/bullet hell game. Not my favorite aesthetic, but the gameplay is top-notch and every boss battle is thrilling.
Great remake of a really fun beat 'em up.
Funny and enjoyable.
Finally got around to beating this sequel. Don't like it as much as the first one, with the overly sprawling levels, but the soundtrack is aces.
Really enjoyed this experience, even more than Gone Home.
Fun little solitaire/RPG game.
Nice to see a LEGO game where they actually try to improve the gameplay. The combat in this one is much improved.
Interesting little minimalist platformer with horror undertones.
Delightful, endearing, very chill exploration game. Really enjoyed this!
Truly adored this game. Very compelling and well-written characters and narrative with some hard choices.
I think finally finished every possible thing in this game, been playing off and on all year. Easily my GOTY. Perhaps the best puzzle game I've ever played.
Love this game's art style - the world is very well realized and fleshed out. Combat is loose, but in a fun way. Really enjoyable game.
Finally got to play this legendarily stupid game. It was awesome.
Surprisingly good NES game that I had not heard of until recently.
This game was pretty alright.
Been on a real shmup kick this year.
I was morbidly curious about this remake, it's not good, it turns out. Art style is flat, voice acting is poor, and the remixed music is somehow worse.
Had a delightful time playing through this with my wife. Game is charming as heck, and does a good job towing the line of magical realism presented in the game.
One of Idea Factory/Compile Hearts' better JRPGs. Apparently they are making a sequel!
Very cool modern Turrican-like.
This game was one of my biggest surprises of the year. It might be one of the most pure video games I've ever played, where you are basically competing against your own organization skills. It's just very fun and chill and relaxing and taps into my personality in a deep way.
This is a surprisingly good visual novel with a very novel (hehe) mechanic I haven't seen before where you are rearranging snippets of stories to dramatically change the outcome.
A disturbing, delightfully macabre action platformer with some fantastic artistic design. It leans hard into religious imagery in an unsettling way that really surprised me. Just a fantastic game.
An okay detective romp.
This is a cute little fun co-op platformer, enjoyed playing it with the wife.
So glad this came to Switch, this game is fantastic. I 100%-ed it in just a few days, and loved every minute. Gorgeous art & music are used to tell a heartfelt story, but the game is surprisingly difficult at times.
This is a pretty decent top-down GTA clone, I ended up 100%-ed it, so must have been pretty decent, haha.
Great remake of the one Zelda I had never played before. Just a delight.
A marked improvement over the first game, I genuinely loved this one. The shift to being a Donkey Kong Country-like crossed with an inventive overworld structure really worked. And I love the mechanic we've seen lately in a few games where you can challenge the final boss from the start (a la Breath of the Wild). Can't wait to see the speedrun of this game where someone beats the wildly hard Impossible Lair section without taking a hit.
Didn't necessarily "beat" this, but I played a TON of it and finished about 2/3rds of the 30 or so episodes. Great game!
Don't really get all the hype about this one. It was fine, but the joke wore off pretty quick on me.
Really enjoyed the story being told here and most of the characters. Greg Chun puts in a great performance as Date (the main character), his second of the year, as he was also Yagami in Judgement. My only complaint might be a few too many lewd jokes, but it's minor.
Imported a copy of this for PS4, and it rules. It manages to capture the feel of piloting a mech really well. The mission design is great and really varied as well.
