"Non-modal" means the game only has a single gameplay "mode" where everything happens, like in Rogue.
A classic modal RPG would be Final Fantasy, where exploration and combat happens in separate "modes" with completely different interactions. Destiny is clearly modal, since it has several different gameplay modes with different gameplay rules - PvE, PvP, and non-combat social spaces for example.
Diablo would be a game descended from roguelikes, without a lot of people realizing it. It's basic gameplay loop is very similar to Angband.
I wonder when Ben will learn that sometimes you just have to bail on a level and run for the stairs. Monsters that multiply faster than you can kill them is certainly one of those moments, being blinded at the same time doubly so.
Heh, certain classic roguelikes like NetHack and the original DOS port of Angband would make "bones" files of your defeated characters and have them come back to haunt you as ghosts in subsequent playthroughs. I think you could potentially get some of their items back as well.
I expect the series is already done recording, but I just have to keep harping on using diagonal movement (on the numpad). That's how you get around corner without giving them a free hit.
Holy shit this dialog... I thought Bioware was supposed to be top tier. Maybe it's nostalgia talking, but I don't remember LucasArts' Star Wars games from the 90s being this ham handed.
You might need to allow Ben to do an extra run in an episode if he dies than 20-30 minutes in, because these games can be cruel and arbitrary at times - especially to a novice.
That said he was being lazy and sloppy here moving around while letting monsters get a bunch of free hits, so he kinda deserved it. Remember you can move and attack diagonally using the numpad.
I guess you're playing the "original" commercial release by Epyx, but the actual original release was a hobby project for university BSD mainframes "around 1980".
Anyway, as someone who played its descendant Angband a ton in my youth, I'm finding this feature fascinating.
@zombiepie: Sigh, BlackLagoon is hiding in shame having finally given up on the monthly Vita update. Would you belive Square Enix releases a game for it in November?
