Claude's Candy Corner: The Games We Play

When I think of candy, I think of chocolate. I was allergic as a kid but grew out of it. Now it's my flavor...flavour for that other crowd.

 Bountiful
 Bountiful

When I play video games, it reminds me of being a kid. I didn't have video games when I was real young. My family bought an Atari 2600 when I was 13.

I play video games.

 Finished:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: Wii

The best motion plus game on the market. I should say the best motion game on the market. But it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Certain aspects of the game left me scratching my head. A small gripe was the bug and item collecting. Why did I have to see the same cutscene when I already had more than one of the item after loading up the game from a previous save. The game is fat. Trim that fat Nintendo. The Spirit Realms works as far as gameplay, but was it needed? Hell no. I could have lived without four of those motherfuckers. At one point I had traveled far only to have to go back to a previous place and then come back to where I was only to be left with an escort mission. Really? Thanks for that assholes. Still, the game was cool. The time manipulation and the beetle were my favorites. I beat it, that's all that matters.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: Xbox 360

They got the vibe right that's for sure. The gameplay was even better. I have never played a game that went from first person to third person so seamlessly. The layout of the environments became like puzzles that needed to be solved. I did a lot of trial and error, but I'm a stealth guy looking for a different route in. The cutscenes were funky as hell though and the boss fights could suck my dick. But everything else was spectacular. If this isn't a game to grow on, I don't know video games. I want to see a new one and hope it's being made by the same developer. Good stuff. Thief 4 should be a hoot. I hope we see something at E3.

Still Playing:

Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City. The Ballad of Gay Tony: Xbox 360

I'm still playing this one. It's a lot different than Lost and Damned. The main character and the other characters aren't as tightly drawn as with Lost and Damned. But there's plenty of playtime to be played. I feel like Rockstar did this on purpose. I'm working on it. I did some base jumping but it wasn't what I was expecting and the game is still kind of hard. I die a lot, but learn and finally prevail.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters: Xbox 360 and bought the Wii version again.

I played the demo of TW13 on the Xbox 360. I think I'm going to skip this year's version. It will be the first version I've skipped in years. I don't have Kinect but fuck that shit, I can read and see that it's shit. I don't own a PS3, so I don't know about the Move version, but I frequent the EA forums and it doesn't seem better than the greatest of all the motion golf games...TW12 for the Wii.

Actually, I just bought the Wii version again. I bought it last year but hurt my shoulder and couldn't play it the way it was meant to be played, so I traded it in for the Xbox 360 version. By the way, the Xbox 360 version of TW12 is a great game. Analog control at its best.

Just bought:

Little King's Story: Wii

It's like an RPG Pikmin or something. There's no motion control, but there's a lot going on. You're a King, you upgrade your town, your recruit members for specific jobs, you go out on quests and hopefully rule the world. That last part is a guess. I'm about 10 hours in and it's a very unique game. Being like Pikmin, your group can get rather cumbersome at times and you lose them while on quests.  Interesting game, but I might have to put it down for a while. Because...

Xenoblade Chronicles: Wii

I'm getting this game this week. I can't wait. I've never played a real JRPG. Unless you count Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. But yeah, no Final Fantasy, no Square games no nothing. I'm scared and excited. I hope I like it.

Indie Game Corner: Ancient Trader: Xbox Live Indie

This is a turn based game. It plays somewhat like an economic, rock/paper/scissors card based combat sim. The artwork is awesome and the simple but sublime buy low sell high and military cards upgrade system becomes apparent quickly. There's a PC version, but I don't know much about that.

Initially I was prefering Gay Tony to Lost and Damned but now I just think they're both terrible at what they're trying to do. GTA 4 is still an amazing game as of 2012 (I played it a month ago), still 2nd on my favorite Rockstar games.

I don't know much about theif but it's always been the game Splinter Cell critics refered to as "the better stealth game". We'll see how THI4F pans out....

I've found that Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony to be superior to the original GTA IV. I had issues with that game. When I see Brucie in The Ballad of Gay Tony, I cringe. When I kidnapped that fucking dumb ass cousin Roman in Lost and Damned, I wish I could have shot his ass.

I feel like a lot of what defined Niko's story were those side characters that you just hated because they got you into nothing but trouble. That said, by the end of the game I grew fond of Roman. Yeah, he's an idiot, and most of the time you just want to punch him in the face, but he's family.

Lost and Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony I felt compliment each other really well. They're two sides to the coin that is GTA IV. Lost and Damned is all about characters moving the plot forward, while Gay Tony is just about being dragged into ridiculous situations.

@ReyGitano: Very nice reply, thanks. To me it was the city, Liberty City. I left it alone in 2008 and only came back to it this year. The city has stories. Those stories are worth every penny. I'm just glad I came back to play them out.

I'd say that those Spirit World/Shadow Realm (I forget what the hell they're called) were pretty necessary for the atmosphere and everything. What wasn't necessary was the end-game series of fetch quests. Those were pretty lame.

Xenoblade Chronicles is a wonderful game, but play with a classic controller Claude. You'll thank me.

Also it has wonderful English VO which is just so different to all the typical American (nolan cough north) VO it's whimsical.

I'm with you on Deus Ex, just beat it two nights ago. What a great game. Bosses were the pits but my grenade launcher/rocket launcher put them in their place.

I enjoyed Human Revolution. It didn't appear to have as much freedom as the older games, but I thought it was great. I found all the bosses were pretty easy (except one of them, because of something I did earlier in the game...I'll leave it at that). I ended up using steath most of the time, but I wasn't afraid to get my hands dirty once in a while.

I'd like to see another Deus Ex game at some point. There's definitely some life left in it.

@Video_Game_King: All I know is that the last 15 or so hours I was no longer having fun and just wanted to finish the game.

@Jazz: Good thing I got a classic controller then.

@TheSouthernDandy: Actually, now that I think about, the last boss wasn't that bad.

@AdzPearson: I did that same thing with that boss. Once I got to it I was like...D'oh! But yeah, more Deus Ex please.

@Ravenlight: You might have a point. I only used my stun gun on regular enemies. Live and learn.

You'll have to post your thoughts on Xenoblade. I'd have picked it up this week, but Amazon's running some smokin' good deals on games I've been interested in for a while, so I blew my fun money on that shit.

When I bought my Wii and a bunch of games a few months back that Little Kings Story game was one of the ones I was looking forward to the most. Still haven't gotten around to hooking up my Wii though. Its just been sitting in the box next to my TV. When I was about to set it up I remembered that the Wii uses AA batteries in the controller, and I really was not looking forward to the idea of needing to forage for batteries all the dam time to play my games so I left it in the box. Anyone recommend a good charger? Really not looking forward to needing to keep a bowl of batteries in my room just for my Wii. Got about 15 games to start in on some day. Pretty sure I will need a few batteries to play them all.

Looks like you have got a good variety of games on the go there. Been dying to play those GTA expansions for a long time, but Rockstar makes terrible PC ports of games and my PC doesn't run them that well. One day I will get to enjoy them. Lost and the Damned looks like the most fun. Dues Ex I bought during some Steam sale but just haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Hope you enjoy the rest. I hear they are nifty.

I'm trying to get into Deus Ex: HR again. Last time I played I had a backlog of other games and wasn't enjoying the stealth stuff so much. I hit the first boss fight and I just couldn't be bothered with it any more. I'm progressing now but I feel like I want to like the game a lot more than I actually do. The world is interesting, I'm just not so into the ways I end up interacting with it. I did really like GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony though, that's one of my favourite ever DLCs, even if the base jumping is kind of sucky.

@Sparky_Buzzsaw: I've had my eye on Xenoblade for a while. Everyone on these boards that played it in Europe and I guess the U.K. loved it.

@crusader8463: I don't know of any good chargers for the Wii. I just pick a bunch of AA batteries when I go to Lowe's hardware.

@Gamer_152: Yeah the boss fights in Deus Ex: HR are not fun at all. There's one boss you fight and it becomes really hard if you made a certain decision during the game. The Typhoon is your friend in these situations. I'm still poking around in Ballad of Gay Tony. I've slowed down with that game because of other games. I'll finish it one day.

I beat Deus Ex HR recently too and, yes, the bosses blow. I also gave up on a non lethal playthrough pretty early on and I think I had infinitely more fun not caring about achievements. Really liked it overall, though the ending sucked.

Also good for you for jumping into RPGs.

@Claude: Yeah I didn't ever feel frustrated with the bosses cause I knew what I was in for so I spec'd some armor upgrades and made sure to cart around a big gun for the whole damn game with ammo (which in itself got a little frustrating) but they just weren't fun. I'd imagine somebody going full stealth with just a pistol or whatever would be hating life when they hit bosses.

I've considered picking up a Wii again, solely to play Xenoblade and Last Story.

As for Tiger Woods games, I haven't touched any of them since 2010, and before that, I just couldn't get past 2004/2005 (arguably the height of the series). 2010 got a lot closer to the excellence of 2004/2005. Is 2012 anywhere closer to that, or are they still pretty distant from it?

I still haven't beaten Deus Ex...or Alice: Madness Returns...or Syndicate...or Alan Wake: American Nightmare...or Dark Souls...or Vanquish...or played much of SSX. Goddamn Old Republic has me by the fucking balls, man.

@jakob187: I love TW12. The analog control just feels right. I played the demo for TW13 and didn't like it as much as 12. As far as how does it compare to the great TW05, I haven't played that version in a long time. But I now own the Wii and Xbox 360 versions of TW12, so that should tell you something.

@Gamer_152: The first boss fight in Deus Ex HR is probably the worse just because you tend to not have a ton of upgrades or better gear at that point in the game. If you do enough exploring (be sure before returning to detroit you get the wall punch ability, there's tons of bonus loot in the sewers easily found with that ability) & hacking while at least trying to get headshots you will have more than enough points & gear by the time the 2nd boss rolls around you can just shoot some with the heavy machine gun along with maybe a shot of typhoon to make it a quick one.

I got about 60-70% of the way through Deus Ex and stopped playing. I loved the game so much for the first 10 hours but then I slowly started to tire of it. I think the problem was the story, to me at least, was really boring and I didn't like or care about any of the characters. The gameplay was fun, but when other games came out in the fall like Batman, I pushed it to the side. Now I will probably never finish it.

Thanks. I'll try and kit myself out properly for the second boss. With the first guy I eventually just decided "screw it" and looked up some YouTube videos of how other people were beating him, then I totally realised I could run around the room throwing toxic gas canisters and explosive barrels at him.
