I think a video game journalist should know how to play video games, not at a pro level, but have at least a basic understanding of the mechanics, but I can see the other point as well. There are people that are bad at certain genres. Yet they couldn't get somebody else at Polygon to maybe play that game right and redo the video? It's not exactly a small ragtag group of kids running on heart and ambition over there.
I disagree with most of the sentiments in the OP, especially the first point. I mean it's called Unprofessional Fridays. You should be expecting little to no preparation for something described as unprofessional. The only truly valid point I read was Dan's wrestling obsession, but the Venn diagram of Giant Bomb users and wrestling enthusiasts is horrifying. And every once in a while they get their facts wrong on a Quick Look or podcast, but at least I'm willing to look past that and look at other sites for clarity.
And to be honest, I don't have a subscription simply because I don't have the time to watch most of the content and a lack of interest in the current premium content so why waste the money. All I need from these guys is the podcasts and the rare Quick Look. That's about it for me. That shit is free and it's still great. Look, this site isn't for everyone and tastes change over time so if you don't like the product, don't subscribe or renew. It's not a big deal.
