Am I the Only One Who Isn't Feeling Street Fighter IV?

Mehdoken

Those knee-jerk responses I can almost hear in the future say "That's just because you suck at it." And, yeah I know. For the most part, I do suck at it. I'm not the best fighting game champ ever, and lord knows I have things like other games, friends, a job, and showers to take... so I don't have the most time in the world to dedicate to the fourth Street Fighter, although I kinda wish I do. The game is fun. I enjoy the none-to-overly-complex combos (though, honestly, still prefer the Smash Bros. method of combat input), and let's all admit the game looks great.

But why is the barrier for entry so fucking low?

I suck, yeah, but I should be able to play through Arcade mode on Easiest a few times, do some training mode to help learn my moves, and then use Trial mode to build up some combo knowledge... except that even on Easiest, the game is way to brutal. Zangief just will NOT stop pile-driving me! As far as Trial mode goes, trying to pull off Abel's level 3, 3rd combo just isn't working. Nothing in that game is telling me how to do it, it just tells me what to do. There's no instruction on when to time my shots, or anything. So after 100 or so tries to throw a heavy punch and follow it up with his sweet punch-combo (that I have down solid), I still can't seem to link the two. Any advice out there?

So, I'm not going to give a formal review. For one, nobody wants to hear from the guy who doesn't "know how to play," and I don't know near enough crazy shit about this game to give an in-depth opinion. All I can say is that I really, really wanted to get into this game, but it's refusal to stop destroying my face seems to be hindering that just a bit. Maybe I'll keep it around, play against people of my more relative skill level... Lord knows the online crowd is full of people who won't let off the "TIGER! TIGER! TIGER!" Also, why does every fucking person crouch? That's not how you fight. Stop crouching.

   /end rant

Anyway, sorry I haven't posted any reviews lately (mostly sorry to myself), but I've been spreading myself thin between games lately, especially on DS. Without going into review depth, let me just make the following DS recomendations: Moon, Final Fantasy IV, Big Bang Mini, and Dementium: the Ward. All fantastic games. I'll talk more in upcoming reviews sometime in the hopeful future.

-Make it a Good One.

I keep tricking myself into getting excited for this game.  Every time I do, I go download that trial of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix thinking I'll suddenly realize the amazing nature of the game, but then I play it and realize "oh wait...that's right...this game sucks".
What? You're trying to tell if you will like a game by playing a demo for a DIFFERENT game? That's like playing Resident Evil 2 to see if your going to like RE5. I have HDremix and I'm never going to play it again because SF4 blows it so far out of the water that it's over the horizon and off my radar.
"
I don't not like it because of the look and feel of the game.  I don't like it because of how it controls and the stupid quarter circle movements required for every last move.  From what I understand, it's the same as SF4.  Still though, the real game COULD be much better, but seeing as they don't have a demo for the game itself, I'll have to make due with the next most accurate thing.

I'm just pointing out the fallacies in his stupid ass comment.

Let's break it down to another medium then.
Why watch Heat when you can just go rob a bank?
Why watch Titanic when you can just sink a ship?
Why watch Evil Dead 2 when you can just chop your hand off and replace it with a chainsaw?
"
I would rather play the guitar then waste my time with rockband/guitar hero.

Your fallacy shit only works to an extent my friend.

MMA is awesome, I recommend it.

i just made my first attempt to beat the game on hardest and i did it with only 1 continue and that was on seth. everything up to taht was so easy to read. my balrog tore them all apart.

no i don't think the street fighter barrier to entry is high cuz i only just got into street fighter last year when it was announced. i played sf2 on the snes when i was a kind but that was it. something about street fighter 4 got me excited for fighting games. i bought a hori ex2, started playing hyper fighting on the xbox 360, got hd remix when it came out. i spent a long ass time reading about the game, learning the REAL mechanics. learning about cross-ups, tick throws, stamina ratings, linking, canceling, meaties, the theory behind area control, the theory of pressing the advantage, and all these other things that make street fighter the deep and compelling fighting game that it is. i've watched countless youtube videos of daigo, justin wong, alex vale, tons of other super turbo tournament level players and how THEY went about playing the game. i'm a huge fan of Darksydephil and his madness series of videos.

all these things led up to me having a better understanding of the game. its helped me so much, and i've barely even begun to play street fighter games. i've only really practiced them within the last several months.

so no. the barrier to entry is only as high as you want to make it. as in, if you don't care to learn it then you never will. i constantly hear on podcasts about these people who really don't know a damn thing about street fighter cuz they don't want to know a damn thing about street fighter. it kinda makes me sad that there aren't more people who care about this series. but whatever. i've loving it and i've only just begun to really sink my teeth into it.

Hey, I love MMA, but to deride the escapism of video games by "Why don't you do that in real life instead!?" is asinine.
Sorry, but I've gotten enough punches in the face from being a dick that I don't want to do it for fun.

I can't. I really do think this is one of the ugliest games out there today. Almost as bad as Guitar Hero III for horrible art style. And, while the IN-DE-STRUCTIBLE theme tune might be good the first time, the fact that it near enough the only music in the game really annoys me. I think it's one of the reasons why i'm not getting any better at the game because when I lose, particularly against Zangief and his infinite piledrivers, I don't particularly care about getting better.

I will gladly take your copy of the game off your hands. Hell I'll buy it from you if you sell it for less than $60.

Surprisingly so. I thought I'd have a hard time beating it since Zangief and Seth kept raping me on medium. But then I put it on hardest and played with Ken who hasn't been my main for years (Sakura ftw) and breezed through it without using any continues. That's 60 Achievement points right there baby!

So is Sakura like she was in the Alpha and vs. games? Does she have the running fireball and uppercut and all that? For some reason I've never seen her played in an online video.

No running fireball, but you can charge it which will make it bigger and do more damage, but shorten it's reach.
She still has a running Dragon Punch, but if you press two or three punch buttons at the same time she'll do a double Dragon Punch.
Her flying weak kick cancel almost anything people throw at it due to the speed.
Her Super and Ultra is a great even though you have to be up close.
Her hopping Hurricane kick is great against fireballs, but her jumping three hit punch(Shoryuken movement, but kick instead of punch, then punch three times) is even better. I love pulling that out against Sagat players who spam fireballs.
Her main detriment is being weak, so you gotta hit your opponent alot more. Then again, she is pretty fast so you can rack up the combos or just rapid fire strikes to chip away on your opponents health..

She's a nice variation after years of being a total Shoto whore. She's close, but different. I can't play as Ken online without feeling dirty nowadays.

Wow, its amazing to see how much of a hard time some of you are having with beating the game on Medium let alone Easiest.  I'm by no means one of the greats but playing through the challenges and training have helped my game A LOT.  One of my greatest achievements was beating the game on the Hardest setting within 45min.  Though it may not seem amazing to most, it was an achievement worth showing off to my friends who claimed to be SF badasses.  I'm up for some sparring if anyone is interested, just hit me up over XBL.

Yeh, the game is definitely brutal to newcomers.  I personally have not played a Street Fighter game steady since II: Champion Edition.  Even though I have played III several times in arcades, only the fact that I knew how 2-D fighting games basically worked helped ease my entry.  I just kept at it and found a character that suited me.  After I got relatively skilled with him, I tried out new fighters.  I'm having a lot of fun trying out new guys and basically rotating between Fei Long, Gen, and Abel in online play.

That sounds really good. I'm glad they did more to make her different because she's been basically the same for a decade. I hear everyone online plays Ken lol. I'll avoid that whenever I get the game.

I'm pretty bad at the game, can blast through arcade on easy then get annihilated fight after fight with seth. I've found that by  far the most fun I've had is playing local multiplayer with friends who are around the same level as me. Most of my friends, like me, played streetfighter II to death and haven't touched the series since. We would get owned by any serious player, but as we're all the same level passing the pads round for an hour or two is great fun, and the fact that none of us know a thing about cancelling or focus attacks doesn't matter in the slightest.
