My Favourite Album Is... [What's Yours?]

It's been a while since we had one of these (nearly 6 months - I searched) so I thought it fine to post this. Was thinking about music today because I'd detached myself from it a bit in the last few weeks (busy with other things). I was considering my favourite album. The Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" came to mind. Then left. "Discovery", Daft Punk came to mind. Left. So to did "Meat Is Murder" [The Smiths], "Wild Mood Swings" [The Cure], Parrallel Lines [Blondie], Wide Open Spaces [Dixie Chicks], Kala [MIA], Speak For Yourself [Imogen Heap], Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars [David Bowie].... All left. Many others came and went.

Final decision:

A classic from start to finish. Every single track.

As someone rightfully wrote in the YouTube comments: "if it were possible to have sex with a voice i would want it to be with hers..."

Pinkerton is a classic. It's super hit or miss with a lot of people that record. I prefer the "Blue Album" to be honest.

Should I have heard of the MerryMen or is that a joke post (feels all ignorant)?!

I'm curious if anyones going to pick Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. That album's great but... I dunno... I find myself wanting to skip in places which, you know, isn't good material for a best ever album.

I have several that could legitimately be called my favorite albums.  It's pretty contingent on my mood.

Queens of the Stone Age -- Songs for the Deaf
Radiohead -- OK Computer
Godspeed You! Black Emperor -- Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Incubus -- Morning View
The Who -- Who's Next

God, now that I think of it, though, I could easily add a Rush album (or two) and a few others to that list.

I may be able to crank out a top ten, but I'm far too fickle to decide on a definitive favorite.

I must have listened to this album hundreds of times from start to finish since it came out back in 2003 and i'm not even the kind of person who listens to albums from start to finish but it really is breathtaking. Every track is just perfect.

There is no question.
There is no question.

Easily this. I can relate to it, every song is a display of compositional and instrumental talent, and the final song is probably the best song since rock n' roll was born.

In no particular order

Operation Ivy - Energy (soo many songs on that album and they are all amazing.)
NOFX - So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes (good mix of SKA/Punk)
Rise Against - The Unraveling (Punk-as-fuck)
Descendents - Two Things at Once (2 classic albums in one)
Autopilot Off - Make a Sound (their last and best album)

I dont have one favorite because if i did, i would sound like a punk rock elitist.

Pet Sounds is another one. I like all of it, but some of the songs can be labeled filler. Still, a great album that is. I also forgot Who's Next and Murmur. Those are two other exceptional albums.

While technically not my favorite, this was the album that got me to expand my music taste beyond classic rock and mainstream radio stuff at the time. Therefore, it deserves my appreciation. Another honorable mention is Blood Mountain for piquing my interests in metal.

You never forget your first.

My first, broke my eyes open like cheap glass wear against the host's fork.  I was a teen when this album hit the stands.  Saw the video a short while after. Remember my older brother and his friends watching it on TV.  Me just sitting wide eyed and mouth gaping, back against the wood paneled far wall.  Them doing their usual weekend haze, and I couldn't understand what that noise was.  Hypnotized.

This album taught me about music.  Didn't pay attention to anything on the radio till Nirvana.  The album hit my ears like acid dripping down the back of my brain.  Psilocybin goo short circuiting.

After this it was all Pearl Jam, RHCP, Green Day, Punk, Grunge and anything with streaming guitar rifts, noisy lyrics and ear thumping bass. It's sucks to think about, what music is today.  Hip Hop isn't all bad, but damn where did all those guys go?  That the change they voted for?

Guess it really was better to burn out, instead to fading away.

Man, this is a borderline impossible answer, at least I've managed to narrow it down to two bands.

First there's Strung Out, which after well over a decade is still my favorite band. Their lyrics, wether written by Jim Cherry or Jason Cruz really speak to me.
Jordan Burns is the best drummer in punk today if you ask me with his innovative and exciting transitions as well as his thumping beats and Jake and Rob shred on guitars. I feel bad not singling out Chris Aiken, but alas the bassist almost never gets the spotlight.

Blackhawks Over Los Angeles

These are their five best albums in my opinion and I can't decide which one of them I'd consider the best.

But another artist who speaks to my heart is Mark Oliver Everett. More commonly known as E or The Eels.
His lyrics and arrangements are beautiful and he's even more eclectic than Tom Waits (Another artist I love) in how different his music can be.

You should be pleased. Being underground or alternative or whatever the trying-too-hard-to-be-cool kids call it these days isn't really worth it. My friend strives for it and it's so pathetic.

I'll play...the five that constantly rotate.

From left to right.

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights: Its too bad this band hasnt come close to matching this album. Lyrically average but musically impressive.
Track Suggestion: Leif Erikson, The New, PDA, Untitled.

Agalloch - The Mantle: A metal band that has admitted to being more influenced by Godspeed You! Black Emperor than any metal band. Post Rock for those of us with a metal persuasion and a perfect entry for anyone whos interested in jumping into the genre.
Track Suggestion: The Celebration for the Death of Man..., And The Great Cold Death of the Earth, A Desolation Song.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea: What can be said that hasnt already been said...The best album of the 90s.(Yes even better than OK Computer)
Track Suggestion: Holland, 1945. Oh Comely, The Two Headed Boy Pt. 2., In The Aeroplane Over the Sea,

The Beatles - Abbey Road: The last Beatles album...to think amid the toil and arguments George Martin got the band focused and in the process they recorded a masterpiece. The second half is absolutly unmatched.
Track Suggestion: Something, Here Comes The Sun "The Medley"  You Never Give Me Your Money, Sun King, Mean Mister Mustard, Polythene Pam, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, The End.

Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun: Their second album but first with the sound that made them famous. Much like Bjork the music couldnt come from anywhere but Iceland. Majestic, and triumphant. ( ) often gets credited as their best but IMO this album is teir most consistant.
Track Suggestion: Ny Batteri, Vidar Vel Til Loftarasa, Svefn G Englar, Olsen Olsen, Staralfur(The song my wife walked down the aisle to)

If you like any of the single tracks please listen to these entire albums...its impossible to pick the best song on any of these. Also alot of great choices in here.
