I Promise This Isn't All About Modern Warfare 2

Seriously, it's not.  I will make my thoughts on the game short and brief, then move on.

Modern Warfare 2 feels like an expansion pack for CoD4.  That's not to say it's bad, but it's not the second coming of Christ.  It's just a good game, plain and simple.  Was it overhyped?  Fucking duh.  Did it deserve at least some hype?  Yeah, it's Call of Duty.  Am I happy about the PC version?  Nope.  Do people care?  Nope.  Nonetheless, I'm playing on 360.  I'm up to rank 40 and I don't see any end in sight at the moment.  Hopefully, it doesn't consume me like CoD4 did.

Moving on from the popular (and overtalked topic) of Modern Warfare 2:

At least one of last year's GOTY faves is still going strong this year.
At least one of last year's GOTY faves is still going strong this year.
2009 is almost over, which means we're going to start seeing some GOTY talk coming up.  This is always an exciting time of year for me in gaming, as I get to see what other people thought were killer games that deserve the highest of all praise possible.  Unfortunately, one of the issues I've always had is that many people forget about everything that came out before September.  While last year didn't necessarily see that same thing happen (at least, not at Giant Bomb), I feel like that statement might change for this year.  With games like Modern Warfare 2, Borderlands, New Super Mario Bros, etc. being released this month alone...as well as returns from Assassin's Creed and other big franchises, it seems like the playing field for the first half of the year has long been forgotten.

Seriously, can you remember any memorable games from early in the year?  I can, but can you?  Here's a small list:
  • Street Fighter IV - It's a terrific game, but given that it's a fighting game, does that mean it will really be considered a contender for GOTY material?
  • Prototype - Fantastic game with some stiff difficulty and massive carnage, but the "competition" (namely Infamous) seemed to get more attention and better reviews
  • Red Faction Guerrilla - Badass game with some of the best multiplayer of the year, but it's not MW2 or ODST, so will people consider it?
  • The Maw/'Splosion Man - I'm sure these might get SOME form of recognition, but with Shadow Complex being the "cool" game, will Twisted Pixel get ignored?
  • Killzone 2 - Lot of people loved the game, but how much do you hear people talking about it NOW?
  • Dawn of War 2 - This game offered a unique take on the RTS genre, but will people remember it?
  • Punch-Out! - Remember when the only thing people could talk about was Punch-Out!?  That didn't last very long.  Does it mean it's not GOTY material?

As you can see, these are all games that were hotly talked about, but the latter half of the year saw MASSIVE releases that seem like they've overshadowed a ton of GREAT games.  Hopefully, we'll see a good spread over the course of this GOTY period and it won't just be focused on the same four games over and over.

Until next time, piece.

Street Fighter 4 most definitely not for GOTY. No fighting game can contend with the powerhouses of the 2009 scene. Prototype as you said was beaten to death by inFamous. Red Faction came and went without much recognition. KillZone2 being PS3 only, no way.

DoW2 being a PC RTS I'd eat my goddamn hat if it was GOTY.

I'm gonna vote the contenders being....(Mostly as you said)

Fallout 3 + DLC
Dragon Age Origins (Not much of a shot due to it's difficulty for the casual player)
Modern Warfare 2 (Will move the most copies of a game this year)

Anyways, sweet blog. Happy Gaming.

I've had a pretty good year with video games. Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii was awesome and Wii Sports Resort is a favorite in my house. I played some old games from the Xbox 360 library and had a blast, PC got some love with some older games as well. This holiday should be just like last year. A shit load of video games "four or five" to play in January.

I thought Resident Evil 5 was pretty damn good, though obviously not as groundbreaking as RE4 was. I don't see it winning any awards but it's been one of my favorites this year.

Resident Evil 5 WAS this year, wasn't it?!  Shows how much I cared about that game in the first place, but yes, that was another highly acclaimed game.

@IceColdGamer: I think it's sad that RFG seemed to get little recognition, as that game is beyond solid.  It's done nothing but gotten better over the course of the year as well, and the multiplayer community is excellent on that game.  The single player was a little lacking, but it was still fun and felt very alive.

Batman is still pretty recent in people's minds, though.  Chinatown Wars might get some added oomph because of the PSP release, but from what I'm to understand, the DS version is still superior to it.  Nice job bringing up Chinatown Wars, though, as I forgot about that as well.

You mentioned Infamous, although really listed Prototype. I don't think Prototype will be winning any GOTY awards since while the game was fun, it definitely had some issues.

There aren't many issues in that game, and too many people bitched about the difficulty of the game.  Prototype was a great game with some good replay value to it, but I really do feel that being released alongside Infamous hurt the game's chances.

Oh, absolutely.  I'm not trying to say that Infamous wasn't great as well, but again, I think that the nearly simultaneous release of Infamous and Prototype really hurt Prototype's chances as being viewed independently.  Infamous was a much better game in my opinion, but I'm pretty sure we all know that.

Eh, there were the basic things like bad textures, pop-ins, poor character models (besides Alex), boss fights with no real strategy to them, bosses which had really cheap moves  so you would have to sink to their level and be cheap as well, and a lackluster story. I think those disqualify it for a GOTY award, at least in my opinion.

I think Uncharted 2 gets my vote for now. (haven't played MW2 yet, may or may not)

To be fair though I've played it the most recently and my memories of  other good games of the year (Batman, Infamous) are quickly fading.

Somehow I feel Uncharted 2 is already game of the year. And I've never even played it, nor did I like the first one very much.

Batman: Arkham Asylum would be my personal choice for GOTY.

Most of those games you mention will probably show up in some narrower lists, like genre specific or whatever. 2009 was a very good year for gaming, so a complete GOTY list would be like 25 games long.

I can only agree with one of those statements, and here is a bullet list as to why:
  • Bad textures compared to the amount of massive carnage and chaos happening on-screen?  I'll take the poor textures.
  • Pop-in?  Gears of War and many other UE3-based games regularly appear on GOTY lists, and their pop-in is WAY worse.  Also, the carnage and chaos on-screen makes this something I can forgive.
  • Poor character models?  Eh, I thought the character models worked for what was presented.  Could they have been better?  Sure, but I wouldn't say they are poor.
  • Boss fights may have no real strategy, but they definitely test your skills of survival...which I personally prefer over scripted encounters.
  • Bosses with cheap moves?  No, Ninja Gaiden features cheap moves.  Prototype simply offered brute force that people were not used to handling in a game as of late.  I found every fight to be a challenge, and yes, it was infuriating fighting against them all sometimes...but when I finally beat them, it felt like a massive victory (especially the last boss.
  • Lackluster story?  This isn't MGS.  The story that was present felt plenty fleshed out for what was present.  There were cutscenes, in-game moments, and even additional info from the collectibles...not to mention audio logs, videos, etc.  The story was definitely there, but it wasn't going to be handed to people on a platter.  If you care enough about the game, then the story is there for you.  If not, then you can at least run around town and destroy tons of shit.

No, WaW was more of a mod, since it was made by a different group of people. :P

Yeah, I've been thinking as to what I would place under my top 10 list, but I'd probably need to do a bit of research to get an accurate list. I'd agree with Street Fighter IV being in the top 10, but I feel a little silly putting that game on the list knowing that a superior version is coming. BlazBlue was pretty well received (although not as much on this site). Batman: Arkham Asylum and the GTA IV DLC expansions will probably be on top 10 lists. Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, and Modern Warfare 2 will probably be on my list.

At first I thought Uncharted 2 had GOTY on lockdown, but then I imported Demon's Souls and was totally blown away. Not only is this my undisputable GOTY, it's also the best game I have played this generation and subsequently the best game I have played in the last 5 years. It has been a long long time since I have felt so strongly about a game. I finished it in a solid 40 hours, but an even stranger thing happened afterwards - I wanted more. I quickly started new game+ and am now playing it nearly religiously to get the platinum trophy and max out my gear. The game doesn't even have a good story and the graphics are not exactly the best on PS3, but i'm still there because of a core aspect we often forget about: gameplay.

I'm not doing it for an overblown narrative, interesting characters or any of that crap. I'm playing it just because it's so fun. Innovative, is what it practically is, innovative for going back to the roots of gaming, for punishing us, for making us repeat levels over and over again until we master them. Compare this to the auto-aiming in MW2, or the rewind feature in Forza 3 - Demon's Souls shits on it, tells it to fuck off and carries on living like the 80s golden age of difficulty never ended. And factor in some truly immersive online that not only acts as its own strategy guide, but pretty much gives the game several thousand 'free' NPCs in the process, as well as traditional co-op and PvP, and you have a sure fire winner. It has all the bases covered.

Even grinding levels and collecting items is fun in this game - what more needs to be said there? It's too awesome for words, and i'm betting i'll be as addicted on my 3rd, 4th, even 5th playthroughs.

"
Ah, I love a good debate... Ok:

  • I'll admit the normal character models weren't awful. but when I see four of the EXACT SAME people running together, then it really just takes me out of the game. It's just not something you would see in a GOTY game.
  • Yes Gears of War does have really bad pop-in, but that's textures. I remember gliding through the city and seeing buildings just appear out of nowhere. I feel Gears of Wars texture pop-in was only a minor problem due to how great the textures looked in the game. I believe Prototype had these issues because a lot of things were happening and the developers sacrificed textures and pop-ins for a smoother frame rate which is completely understandable.
  • I see what you are getting at in that the bosses were more difficult than other, perhaps more casual games,  but it just really annoys me that in order to beat the boss you have to hammer on the attack button for 2 seconds before the boss does some inescapable move that drains a third of your health. Most of the time it doesn't even matter where you hit the boss, it's just a matter of slowly whittling away it's health while not throwing the controller in frustration.
  • Ninja Gaiden does have Bosses with incredibly cheap moves, but I also believe Prototype had bosses with cheap moves as well (although perhaps not to the extent of Ninja Gaiden). If you were attacking the boss, it would take the boss around a second or two to pull off some move that would take out a lot of your health and break you out of whatever combo you were in. They wouldn't react to your attacks (in fact the only way I could tell I was doing damage was the health bar) and instantly be able to counter anything you threw at them. Because of this, I had to do the basic strategy of run up a building, do the dive bomb attack, lose 3/4 of my health, run back up the building, wait for health to regenerate, and repeat. This not only wasn't fun, but made me feel as though I was sort've cheating since I was just doing the same thing the boss was doing to me, which isn't how I like to play.

Now, I want to clarify that I don't think Prototype is a bad game by any means. But I personally just don't think it really deserves a GOTY nomination due to the amount of issues it has. There are many excellent elements of the game, and i did enjoy it overall, it's just those problems kept it from being the blockbuster hit I was hoping it would be. I'm also glad that this is an actual debate and not a flame war like so many threads on the internet turn into.

I did read it.  I reread it now and realized that, buried deep in the body of it, you mention 'games before September'.  Excuse me all to hell for forgetting that when I wrote 'Uncharted 2', you sarcastic douche.  I like how your profile image is pretty much just a "fuck You" image...  It's very appropriate.  Please keep the profile image.  I'll try to avoid posts of someone giving me the finger.

@Fullmetal216: I can't really say that I experienced any of the stuff in your third bullet point, but then again, maybe we were playing the game differently.  I was experimenting with all the different weapons, playing around with the bosses to find efficient ways of killing them quickly.  The thing I liked the most is that they weren't scripted encounters of "okay, jump over that move, now dodge this, now use this on the glowing spot to hurt them badly...lather, rinse, repeat".  I get so tired of that formula.  I understand why it is there and all, and it's effective most of the time.  However, I liked that Prototype just offered difficult bosses, period.  It's also one of the only things I personally like about Ninja Gaiden - difficulty.  =  /

As for the pop-in, I understand what you means now.  I will say that you are correct on that.  There's no reason why they couldn't have a fully rendered city at all times.  Nonetheless, I was willing to sacrifice that pop-in issue in order to have some extra detail and a city that felt alive...and that city seriously felt alive!  I mean, name me another game that ever has that many cars on the streets in New York!!!  NO ONE puts that into NYC-based games, and that meant a lot to me.  There are some really great things about the city that I was okay with them skimping a bit in the area of not having everything fully fleshed out and instead putting up some fog.  Then there are the people, and as you mentioned, you saw four of the exact same person running together.  In the scope of "thousands of somewhat similar looking people crowding the streets vs. hundreds of different looking people crowding less of the streets", I pick the former.  This is a massive amount of shit hitting the fan, and having the streets flooded in panic felt great.

Really, that is the one thing that does hold Prototype down for me:  sacrifice.  I would've hated being in the meetings where they had to say "so, which do we sacrifice?".  I'm sure it was difficult trying to make this vision come to full life, but I think they did a superb job of it.  There are many games with technical issues that get considered for GOTY awards each year, so I don't see why an exceptionally good game like Prototype shouldn't be considered for some.

Thank you for reading the blog.  Really, it means a lot. "
My avatar has been around since I was on GameSpot.  It's a version of the Viewtiful Joe "peace" avatar that was going around for a while, and I mainly use it because it's a comical contrast to me.  Joe is very much a "fuck yeah, henshin-a-go-go, let's rock and kick ass" type of character that pretty much wouldn't flip anyone off.

Yes, I am a sarcastic asshole...as many people here know.  I'm sorry that you aren't accustomed to it, and I'm sorry for taking the tone I did on my comment.  I've had a lot of people that jump into my blogs, don't read them, and then just skim it and comment.  I like my blogs to be a general discussion about the entire blog and not just a "I skimmed it, saw this thing, and now I'm commenting".  Worthwhile discussion is something I encourage greatly, even if I may not always of

So, in turn, consider this my formal apology.  I use sarcasm a lot, so I'm sorry if it happened to offend you.  I figured you just saw "GOTY" and went straight for a default answer.  I now see that this is not the case, and I would appreciate any other form of worthwhile commentary you are offering.

No, none of this is sarcasm.  This is genuine...as well as a rare time that you'll find me apologize.

Also...I haven't gotten to play Uncharted 2 yet, but I have it on authority from many friends that the game doesn't suck at all.  However, they also know my hatred for cutscenes in video games, so they've suggested that I will probably like the game less than most people because of that.

I can see Beatles: Rock Band getting a lot of recognition as well when the GOTY awards start rolling in.

Not before September either, BUT I don't want more trouble...so I'll play nice.

I will say that as much as I hate The Beatles, I thoroughly enjoyed the HELL out of that game.  I don't know why, either.  I plan on S-ranking that game eventually.

Also, your avatar is so win!  However, where's the Gears of War Lancer?  LAWL

That's where my arguments seem to always lead!  LAWL  I totally understand your points, and I believe that yes...they will prevent people from popping it onto their GOTY lists.  As a former game reviewer, I had to look at the idea of sacrifice in a lot of games that I reviewed to get to the root of it all.  Generally, though, Prototype was just flat-out fun to me.  The best part was that when it got super frustrating, I could go take it out on all kinds of shit elsewhere in the city.

@jakob187: Yeah, there were many moments in that game that just made me smile... Like surfing on an enemies body and then kicking it into a tank in critical condition causing it to explode... Good times...

Haven't gotten to play that either.  REALLY REALLY REALLY considering buying a PS3 just for that game...because I just don't feel like Sony and Level 5 are EVER going to utter the words "Dark Cloud 3" during this generation...which saddens the FUCK out of me.  =  (

Oh, hell yes!  Don't forget dragging someone up a skyscraper, then repeatedly powerbombing them until you hit the ground, then continually powerbombing them on the ground to wipe out zombies until you powerbomb them onto a tank, then grabbing that tank in a swift parkour move, flinging it at another tank, then ending with a big devastator and shouting out loud "I AM A FUCKING GOD!!!".

.........like I said, I REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY enjoyed that game.

Yeah, but all the good games before September have all probably been mentioned by now. The most notable one is probably Street Fighter IV. BlazBlue did get some fans too. Oh, and I completely forgot about the Xbox Summer of Arcade games. Shadow Complex was the pretty cool (Marvel vs Capcom 2 was great too, but it seems unfair to count it).

Flower might not be everyone's cup of tea but it was released early in the year.  And Noby Noby Boy is nothing if not memorable as a downloadable game.  One of the best games I played this year, albeit a remake, was the DS title Dragon Quest V, also a 2009 release.  I'm still hooked on the Sims 3 whenever I feel like just doing something stress free and fun. Other people have mentioned other games so I don't need to rehash their suggestions, but needless to say that there have been some good offerings dropped in our laps before the holiday onslaught began.

@PenguinDust: I totally forgot about DQ as well.  Sims 3 is another one, especially given that it's such a popular franchise.  However, I think we all know that The Sims just kind of exists, LOL!

Let's hope not.  I might as well have just quit everything and gone on another "Tiger Woods 2004" streak.

Didn't mean it was at all a bad game.  It was an incredible game, and still is.  Unfortunately, the RTS crowd is too hooked on that franchise being about base building...and it's still a fresh enough franchise that you don't NEED base building.  Besides, in the scheme of things, is the tabletop game focused around units built or buildings built?  There ya go, point made.  lol

I just beat Modern Warfare 2 and really enjoyed it. It is definitely either #2 or #3 for me overall for the year, even if I felt the story was all over the place (though it kept me pretty gripped) and I still don't like that particular airport sequence. Yeah it was more of the same but, really, when that core formula is sooo good, not much change is necessary. I thought the "All Ghillied Up" mission in this game (there was basically one down to the nail) was better than the COD4 one, Overall, it was like COD4...but better. I don't regret dropping $60 on it, and I haven't even touched the multiplayer yet!!

Uncharted 2 is my number one for the year for many, many reasons which I won't disclose all now. However, I have a number of games from earlier in the year that are among my favorites: Battlefield 1943 was one of the biggest time-wasters for me over the summer. I spent a lot of time on it and really enjoyed competitive multiplayer again, something that is rare for me. Shadow Complex and 'Splosion Man were also a lot of fun; Killzone 2 and SFIV...not so much. I am not a big fighting game fan and I didn't find the controls or action in Killzone 2 that great. Still though, there were a lot of good games in 2009, beginning and end.

I know for sure GOTY will be some sort of shooter and I'm in no interest in anything that involve moving, aiming, shooting
kinda makes me sad for still following gaming news since majority of topic are for those games

Good topic, i think alot of the games you mentioned are going to get swallowed by the Modern Warfare 2 hype. Even stuff like Batman Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 (which i know came out later than September) will probably not get a good look in for Goty for most sites simply because MW2 came out and got a ton of attention. Also on GB i think its pretty much a foregone conclusion that MW2 is going to get GOTY, as much as my choice is Uncharted 2 i cannot see that being the case in a lot of places. Hopefully i am wrong though.
