Just examples from this thread, and the some. Sf4, Forza Horizon, Fallout 3, Skyrim, WoW with every iteration, XCOM, etc etc. They'll keep doing it because keeping a game niche doesn't make enough money in most cases.

I agree with Renazhor.

Appealing to a broader audience isn't a bad thing either, it does bring down or even straight out remove more of the things that niche audiences enjoy in favor of what the vaster audience likes but the quality of the content that they have added or kept from their past roots has always improved or at the least, remained the same.

Examples are the combat in ME 2, The Elder Scrolls, and XCOM. While improving the combat of these 3 games, they all lost things that past "fans" of the series liked such as the number of units you used in XCOM or the combat directly in The Elder Scrolls (While I personally prefer the more actiony combat, I can somewhat see why others like the more "dice-rolly" combat of Morrowind).

On the other hand, there have been games that didn't work so well with a push for more of a mass appeal such as Resident Evil but that's hardly the majority.

And yes, we'll probably keep seeing developers keep doing it because it makes the most money.

I don't remember what it was called but there is a level in Call of Duty 2 that starts out with you as the British being immediately ambushed and you're caught out literally in the open.

I don't really remember it being bad in normal or whatever the third difficulty was called but on Veteran it was pretty ridiculous as you could hardly play for 10 seconds without being killed.

I made the right decision to get Tactics Ogre over FFT then, I'm going to pick up FFT today.

Vanguard Bandits or Front Mission 3 - Both of these games have 2 main branches of story, I thought that feature was awesome when I played them when they were more relevant but I never really knew just how awesome they were until I was in the more present where things like "killing a enemy commander who happened to also be a main character if you were playing a different branch" don't really exist anymore or at least are much less prevalent

Return to Castle Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory - I played a few shooters online before ET but ET probably to this day remains one of my favorite, it still defines what I really enjoy in shooters which unfortunately largely don't match what is popular which is to say :

-Multi-tiered objectives with multiple ways to complete them

-Class system with classes that don't involve shooting, but can still shoot

-Ranking up systems that could reset (depending on server specifications) but also were tied into the equipment or skills you could use

-Large battles

The closest comparison I can think of is Nautral Selection but I never really looked into that.

The Elder Scrolls 3 : Morrowind - At first I hated this game actually and regretted buying it, but then after I looked at the back of the box the words "live another life" really got me gripped somehow so I gave it another shot and when I approached it from that perspective I discovered that I really liked it. I got around the basically really dull combat system and instead loved exploring the world, and yes, living my own unique life in it. It's also one of the few games that let me store things in a house.

World of Warcraft - I played Everquest but never really got into it, WoW on the other hand was much easier to get into since I really liked WC3 and when I saw the trailer for WoW I was immediately hooked. WoW was also the game that sort of made me look into the more "social" aspects of gaming not only in gaming but in the gaming industry in general.

they are doing a great job of keeping it fun sans the respec trainers. they need to go back to the original way and let us respec anywhere in the world out of combat. that is fun.

Without that sense of permanence, you end up with Diablo 3: the lack of permanence and investment only making the experience feel less personal in favour of flexible.

It's arguable in the end. I personally like having restrictions on respecing because it makes you think twice before you want to experiment with something. Of course, removing that to have more room to experiment could also be a good thing.

After having so much fun this weekend (somehow even more than last time), I'm suffering from some serious GW2 withdrawal. I'll bet that others are having the same problem.

To fill the hole, I think I'll be playing "get off your ass and find a new job" along with a smattering of iPad/DS games and Assassins Creed 2-3 in prep for 3 later this year.

What will you be doing between now and the next beta?

I'm playing the new job game too, after getting rejected out of the army due to having eczema, I decided I wanted to try and see if video game streaming can be a job which I just started working on a week ago, and now since I've decided to take it more seriously I'm trying to advertise somehow.

@JerichoBlyth: I agree with this in a way. I personally really liked Space Marine but I rented it and I also really like the Warhammer 40k universe. I think the second part might be one of the larger appeals for it though as if you really like being in the 40k universe and playing as a Space Marine doing the Space Marine "thing" of being a "badass" and a super soldier, you'd probably really like Space Marine since that's pretty much what the entire game is about.

When I started to get turned off from it I almost imagined it similar to Black Hawk Down except less controversial and it became way fun again.

As for my response to the post however, the most boring game I've played "recently" honestly is Diablo 3. It's a great game that started off fun, but as someone who doesn't play more than like 3 different games every 2 or 3 months, it came down to that Diablo 3 is the least fun of the others that I've played. Although it's still fun to go back into it and level alts or play on a hardcore character to try to progress further in that though. It just doesn't have a long lasting appeal that I'm lacking in PC games in general right now, I'm hoping Guild Wars 2 will fix that.

I don't have enough money for DLC to be considered or not to begin with.
