#NotRightForAlyssa

Is there anything that spreads hate, fear, and lies like the Internet? (Insert your Fox News / Huffington Post jokes here).

I’m just amazed at the number of people who are upset at Alyssa Bereznak. The way people are treating her is just wrong. Yes, she was wrong to write a blog about her date, but is #NotRightForAlyssa the appropriate response?

We all have our preferences for dating someone be it: blondes, brunettes, redheads, old, young, smart, dumb, thin, fat, conservative, liberal, religious, completion or whole host of other characteristics. Not dating someone because they play Magic is just as inane as not dating someone because they wear glasses. She is still a human being, and the way some people on the Internet are treating her is just abhorrent. What ever happened to treating people the way you want to be treated?

The fact that she can be so prejudiced against a nerd when she writes articles for a popular GADGET site... doesn't really frighten me but it does piss me off. As overused as this phrase is, it's the pot calling the kettle black.

Seriously, has no one noticed this fucking hypocrisy?

EDIT: Also, I've never seen a picture of her. Why is she ugly? Overweight? Wrinkly? Bland?

She knows she's the away team in that game, right?

@Branthog: God knows I have fantasies regarding encountering a woman with "Speak 'Friend' And Enter" tattoed in elvish on her lower belly. On a more serious note, mind; you're unfortunately right. In one deft blow to another's character, she's established for herself a reknown that's not likely to be easily forgotten. And the fact that we are even discussing this on a gaming-site only goes to prove how wide-spread the matter is. The truly tragic thing, in my opinion, isn't that some man's reputation was slandered, despite the fact that he seemed like a nice guy, and treated her fairly; what's truly disturbing is that her post racked up as many views as it did.

Naturally, the internet is in an uproar, screaming for her blood, her sweat, and her head on a platter; but I feel this to be a very expected reaction, rather than an honest one. Most of the people who went to that site enjoyed the article, I've no doubt. Hell, the editors approved it before it was posted and they'd certainly already considered the fact that this could be considered a court-case of slander. They understand that their readers want this sort of thing, as it makes them feel empowered to know that another person can be so easily brought down. The woman's a bitch, no doubt about it. But what's it say about all the people who came to read her articles and enjoyed it?

I just hope that she won't be setting an example that others will follow, which at the moment is a danger that just might come to pass, seeing how much screen-time she's getting. I fear for an overload of teenagers and want-to-be celebrities popping up and taking their frustrations out by publicly humiliating others in the hopes that it'll garner them a fragment of the same attention she's recieving. Very much like in the old Papal state, all you need is a pretense.

Of course she deserves the hate she's getting. Unlike the guy she is naming and shaming permanently on the internet in front of millions of people for *gasp* having a past-time that she's uptight and judgmental about, she actually did something very low and hurtful. How would you feel if someone tore you apart for absolutely no meaningful reason on a site with traffic in the tens of millions?

The guy spent his time taking her out, paid for the date, was otherwise a decent and seemingly nice person except for enjoying a game she was a prig about and he's rewarded by being treated like something short of a child molester in some internet chick's blog. Because he's a huge nerd, apparently. (Because blogging for a tech site and searching the internet for dates is totally not nerdy, I guess?).

Man, I have dated some really awful women in my life time. Not just women who were annoying or vain or had little things I didn't like about them. Actual awful human beings. And yet, I have the decency not to air their dirt forever on the internet for a few hits. Even the worst of them don't deserve to be torn to bits online like that. In fact, I suspect that if the sexes were reversed here, people would be calling the guy out for being some sort of misogynist or committing a "hate crime" for treating some poor woman like that on the internet, who was so kind as to let him take her out and pay for her night at dinner and a show.

And now, we're calling people out for calling someone out for - in addition to genera shitty website linkbait content - being a pretty awful human being? It's deserved. It's fair. The only unfortunate thing is that the response to it isn't going to result in anyone thinking twice about being such complete asshole in public, but is instead going to serve as an example of getting lots of traffic next time someone wants to bait an audience (I never go to gizmodo or any of their family of shitty sites, so it clearly worked). Even worse, this person is likely to be rewarded for being a pretty loathsome human being by getting a job out of their infamous internet celebrity generated at that dude's expense.

I mean, really, an internet blogger for a gadget site who finds her dates on the internet judging someone for playing Magic: The Gathering is like me (a fairly avid video gamer) judging a girl because she has an LOTR tattoo. Don't nerds and geeks have enough shit to deal with from the rest of the world without treating each other like shit? God damn.

Yup. She nerd-baited everyone pretty hard and she's laughing all the way to the bank, since Gawker writers get paid for hits.
Is she even getting paid? She's an intern.
Was she interning? A Forbes article I read claims that she was a freelancer. I mean, US law says that interns have to be compensated with academic credit or pay, but I know from personal experience interning at a newspaper that no one really pays attention to that law anyway.

I'll probably get slaughtered for saying this, but oh well... A lot of girls that I've met have been raised and treated like they're princesses. So, when they get older, their standards and attitude reflect that.

Hollywood movie inbound. Jon Finkel played by Michael Berryman. Alyssa Berzerawqkask played by Jessica Alba. Not to spoil the ending but Jon Finkel tries to rape our intrepid heroine with a huge dildo made of Magic cards but is saved at the last minute by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio(playing himself). It's faithful to the original story and has an important message for young women: Don't talk to nerds.

A Gawker editor doing an article with a cheap "controversial" tittle to get them page views?! this is outrageous fuck Gawker editors (Kotatu, Gizmodo Im trowing all of them in there), and about the article that was totally unnecesary , she should´ve kept that for herself or her personal Blog (facebook whatever) posting that in a broad Blog like gizmodo was a bitch move so I can´t feel simpathy for anyone like that.

The two seem kinda comparable as far as the severity of the actions taken. Really it seems like it's nothing if not exactly appropriate.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the story, Alyssa Bereznak wrote this article on gizmondo (I think it has since been edited a little, but the core sentiment remains) of the article is about her dates with Jon Finkel, a former world champion of Magic the Gathering. She basically talks about how disgusted she was that he didn't disclose this beforehand and whatnot. People have since been using the hashtag #NotRightForAlyssa on twitter as a joke stating examples of people who she wouldn't want to date.

@MattyFTM: I agree with everything you said. How would she feel if someone dated her picked apart her interests/life and than posted an article on the internet for everyone to see. It was rude and uncalled for and I don't see what in the world would make her do that unless it really was just for her career.

It's not that she didn't want to date someone who was the world champion of Magic the Gathering that is so bad. She is entitled to date whoever she wants, and if she doesn't want to date someone like that, then that's her choice. We do all have preferences when it comes to people we date, and I can totally understand why someone wouldn't be attracted to a geek.

What is wrong is that she tried to publicly humiliate him by writing that article. She made his private life very, very public. She didn't change details to hide his identity. She didn't do it in a sensitive way. She went out there and posted an article that was sure to cause him a great deal of embarrassment. And why? For pageviews. She did it to get a big fat pay cheque from all the pageviews her article got. The way she treated him was abhorrent, and while the #NotRightForAlyssa stuff is dumb and stupid and I certainly wouldn't do it myself, I can totally understand why the internet are reacting in such a way.
