R.I.P. Cheat Codes

I remember when I was a young lad playing my N64 I would often times look up cheats to further my enjoyment of certain video games. But now, seeing as games have increasingly varied difficulty levels and Achievements can not be..well, achieved with cheat codes, it seems they may be a dying breed.  The only game I can really remember using codes for recently is GTA IV. Well, this is a bittersweet moment indeed. R.I.P. Cheat Codes.

true in a way i guess

but not everyone plays for achievements, so there are still people out there having fun with them. i doubt cheat codes will stop being added to games, but sure maybe not alot of people will use them, and thats their choice.

Cheat Codes were cool in some games but some abused it.. I don't really care that they're gone so that mans they weren't that important.. To me at least.

With games becoming more realistic, cheat codes feel kinda weird.

Cheat codes still exist.  I used them on LEGO Indy the other night...

...and unlocked 70G for doing so.  = D

I guess you're right. They've taken a backseat in recent years. Even GTAIV took the emphasis off of codes that the other GTA games had. Also, now most games have online multiplayer, which is no place for cheat codes. I didn't use them that often anyway, they were cool for seeing like additional stuff, like flying cars in San Andreas and that sort of stuff, but for me, that always came after I had seen pretty much everything else the game had to offer.

Have you played an old game recently? Play Contra without the Konami code?! Cheat codes hearken a time period where games were shedding off their arcade roots, our tastes as well as our entertainment has matured. Games now have difficulty curves for godsake. Good ridince cheat codes. I'd rather have a enjoyable challenging experience, than having to rely on something like a game genie to finally beat a game.

I used my Game Genie to get my games to actually fucking play...not for the cheats.  lol
Although, me and my brother were able to make codes for that thing that weren't in the books.  = D  We was crafty bastards.

Cheat codes are the reason I got goatse'd for the first time.
This was back in the 9th or 10th grade and I was looking for cheats for WWF Attitude on N64.
So I was mIRC in this gaming chat at the library at school and asked some folks if they knew of any cheats.
A helpful samaritan adviced me to go to www.goatse.cx since it was chockful of tips and tricks for all manner of games.
What subsequently opened(In more ways than one) before my eyes scarred this youth of a mere 14 or 15 years old.
I rememebr being real scared too since I was on a school comp and was afraid I'd get into trouble for opneing that page. Thankfully nothing came of that.
Since that day I have never been the same, gazing into that abyss is a truly lifechanging experience

Cheat Codes are retarded, I'm sorry.
That being said, unlockable overpowered gear and options are fine.

I still love them. Some really were fun (goldeneye, etc.)

That being said, most PC shooters still have some cheat component in the console (noclip, etc).

They will never actually die.

soon enough, U, U, D,D, L, R,L, R, B, A... will be something only the old wise folk of the gamers council will remember. Its like an ancient chant, that holds great power when used on the holy relics of konami.

Play Deadly Towers on NES for a challenge then.

I don't mind cheat codes, actually I find that a game like GTA is the only game where cheat codes would be okay to have. It's just more hilarious.

I'd only use them to get extra enjoyment out of games, like Saints Row 2.  There are some hilarious codes.

I was just playing GTA: SA the other night. When I looked at my stats, I had around 1,250 cheats entered from the time I first started playing the game. They saved my life. (And my weapons, armor, and vehicles) And I was surprised that I could beat the Madd Dogg mission. :p

It really is sad.  I remember as a kid, I would surf what was then a shell of the internet for cheat codes on a nearly hourly basis.  It's probably been years since I've used one.

People never like to admit it on the Internet -- especially at gaming sites -- but pretty much everyone has used a cheat code of some sort, at one time or another. This holds especially true if you have been gaming for several years.  They now hold a stigma that somehow makes you less of a gamer, but things weren't always this way.  The Konami code is immortalized for a reason.

I think we all knew cheat codes were going to be thing of the past once achievements were introduced. Online multiplayer is fun, but it also played a part in the downfall of cheat codes. Games are just so competitive now.  As someone who still prefers singleplayer games for the most part, I miss the fun things you could do with cheat codes.  I'd rather have them than achievements or trophies any day.  Personally, I think they should have an option where you can use codes, as long as trophies or achievements are deactivated for whatever game you use them on.  That way, the  integrity achievment system isn't compromised, and old school gamers such as myself can still enjoy part of the fun that is embedded in gaming history, but is now a lost part of it.
