Games is pretty much the movies of video games. Short and sweet, over-encompassing, simple. You understand what someone's talking about by context, and if you need a more explicit approach you can always just say "video games" to clarify. The same as someone talking about movies, then maybe needing to specifically refer to a "feature length film" or something.

Now, if you want to be fancy, it's hard to beat Ben's interactivities shout.

I guess the tradeoff is ResetERA having a more active forum/community, while GB has more professional content in videos and podcasts.

I think @dochaus is right. Giant Bomb has a community thread on ERA because the site puts out professional content that people follow, and have for years. So the community (GB's) is pretty large.

I would really enjoy an online survival RPG with the Fallout world. I didn't really dig the base-building in FO4, but I could see it being pretty cool in a collaborative (or even competitive) world.

I'd be really interested to see how cross-platform may pan out for something like this. (Typical situation as of late where everyone cross-platforms besides Sony, maybe?)

@rokuthirteen: Yeah. This was one of the first games released for the system and I played a TON of it. Something tells me it would not hold up!

Oh, yeah. Almost definitely not. There's a bar where I live that has a Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey cabinet there, and it's definitely a relic. That, and all games between people that know how to do power shots end up 10+ on each side.

@mistersims: Based on your list, our tastes are kind of similar. If that's the case, I'd definitely recommend Celeste. It's easily the game I've put the most time into outside of BotW and Odyssey.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

It looks like the scene on the Twitch stream was reset/changed to be the Vault Boy sleeping with a watch by him. The watch looks like it's reading 9:47ish. Maybe that's a good time to check back to see if something will happen?

I don't know how much it should be on the list, but I'd get a real kick out of Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. I used to play this for hours and hours with my brother and neighborhood friends.

@lydian_sel: Man, I dunno about this "east is a good starter zone" business. The birds in the north are a complete cakewalk in all their forms compared to the asshole giant plants that leap at you in a bunch of fights in the east.

I haven't fought the birds in the north, but the big, diving plants are annoying in the east, for sure.

I started with the Eastern zone. There are a few points that piqued my game design sense and lead me to believe this area was the intended 'easier' start to the game:

  • The dog in town always barks to draw the player's attention and then quickly flees through the eastern exit, as if leading the player in that direction. Since following a canine was already established as a trope I thought it to be significant.
  • The summertime colour palette of the east is very tranquil and inviting, something you see quite often in the opening areas of old school games, the other zones in HLD have a more extreme and imposing feel.
  • The east is really big and slightly more non-linear in its pathways, providing players with a lot of chances to explore and observe obvious things that they won't be able to accomplish until upgrades are unlocked.
  • While it has a lot of tough enemy rooms, the boss of the east is probably the easiest in the game.

This is purely speculation and I don't think starting with another zone would hamper the gameplay experience in any way, there are just a bunch of smaller details about the eastern zone that lead me to believe it's a good introduction and vertical slice of the overall HLD experience.

I've since finished the Eastern zone, and I agree with you.

While the enemies can be tough, they aren't as punishing as some other zones. The visuals are fairly friendly (colors and structures, etc.). It gets you used to reading the map. There are a plentiful amount of health packs. And, like you said, the final boss is fairly straight forward.
