It helps if you write something. Then its more readable.

Nah, I never take offense on Live. It's a target range on there.

The way I've seen "yank" used in regards to Americans can easily be considered a slur, though. I sometimes use "red coats" as a retort, but I digress.

(I'm joking about that, but I totally should)

The standard Australian word for british person is to call them a Pom. Try that.

I dont think anyone knows what to call us, they just resort to awful Australian accents.

"Yank is slang and thus shouldn't cause offence but I'm fully aware every region has their idiots and that's why I said yesterday (well I think I did) that if the majority of Live players were English then the same problem would occur but probably the other way around.

As it happens these are the problems we face and I think if you give players the OPTION to play national, continental or worldwide at least that way people who are joining American or Candian or what have you players have CHOSEN to mingle with other American's who have chosen to mingle. I really do think it would work swimmingly and actually I believe Nintendo's (urgh) Wi-Fi service is the one that have took on this idea the most. I'm pretty sure all the Nintendo Wi-Fi games support the option for national or worldwide matches. It does solve the issue of a lag a little.

Having said that I think MsCortana's idea of age caps is another excellent way of letting adults play with adults and children play with children. I think it's fair to say that the idiots from ANY region on the Internet tend to be the teenagers or younger players so introducing age ranges could be a way of side stepping these kids.
"
Thats probably a good idea. It would solve alot of lag issues we cop here in Australia.
Although it would have to be a choice, because it can be slim pickings for some games due to our low population.

The age cap also would help alot, maybe giving some confidence for responsible adults let their kids play on live. There really shouldnt be anyone under 15 on there as it is.

"I don't mean to sound caustic or anything of the sort toward Europeans, but it seems the British are still angry about the whole independence thing--considering every time I get on live, I get chastised for being a "yank" and a "wanker." (I kid, I kid--I love Brits)

In all seriousness, Live is like anywhere else that's widely accessible: children that annoy you, people your age being dicks just because they can or to cover up a weakness (usually stems from social issues), or just people you would never get along with.

I run into a lot more British kids than kids from any other region, and they're always using slurs on me--never understood that. My favorite, I have to say, is "yank." I have quite a few British guys on my list, as well as a few Aussies and Japanese cats. Americans, particularly, have probably incited a bit of hatred amongst the younger British generation on Live, and I can understand that, but I can't play a game without them going off on everyone.

It's not exclusively British (or even European), sure. I mean, there are a ton of Americans who just go on and on and on about nothing at all (they do make sure to insert a number of derogatory terms, every now and again).

Basically, the bottom line is this: Every region has assholes, and they're going to be assholes to everyone they can be.

My advice to British people upset over this: Use an American accent. ("Oh jeez, done gone off and did it again, Pa" is a good one; universally used here)
"
Yank is not a slur.

Its a slang word. I hope your not taking it as an insult.

forget it, people arent reading what you are writing and taking it as a personal attack instead.

As far as a solution, maybe a less lenient or a warning system, for people who are reported as bad players.

I think you guys conveniently skipped over a few of the points I made in the original post. I totally understand that these guys are not reflective of your country or your culture.

They are representative of the XBOX Live experience though.

I'm not looking for a war or enemies here -- I'm just telling it like it is.
"
No, I read your post throughly and re-read it actually.  I'm well aware of your points, I just believe it foolish to say these experiences are "representative" of the XBOX live experience.  It is not!  That is not a valid statement, unless you can provide a link to some hard data that will back your statement up.  Can you?  Are there stats that say X number of live users are Stereotype A?  A few poor experiences does not warrant a collective representation of an experience.  How many people have you met via live? 1000....10,000....now out of those players how many were ignorant jerks?  I mean come on.....there are millions of people gaming, for you to isolate a few and then say they represent the live experience is simply absurd.
"
hard data?

is his word not good enough?

Is this all a grand conspiracy to start a hate thread about americans?

"or you to isolate a few and then say they represent the live experience is simply absurd."

Well clearly it represented the live experience for him.

Well the early civs were a fair accomplishment in gaming. The depth and complexity. Taking a civilisation from start to finish. Fair enough for him to put his name on it.

I dont think its embarrasing. A smart move in the long term. If he had never done that would he be so well recognised in the gaming community?

If it was a game in any other genre im not sure he would have gotten away with it.

perhaps you have to wait for him to make that final call before it registers.

Or just call him.
