@SeriouslyNow: Look at the App store on any phone. No, go look again. See the reams, and reams of utter shite? How many 99 cent minecraft rip-offs. How many shitty dating games. Its a wasteland, and Apple does have some requirements to get on the store. Imagine what a "post anything" environment will look like?

That's a lovely assumption you've got there. If you were a woman, I may even be interested in what you have to say (I'm an ass man after all), but as you're some random dude on the internet and your assumption is just a straw-man designed to negate any reasoned argument based on a principal of stating that every Android game and device is automatically worthless because some of the games on the app store are generic clones of other games, I'll just safely ignore it.

XBOX Live Indie Games doesn't have a post anything environment and that had mostly 'massagers' (read : put the controller on the clit) for the longest time as the most popular 'games'. Apple's iOS App store has complete oversight and yet Shake The Baby and fart apps off all manner of description ruled forever and even more relevantly, almost every iOS game is a clone of almost every other iOS game. Neither of those realities disprove the relevance of Indie gaming or the viability of OUYA or Android's potential to deliver good gaming experiences cheaply.

It really is too bad you're not a woman though because that really was a nice straw-man ass.

As I said in the earlier forum thread, RMS explains the good and bad effects of Steam on GNU/Linux well.

""Nonfree games (like other nonfree programs) are unethical because they deny freedom to their users. If you want freedom, one requisite for it is not having these games on your computer. That much is clear.""

I stopped reading there and came to the conclusion that whomever wrote that is brain dead and should be put down.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance" - Thoma Jefferson. I guess he was also brain dead as far as you're concerned.

I wonder why Steam works on Macs. Seems hypocritical.

Two things:-

OS X is BSD based, not Linux. BSD and Linux certainly share similarities but they have some marked differences too.

The Macintosh is a fixed platform. Steam only needs to support one renderer (QuartzGL via OpenGL) and one sound manager (AudioUnits) on OS X whereas on Linux it needs to support a few different renders (because Linux distros have three major Window Managers) and a few different sound managers (for the same reason as the renderer). And this is just the audio visual aspects of Steam; there's also networking, stability and licensing to consider too.

Sure, at the core of things Steam on OS X should be very similar to Steam on Linux because they are both monolithic OSes which use OpenGL as the primary 3D provider but other stuff muddies the water.

her name is Aeris or Aerith, not Aeries

Looking for logic in plots filled with macguffins only leads to disappointment.

@Sooty: But why the hate? That's what people are questioning. Disbelief, skepticism, and concern that the Ouya won't succeed are completely different from pouring vitriol on it and hoping it will fail.

I'm not qualified to discuss the viability of the Android platform, but I don't see how using it affects you (or anyone else for that matter) so personally.

I'm not hoping it will fail, I just don't see why it exists, it's a little late to release a cheap console which is starting from scratch in terms of services and games. The $99 does little when the PS3 and 360 can be had for near that second hand, and will come down further next year new at some point. (both of which are also far more powerful than a Tegra 3 device)

Very odd.

You don't understand why a cheap console which targets Indie devs and fans has room to exist in a market which has just indicated a demand with at least 5million dollars with more to come?

Denying evidence is very odd.

Nope I don't because unless they get some serious cash they won't be able to make enough units to make it worthwhile to develop for over PC/Steam. It's already estimated that the $5m won't even make like 200,000 units, even if all of that gets put into making the machine, or maybe that was when the counter was at $4m. They need to get a huge amount out there & sold to make a dent, millions & of them...fast.

and sure, if it's as open as they say then more indie games will get on there because of more lax cherry picking, but if you are telling me the Ouya is just going to be full of crap like the indie section on XBLA then I think I can pass without missing much. The good ones will show up elsewhere as it makes the most financial sense.

But eh whatever I guess, this'll all come to light next year whether it's good or bad news. No point going around in circles.

lol

cry some more

The hate for this device continues to be really weird and reactionary. Also the controller doesn't really look that bad. But okay, it's the worst thing ever designed in the history of man.
Well, it gets hate because they took over 5 million dollars and all we've gotten is renders of what it might be. Of course people are going to be skeptical. And that d-pad looks shocking.

Actually, it's really because mostly comments come from people who believe they are experts and entertaining when generally they are neither.

If you like the story, I'd recommend Greg Bear's "Blood Music". It's the story which inspired the story which the game is based on.

I'd buy a PC. A decent PC purchased now will be more powerful than any of the next gen consoles anyway. The hardware treadmill is a myth; you really dont need to buy new parts too often if you purchase intelligently. Hell, my old PC from about the start of this console cycle still plays most new games to a reasonable degree.

ive made a blog post about this. I will not get into it but Yes there is a hardware treadmill with the pc. I have spent lots of time and money on pc gaming in my life i know how it is.

I've had PCs for 25 years myself, and I'd disagree, but that's fine, opinions and all that. Regardless, though, you can simply use the money you'd save on games via Steam (as well as not needing to purchase a shit PC for day-to-day use) on the occasional upgrade. It's still a better value proposition for a far superior platform.

I don't buy digital games to much bandwidth

What backwards ISP do you use mate?
