@arbitrarywater: Yeah That's my problem. Eventhough I certainly was around and could have played them then, I never got to play any of them when they would have felt modern. The closest I came was playing Neverwinter Nights which I did like a lot ( I wanna say that's the aurora engine?) . But that seemed a bit more user friendly than the older stuff. I think once i put serious time into one of these infinity engine games, the rest won't be as intimidating, but I'd be pretty much starting from scratch re: mechanics and tropes and such. (as a counter example Breath of the Wild was super easy for me since I've played a zillion Zelda games. Zelda combat is like riding a bike)

Really though I think the biggest issue for me is a personal failing of mine, my backlog is mammoth enough that there are things on that are just as appealing to me that I don't have to work as hard to learn them with more modern graphics. So it's just a question of willpower and desire and blocking out distractions. Some of which are also on this list.

Thanks for the advice! that sounds like a solid plan with Devil May Cry. I was actually leaning towards the reboot since I figure I wouldn't miss any lore, but I haven't been crazy about past Ninja Theory games.

And yeah your comments on Planescape are basically what i'm thinking as well.

TBH given how stacked 2017 is with fantastic new releases, I seriously doubt I touch any of these this year.

Have you played the new Fire Emblem yet? I'm absolutely loving the addition of the turnwheel. It sure beats save scumming. Now I can play on classic/hard whatever it's called like I want to without burning myself out due to my perfectionist tendencies.

@amlabella: I know! I've got no good reason for it. I've even played Metroid 2 (and the fan remake AM2R) last year. So I probably ought just get off my butt and get it done. :)

Ha I was in similar boat! JRPGs were my preferred genre for a very long time and some real bangers came out from 1994-2006 or so. I still play them but I probably lean more action adventure these days.

That's cool about Symphony of the Night, can't say I'm too surprised. I feel like metroidvanias in general hold up very well compared to most older games. I'm not sure if it's because the gameplay is just that timeless or that there has been relatively so few of them that the best in the genre haven't really been eclipsed by newer ones.

Woof, that artstyle doesn't look do the game many favors. Not surprised this game isn't getting a lot of attention.

You'd think a game about making cosplay would have an emphasis on looking great itself. The dev probably couldn't afford to make it look any better I'm sure. Making games is hard and expensive.

I don't know if the system still even does much Sparky, but your task sounds like it's perfect one for a Steam Curator.

@lentfilms: Yeah, I agree. I really love Valkryia Chronicles and I like VNs and games like Persona, so I figure these games are likely up my alley.

I was just think about classic Namco games the other day (Tower of Drauga etc) and how unknown they are despite being such influential games. It sure seems like there are just some franchises that Japanese publishers didn't give a proper chance in the west. A large number of them seemed to be in PxZ. Valkyrie, Super Robot Wars, Sakura Wars to name a few, all of those are pretty well established brands in Japan but zero visibility over here.

Valkyrie in particular felt like she could have been one of gaming's groundbreaking female characters in the 80's and 90's along with the likes of Samus, Chun Li, Lara Croft and Rosella. But she never really got the chance over here.

@arbitrarywater: so I met the creator of Legends of Eisenwald at PAX two years ago. seemed like a super nice guy, also justifiably worried about how his game would do . I was the only guy at his booth at the time for a good ten minutes. It got a little uncomfortable.

Unfortunately the game didn't impress me much, seemed like a classic case of not having enough money to make the game the way he probably intended to. Like a lot of kickstarter games.

But I ended up buying because I felt bad for him and also felt given the resources he could make something really good

fwiw just play the PS1 version of FFT. That's what I played back in the day at release and it was amazing then. Personally I found the translation plenty goo enough to catch what's going on. That's the game that made me a fan of the whole genre

Speaking as someone who wrestles a lot with this very issue,Don't overthink it. While there may be no optimal version of the game, it's a great game no matter how you play it. You can always look up a better translation for dodgy parts of the text so go with runs best imo. The worst thing to do is let this issue box you into a mental corner where you never play one of the all time greats.

Let me add in some of my own horrifically wrong predictions Sparky!

Capcom- I'm hoping Capcom reveals Deep Down as Dragon's Dogma 2. Since the Xb1/PS4 port is coming, and Itsuno has made cryptic comments on twitter I have a feeling they will have something in that vein announced. Might be a new IP instead that plays in a similar style. I think they will also tease Resident Evil 8 as some tie-in for a new PS4 Pro VR sku.

Also there will be stuff on the new Monster Hunter for switch.

Rockstar- New Red Dead info comes out, and it's always online with a co-op campaign. The game will basically be multiplayer focused like GTA online

Activision/Blizzard- A new Overwatch tie in mobile game. Call of Duty mobile IP. New WoW expansion

Konami- annoys the $hit out of all us by making the horrific new Metal Gear an Xbox exclusive

Square Enix- Shows the new marvel IP, Teases Kingdom Hearts 3, FF Vii remake a bit more and shows a Title card for Final Fantasy XVi but no other info about it.

Firaxis- New CiV Vi expansion and teases XCOM 3

EA- Actually has a good presser for once showing more of Jade raymond's Star Wars game.

Sega/Atlus- Announces new Company of Heroes game and reveals a new IP for the Switch

Sony-cat's out of the bag on most of what Sony has coming down the pipe, but will show more of Death Stranding. The surprises will be VR related. Probably show a couple new SKUs of PS4 Pros.

Microsoft- Comes out harder than ppl expect. Scalebound is un-cancelled but re-purposed into something else. Announces 2-3 new IP for scorpio. Crackdown 3 might be one of them

Nintendo- 3DS gets the Vita treatment nothing mentioned at all. Mario odyssey will be the sole focus of the show like Zelda was last year.

Betheseda- Most of the show will be about Quake Champions. And some new unexpected Mobile Ip related to Edler Scrolls.

Ubisoft- Last Presser of Ubi as we know it since Vivendi will swallow them soon. Ass Creed Egypt, The Crew 2, new Splinter Cell, Far Cry 5 and a new expansion pack for the Division. Updates on For Honor and Wildlands.

@lentfilms: Thanks so much! That's very very helpful. I'll look into whether the PC versions are viable.

I found out about these games from Project X Zone (which I played last fall). I didn't care for that game, but I really liked SW characters and themes. When I looked at the gameplay it looked up my alley :)

When I learned of these games, it was a similar feeling to when I learned Fire Emblem existed in Japan for years before ti came here.

awesome stuff @lentfilms! I'm just starting to dip my toe into this series. Just out of curiosity how were you able to play these?

I thought only one of these was localized in the West and I had a hard enough time finding a copy of So Long my Love
