Gaming Trends that need to Die in 2010

Inventory Management/ Over Encumbrance

Nothing pulls me out of a game quicker than being stopped mid action to be told that I'm carrying to much equipment, it's a very jarring experience and something that I don't think needs to exist in modern gaming.

Let's take for example Dragon Age: Origins as a recent example of this. You're halfway through storming up some epic tower, killing ever enemy in site and looting all their corpses as you go until suddenly, your inventory is full. What do you do? Do you sit there and flick through every piece of equipment you have trying to pick out the weakest and worst to throw away? Do you do a U-turn and return to the nearest vender to try and get some free space and some extra cash? Or just plough on and ignore all the possibly great loot that could be yours?
The most relevant Image I could find :D
The most relevant Image I could find :D

The counter argument is that it adds an element of realism to the game, well I'd like to counter that by saying being able to carry 75 broadswords before hitting that weight limit is in no way realistic. It's simple a great way to artificially lengthen games and it shouldn't exist any more.

Preorder Bonuses

Pre Order Bonuses themselves are ok, but not when it seems to take away from the game.

A great example of this is the up coming Splinter Cell Conviction, according to a promotional video for the "Limited Collectors Edition the collectors edition (which can only be purchased from certian retailers, another thing that needs to die) contains exclusive weapons, clothing for the character and even an exclusive mode! That's like a 3rd of the fucking game!

Zombies

They want your brains... and a rest for a while.
They want your brains... and a rest for a while.
It's been said to death so I won't go on... but Zombies should take a break for a few years, kick back with a beer and come back fresh and exciting/scary in a few years time.

Wastelands / The Post Apocalypse

Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Borderlands, RAGE e.t.c
I don't want to see another eradiated empty area interspersed with small towns and buildings built out of old car parts/road signs/ or what ever other trash survives our inevitable doom for a while.

More to come soon maybe.

Wii games that don't use MotionPlus

The gesture recognition of the standard Wiimote is nearly unusable, and even in those games that use it well, it is not 100% reliable. Every month there is a game that could have been significantly improves with MotionPlus but devs refuse to utilize it. Why? I don't know. It doesn't make sense.

Worst offenders: Punch-Out, No More Heroes 2
Shining Examples: Wii Sports Resort, Red Steel 2

New consoles even come shipped with the peripheral, god dammit. It's like devs never utilized the SuperFX chip when it came out for the SNES.

Why the fuck would you want M+ in Punch-out? The controls are perfect they way they are.

We've been balding badasses with deep voices shooting aliens in brought-down buildings for almost a decade now. It was fun, but it seriously needs to stop.

Worst offenders: Borderlands, Demon's Souls
Shining ExamplesHeavy Rain, The Last Guardian

Here's a crazy thought: Let's explore as many different (maybe even true-to-life) people and worlds in video games as we can.
Wow, there's only two oversized weapons in Demon's Souls, and no one in that game is a space marine. I like how you use two games that aren't even out as an example. "

I don't understand why he put Demon's Souls on there either.

I think the item management is fine, because it makes you think a little, sure it can be a bit of a hassle, but it adds a little bit of difficulty to the game. If I could carry around every single thing I needed for the game, it would be pretty easy.

Pre-order bonuses need to die in a fire though.

Im indifferent to zombies and Wastelands.

I think you might have misread what I meant, I'm not trying to get to the top of the tower as quickly as possible, it's just how the micro managment of the items can really pull you out of any emersion you may have with the game and makes it so much more apparent to be a game, rather than an experience.

Also, I'm shocked at how many replies this thread got, thanks guys. If you want to add any more to the list feel free. I might have some more coming soon.

Agreed. In-game pre-order bonus' need to stop. Especially when the offered content can only be obtained via pre-order, essentially locking out anyone who didn't pre-order from accessing said content.

As if the medieval setting with the dwarves, mages, and kings didn't making you realise this is primarily a game, and by playing the game it is an experience. Jeez, but no, it took you to change around a few items to realise you're playing a game as if all the other hints that shout THIS IS A FUCKING GAME!! at you weren't enough. Wow man, wow, dungeons and dragons bro, dungeons and dragons.

Not really, though. That's like saying a windows icon popping up in the middle of Lord of the Rings(the movie) wouldn't be distracting because its all fanciful wullabaloo anyway. A world doesn't have to be real for people to immerse themselves, in fact that's a big part of why its so immersive. Things popping into that which are distractingly gamelike might bum some people out.

You did not just say zombies and wastelands...no just no.

Anyway, I didn't know about SCC exclusive preorder mode. That's just fucking stupid. They'll enjoy losing customers that would have brought the game thanks to the 3rd mode.

2nd Anyway:

QTEs: Why the fuck would I want cutscene gameplay?

Random motion sensoring: Why the fuck would I want to open a door by moving around my PS3 controller?

Games shorter than 15 hours: Fuck that!

Pointless secondary character/gameplay: Fuck you weakling from Shadow Of Rome/Bruce Banner! FUCK YOU!!!!!!

Story DLC: Fuck paying for part of a story now and paying for the other fucking part later.

Tecmo/Team Ninja: FUCK YOU!!!!

PS3 having no BC: What in the fuck?!

Consoles not including controller that has a removable wire: Fuck paying for all these fucking batteries!

Fucking Mass Effect 2's gamestop pre-order dlc!!!!! To make things worse they "ran out" of collectors editions so I was forced to choose between pre order exclusive armor/weapon or the collectors edition. What a bunch of bullshit!

Edit: oh, and to make matters worse i/m sure the "exclusive" dlc will be available on xbl for purchase but I'll never know until release day because it's this huge stupid secret. You guys lost a Collectors edition purchase because of pre order dlc!

no it's not but alot of 'games' (ie videogames and board games) stem from things like D&D although I'm guessing it goes back to something much further, but I'm not a big enough nerd to know what that is unfortunately. Anyway, ya ya elves, mages, fucking orcs etc those things are in games which usually require a bit of tactics and loads of nerdy fun like that and shit. Dragon Age is a game, and maybe then an experience. But micro management is a crucial compenent which you should appreciate and not dread.

I was making a valid point, I'm aware it's a game, I'm not the retard you seem to think I am. It's simply a matter of being taken away from the story and the enviroment to deal with things that slow down the experience and pulles the player right out of there character.

Inventory - I wouldn't say get rid of it completely since you're ignoring all logic by being able to carry 10 thousand broadswords, but do something like Torchlight where you can always sell some shit immediately so you don't have to actually throw anything away or backtrack to a town.

Preorder bonus - I feel you, but unless we burn down gamestops all over the nation, it ain't gonna stop.

Zombies + Wastelands - Perhaps this is the new WWII syndrome, but i agree until I see a game like Left4dead 2 that does it right.

Aside from pre-order bonuses, the rest all have their counter-points that I find superior to the original.  The biggest reason is that, outside of pre-order bonuses and loot systems, the other things are agrivated by the things outside of gaming.  Film and other media take the concepts and also run with it and so you get wastelands and zombies in a bunch of other things.  So when you sit down and play a game, you feel like this is overdone.

Here are three that I cannot see anyone else disagreeing with:

World War II from the Allies Perspective

I have a feeling people got tired from World War II simply because they did the same thing over and over again with it.  The Allies are so overdone and outside of Brothers in Arms, nothing fresh happened to WWII since Call of Duty 2.  Now if we did a more slower-paced different tone game from the German and Japanese side, we might be onto something.  Otherwise, we've had plenty of gung-ho no morality British/American/Russian superman running around gunning down Nazi's and Japanese soldiers.

Pre-order Demos

Absolutely the worse Pre-order bonus of them all.  Pre-order bonuses make a whole lot of sense because frankly pre-orders don't.  That's just the concept of insurance bleeding into retail because games cost so much.  However to release the demo to those who pre-ordered is utterly retarded.  The people who pre-ordered are the people who are guaranteed to have the game earlier than anyone else.  Why do they get the demo, which is purposely designed to help consumers make a decision to buy the game, when they will already get the game.  It's like giving free samples to someone after they already bought the box of food.  Makes no goddamn sense.

Amnesia

When did developers assume they have to shove amnesia in to justify having the back story and current story told at once?  It's a lazy plot device that developers and filmmakers use to put the character on the screen with as much knowledge about the place as you.  But we don't need amnesia to immerse myself in the experience of figuring out what's going on, I'm already doing that by playing the goddamn game.  The intrigue comes from knowing the character has a history but not knowing how you find that out.  Chances are a story driven game will do a good enough job about its characters that it doesn't need amnesia.  And there's a bunch of games where you just don't give a damn about who you are playing or what is going on because you wanna shoot things etc.

Basically what I'm saying is I don't want to hear "you are a guy with amnesia who woke up in mystery place x and you totally need to figure out what's going on!".  Fuck that shit.

Re: Inventory management.  I agree with the sentiment and disagree with the solution.  Adventurers are not supposed to get rich by selling second-hand weapons.  They find gold and jewels, and if they find any sweet weapons well they just use them themselves.  The way you get better weapons and armor is by impressing the people who can afford to give you the money, buy them for you, or who already have them to give away.  I'm sure grabbing guys' purses is easy enough, but this lootless system solves several problems:
Unbelievable inventory systems
Grinding to afford new items
The ubiquitous Merchant who sells you things you need at an exorbitant price despite the fact he'll die if you lose

Perhaps some of you say  that you like having a system in place that rewards the ones who put in time to make the extra buck with a little extra content.  Well, to them I say, the solution is to have extra content for making money.  Take AC, for example, where you just go on a sidequest and get paid without worrying about any money.

Fawkes was originally a woman.  If you read the notes stored on the terminals in the labs, you see that the behemoths became sexless as a result of the mutation.

I don't entirely agree....

Inventory Management-Both having it and not having it is obnoxious. In Fallout 3, I have way more weapons than I need. Pool cue, katana, sledgehammer, baseball bat, MoleRat stick. There are so many weapons that you can't combine because with a lot of weapons and no item cap, there are just too much. In sharp contrast Borderlands has a 12 item limit; where it is believable but I hate dropping so much stuff. In Dragon Age I haven't had either problem. I think that having a huge inventory is fine, as long as its done right. Resident Evil 4 had it right with the case. You made it fit, so it was perfect. I think it is weird that RE 5 didn't follow suit.

Pre-Order Bonuses....
Fine, I also hate the buy this at Game stop to get stuff. Left 4 Dead 2 had 1 weapon, Creed 2 had 2 maps, that stuff isn't bad. I actually enjoy that a lot. I haven't experienced any thing as bad as what you were saying about Splinter Cell, but it should never be that bad.

Zombies????
I love Zombies. Left 4 Dead is a zombie thing, Dr. Ned was great. Uncharted had Zombie... things. They are starting to play a smaller role, but they are very, very good!

Post Apocalypse....
Fallout and Borderlands? What else now? Right, that seems to be about it. 2 games aren't a problem, and I welcome more of this type of game, seeing as so far they have been fairly long epics. And they all have vaults.

I could have sworn there were two threads just like this in the past week. Ugh, anyway all I agree with is the preorder thing. I'm all for inventory management and encumbrance. As it is generally executed, it isn't really realistic, but to say that it is designed to artificially lengthen the game is complete nonsense. You're thinking of the level grind made famous by Final Fantasy and EverQuest.

I think with the Day 1 DLC/Preorder Exclusives, they should do what Relic did with Dawn of War 2. Make it exclusive for a month or two before releasing it in a patch

However, exclusive DLC for new copies makes more sense than stupid DRM on PC games

Fawkes was originally a woman.  If you read the notes stored on the terminals in the labs, you see that the behemoths became sexless as a result of the mutation.

Oh, really? that would explain these feeling I've been having....

Wastelands / The Post Apocalypse -  Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Borderlands, RAGE e.t.c"

I find this a little unfair, seeing that two of those games are still half a year from being released.

I actually really like preorder bonuses, but agree with your point. They're nice when they don't take parts of the game away from non-new game buyers/ renters. I was disgusted when the most requested mode of the past 5 years, Team Builder, was made as a new-game only mode in NCAA 10.

I'm not really against what Dragon Age did either, but I think instead of including DLC on disc, it should be a one-time code for a free DLC in-time (although I doubt this will happen).

I really enjoyed how Guitar Hero and Rock Band deal with pre-orders, which is how I just stated in the last paragraph. With Rock Band 2, the buyer received a voucher for a DLC set of 20 songs that were released a month of two later.

Well, since this this blog has been revived from the dead, let's see if anything has changed regarding these topics in the last year.  Nothing? Huh.

Sorry, Soap. Apparently the games industry doesn't care about you.

I guess the good news is that there's no Fallout game coming out this year.

How appropriate :P

Anyway, most I agree with, but I *like* inventory management. I find that kind of thing very satisfying. I guess the best example would be SS2, where it adds to the atmosphere. Deciding, for example, whether you want to keep ammo or healing items, strongly contributes to the survival nature of the game.

Yeah, I agree. Inventory management is often poorly executed, but when done well it can add to the game. I like those parts where I have to make a decision between certain items, like whether I think I need more ammo or more health.
