The Elder Scrolls

After playing about 40 hours of Bloodmoon, Tribunal and Oblivion this week, I was searching for more info about the next Elder Scrolls game. What I have found is a bunch of really bad youtube videos which claim to have content of the next game in them. Looks like they are all fake.

However what I found out was that there is a new Bethesda podcast: http://bethblog.com/podcast/
They are talking about New Vegas and Rage but also hint towards a new game which they don't want to show yet. I am pretty sure that they are talking about the next Elder Scolls game since Todd Howard says that they've been working on the title since they finished Fallout 3 and that people would be excited about it.
That's about all the info I got from the web but I will keep following the podcast and eventually they will announce the game I guess.

As for everyone else who can't wait for the game you can still pick up the old game - like I did. I was amazed by how great Oblivion still looks after it's been five years since its release. Though I prefer the mechanics of Morrowind  I still liked the dynamic schedules every character in the game had and also that the game had complete voice acting in every conversation. I think it looked kind of strange when everyone just stood still or walked in the same circle over and over again in the earlier games.

Maybe I will pick up Daggerfall once I have some more time to spare, I'd really like to get back to the Elder Scrolls' roots. Arena might be a little too old for me. And as for the other games I heard that they are all pretty bad. I even own Shadowkey for the N-Gage but still never played it.

I'm hoping for a new Elder Scrolls, I enjoyed Morrowind and Oblivion a lot.  Honestly Bethesda really knows how to put you into the game for several hours, like you've just stepped into your television and into a whole new world.  I'm excited about New Vegas and Rage also, excited to see how those turn out and what they have to bring to the table.

@RichardLOlson: plus their games come relatively bug free. Sure, there are some glitches on release day but nothing serious considering that the games are HUGE.

edit: have you checked out the podcast?

Did you see the George Bush Elder Scrolls 5 video, or the Hitler one?  (I've obviously done this search several times myself).

Did you know that there's a glitch that makes to impossible to finish Oblivion once you've spent 400+ hours on the 360 version?

Neither did I until it hit me. Wasn't even halfway into the main quest and guilds then.

Actually Besthesda's next game (whether that's a new Elder Scrolls game or not is up for debate (though I think that's what they're working on)) is being made for the current generation.

@Feanor:
I don't know but you could say the same thing about when development started on ESIV back in 2002.  I am sure they didn't know what hardware the xbox 360 would have and much less the PS3.  Somehow they are able to get launch titles out there right, so you may only need an idea of the hardware up to a year before release.  And with the next xbox it shouldn't be hard to imagine it would be using something like DX11 so that helps.  Hardware guys keep the software guys in the know so that they can bust out launch titles.
The drawback about having it on this gen is the game would not look much better than oblivion unless Rage does some amazing stuff.

After a certain amount of playtime on a single save (it varies on the 360 and PC) some special effects stop animating, wouldn't hurt that much except for an endgame door that won't open because of that. I've seen it it referred to as the Megaton glitch in some Elder Scrolls forum.

I'm mostly curious as to where the next Elder Scrolls game will take place, I've heard some speculation that they might go with Summerset Isle or Skyrim. I don't care much for Altmer so I'm gonna hope Skyrim or maybe even Black Marsh (yay Argonians). Where would you guys want the next game to take place?

I think you are right, if memory serves me right Todd Howard said in an interview after they shipped Fallout 3 that they would be 'developing addons for the game over the next few months and that they would start developing the next obvious game' or something like that following the completion of those addons. I probably read this on GameSpot, but I am too lazy to search for it, too much advertising going on on this site.

I think you should actually make a poll or a forum post out of this, more opinions might be popping up that way. As for myself I am not too sure. Morrowind looked pretty rough with it's ashland and sheogorath region in comparison to Oblivion's beautiful landscapes for example but I loved both styles.

@Stefan: If you want some hilarity, you should really at least give Daggerfall a try. Sure, even with most of the game-breaking bugs gone, it still manages to be, by far, the jankiest game I have ever played. Ever. Sure, as a game it's aged poorly (the procedurally generated dungeons are too big. Really. Far, far, far far far far too big), but as a history lesson (i.e. what RPGs were in 1996), it's an interesting one.

Arena on the other hand... is just kind of boring in comparison. If you want the real roots of the genre, check out the Ultima Underworld games. They actually manage a competence that is surprising for 18 year old games.

If you are waiting for an new Elder Scrolls and haven't tried Fallout, you really should give it a try.  Its not a replacement for Elder Scrolls, but it hits on some of the same things that makes it so great.  Personally I enjoyed Fallout more, but, I my be in the minority on that.

Some time ago I remember an article where bethesda copyrighted Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

I want Skyrim myself, I always made a Nord Berserker in the ES games so it'd be cool.

Dude, are you talking about Bethesda? The guys that made the PC version of that buggy game I loved on the 360, that took me like, two freaking weeks of non-stop research to just get it playable on a PC that was well-over the system requirements? That game that apparently modders know more about the game's engine, than the own developers?

Hey, remember that DLC for Fallout 3 that launched, worked, and didn't need a patch?

I have thoroughly enjoyed Bethesda games, both S-Ranks in Fallout 3 and Oblivion and I'm hoping to get another S-Rank in Fallout 3 PC (NO CHEATING!)
But there's "relatively bug free", then there's "buggy" and then there's, as one individual tried to calm my frustrations of getting Fallout 3 to work with a current PC: "The Bethesda charm."

I don't like "The Bethesda Charm".  :P
If I'm going to be a game tester, and spend a considerable amount of time getting this thing just to run correctly, like so many people have had to do: Then I want to be paid.

@vidiot Morrowind and Oblivion worked pretty well on Xbox and Morrowind worked also adequatly on PC when it was launched, consider its size. Fallout 3 didn't crash on my PC but I only picked it up a couple of weeks after its original release. I can't say much about Oblivion's PC launch since I only picked up the GotY edition recently on Steam. i have to admit that there were bugs in all those games but when I think of crazy buggy I am thinking about RPGs like Gothic 3 or the majority of MMOs.

No it's a different bug, the details of which can be found here. I remember reading somewhere that they would have to remake the game from the ground up to have it fixed.

That's great?
Other people on the other hand are another issue.
Including other GiantBomb members.
And myself.

Like I said, I spent about almost a week researching the crap out of this.
The problems are not isolated, they are pretty widespread to users who pretty much have anything more than a dual core computer, and windows XP. Fallout 3 flat-out not compatible with 64-bit processors, you need to manually edit your .ini file. Essentially tell the game to properly use your processor, and then also force lock the FPS.

Even after that there are cases, including myself, that you will still run into problems. Micro-stuttering is the main complaint, you can alleviate (I can't say fix because I still see it sometimes) such issues by applying multiple user-made fixes. When I say multiple, I mean multiple, the amount of troubleshooting fixes for this thing are mind-blowing. After applying multiple fixes, I began experiencing hard crashes.

I was able to fix....no...make the game playable, after I uninstalled the entire thing and reinstalled the entire thing, including a plethora of codecs that apparently the game didn't like either, (It has incompatibility issues with FFDShow too O_O ) then began applying the fixes making sure I remembered each one I used.

I still experience the occasional crash to desktop. I have to manually save each time I enter a new area, because apparently the game likes to crash with auto-save.

Trust me. This game is a mess for pretty much anything aside from what it was made for, and needs some desperate support. People can jump up and down and proclaim that the game wasn't tested for new hardware, -insert any game made in the past five years here- sure as hell wasn't tested for my system specs, and it runs fine. I literally had quite possibly the worst time ever getting it to work, and even considered quite realistically to throw in the towel. The last time it took that long to get a game to run correctly was Half-Life 2 when it was first released, and for that reason I had simply an inadequate machine. Now I have 9 Gigs Ram, i7Quad core, GForce GTX 285. There is no reason for me to have had to go through any of that, period. I fear for the compatibility for the game on future PC set-ups, it's a great game that deserves more.

I'm hoping the recent merger with Id will give them some much needed technical experience, because from where I'm standing this thing is held together with duct tape.

(Note: I've heard Oblivion PC has similar issues. For many users who experienced slow-down occasionally, Oblivion for 360 required you to manually clear out your cache overtime. For Fallout 3 360 I had several errors, one essentially killed a quest line and an NPC wouldn't spawn (restarted the game). Many people reported characters "committing suicide" after walking off railings. I also froze a few times for no apparent reason. I think the final DLC add-on worked correctly, the others had buggy launches. If I remember correctly an un-finalized work-in-progress version of "The Pitt" was initially released. So yeah: Bethesda makes buggy games. I love them, but there's defiantly problems.)

My bad, I thought Brink was in-house.  Still, the point I was (badly) trying to make was they probably don't want to distract from their marketing of those games by talking about something that's probably still a ways off.

@Jimbo I think you are right, they will probably announce TES5 after Brink is out which is set for Q2, at least here on GB. I don't think that they will wait until Rage is out though. I really liked the screenshots they released for Oblivion starting around 1.5 years before it's release - I checked for new ones every week.
