Unfinished business

All the games I started playing, then never finished for one reason or another.

List items

  • (360)

I bought Assassins Creed and Assassins Creed 2 simultaneously, planning to play through both before the release of Brotherhood. Unfortunately the first game just felt so repetitive after a few missions that I decided to skip it and move straight to Assassins Creed 2, which just improves on everything from the first game. I think I quit at the mission with a guy with decoys.

  • (PS2)

Ive never been much of a Buffy fan, only watching the occasional episode on TV here and there. Still, I got this for a few bucks and kinda liked it. It’s a decent brawler with good voice acting and a pretty good sense of humor. I quit when I had to play as some sort of puppet though.

  • (PS2)

Never really struck a chord with me for some reason. Only played a few hours and went onto something else.

  • (XBOX)

Think I got stuck at some boss fight in this game or something. I enjoyed the humor, but remember the jumping and the attacking being really annoying.

  • (PS3)

Really great game that I played a lot, then felt like I needed a break. At least halfway through, probably longer. Just never got back to it for some reason.

  • (PS2)

I never got good at these games. Didn’t get very far in this one before I just got tired of having my ass kicked.

  • (PS2)

Same as above. Did feel like I got more a grasp of everything here though, and definitely got further along. Think I got stuck at a boss and gave up.

  • (CUBE)

I really like this game a lot, and got pretty deep into the game… And then got a corrupted save. Played it some more and got to chapter 3 or 4, and then stopped.

  • (PS1)

My Moby Dick. I really can't stand this game, for a variety of reasons that my eventual blogpost on this would probably bring up. Yet some part of me wants to finish it, just so I can say I beat it. I got pretty far in, but when the party went to SPACE and some horrible love song played as the main characters were in trouble, I shut it off and haven’t returned.

  • (PS2)

Think this was the game I started playing after quitting on Bully. Got pretty far in the game, and liked it quite a bit. Don’t remember at all why I stopped.

  • (PS3)

Ugh. The story in this just never got going in the 15 hours or so I played it. I actually like the gameplay and several of the characters, but I just needed a break, and it turned out to be a lot longer than I had anticipated.

  • (XBOX)

Remember this weird game that took forever to release, and then got mediocre reviews? Yeah, I actually sorta liked it. I remember it being pretty funny, but otherwise average at best. I got stuck at some weird level where you had to swim in a certain pattern or something.

  • (360)

Barely played this. Im not much of a shooter guy really, but it seemed fun from the little I played.

  • (360)

As a huge fan of LOST, I of course had to try this out. It’s pretty bland, and I got stuck running away from Smokey carrying dynamite sticks. Ugh.

  • (XBOX)

Just like DMC, Im just not very good at this game. I think I lack the patience to really do well in this, especially against bosses.

  • (PS2)

I really liked the first Obscure as a co-op experience, and the second one is even better at capturing the feel of a teen slasher flick, killing off characters at scripted points in the story. I’ll be having a buddy help me out here, as we played it together, and I never felt like the game is a very good single player experience.

  • (PS2)

I didn’t get this game until long after the PS2 had been replaced by this generation of consoles. Ive only tried it for a very brief period of time, but it seemed really dated to me for some reason. Hoping it will grab me once I play it some more.

  • (360)

Barely played it, but seemed alright.

  • (PS2)

I really enjoyed this game, and got pretty far into it, but got stuck at some point. Don’t remember when it was though.

  • (360)

I honestly really like this game, but having to do the same side missions again and again between every story mission burnt me out after a while. Thankfully, I don’t think I have much to go.

  • (XBOX)

Really weird game, but good fun nevertheless. The problem here is that I seem to remember having saved the game at a point where I can’t go back and heal, and I have little health left, right before a big battle.

  • (PS2)

I love this game, but at a certain point you have to make several parties, and since I didn’t have enough people who are leveled up, I got stuck at a boss right before the end of the game. Will probably require some grinding. Ugh.

  • (360)

Of all the games on this list, this is the most recent one to end up in the unfinished pile. I actually really like it, and it's still on my coffee table, so its not like Ive completely abandoned it, unlike most other games here.

  • (PS3)

The time stuff got old fast, and the shooting is bland. Thankfully I think Im pretty far along in it.

  • (XBOX)

I remember this as a silly, fun, but glitchy mess of a game. No recollection of the story, or how much I even played it.

Go for Final Fantasy XIII, because I'm assuming that you've spent 15 hours without seeing the robot thing.

I should've used one of my get out of hell free cards on Okami. Nobody should play Okami anymore, though if you do, you'll like it after twenty hours or so of revulsion.

GO PLAY ASSASSIN'S CREED. It's not even that long, and then you can be done with it forever.

I suggest you finish the ones that don't take that long to finish, then work your way up. That's what I'm planning for my own pile of shame this summer.

Of those, my favorites that I played were Bully and The Saboteur so my vote is for those.

It was pretty early in the game. You ride a robot and kill things. It doesn't ever happen again, but damn, it's the moment when you know the game's gonna be awesome.

My vote goes to Psychonauts; I don't think you'll have any trouble playing through that game because it's damn good. Flawed, but damn good.

@The_Patriarch: If you're not REALLY into Japanese storytelling and mythology, there's a lot to really hate about Okami. It's a slightly innovative game that delivers on its message, but the 20+ hours it'll take you to get to the part of the game that makes it good is punishingly boring. You should probably just watch someone play it online.

Psychonauts, Conker and Devil May Cry 3. In that exact order. Psychonauts is funny and charming and fun to play, it's witty as hell and it's not too long.
Conker is also a rare case of a game that's funny, but I must admit I've never finished it either so I don't know about the length of it. But i've heard only good words for that game.
DMC3 is kind of hard, but I managed to beat it. It felt amazing at the time, but it might be cliché as shit right now. Also, perhaps a tad too ugly, and I remember some backtracking.

Oh I'm stuck at the same part in FF XIII. That transformed old guy is a cheap faggot I tell you.

Oh dude, play Eternal Darkness first! It's still a pretty unique experience to this day and was one of the coolest experiences I had with a game as a young lad.

Knock Assassin's Creed out. Game is short. (I say this, but I haven't completed it myself. I blame all the flags I was collecting.)

I'd save Psychonauts for when this marathon has you at a low point. Keep it in your pocket for when you hate yourself for even doing this (if you get to that point). I'd say start with Assassin's Creed. It's a way better game then people gave it credit for, it just lacked variety. Plus if you don't care about the flags, it's not too long.

Good luck!

Play Bully, possibly Rockstars finest offering to date, definitely Okami and you should probably give Gears a shake to see what all the fuss was about.

@Kyreo: Yeah, I definitely remember it feeling very fresh even though I didnt play it at all until sometime last year. Definitely seems like one of the frontrunners right now.
@Sparklykiss:
Yeah, I dont think I have much to go either. I will not be going after flags haha.
@boylie: Thats actually not a bad idea, but it's looking like Psychonauts might end up the first game I play.
@nick_verissimo: Yeah,  I really like it as well. The corrupted save just kinda knocked me out from going right back into it. Definitely one Im looking forward to finishing.

All right guys, I counted all the votes both here and in the thread. This is the only time votes in comments on this list will count. It's simply gonna be a mess if people vote both in blog posts and on the list, since I had to cross reference the votes to make sure nothing was getting counted twice. So from now on, only comments made in the blog posts I write will count.

Anyway, with 9 votes, the first game Im gonna be playing is Psychonauts! Looking forward to finishing it, and to see what made me quit in the first place. Assassin's Creed and Gears of War got 8 votes each and Okami came in third with 5.

Im probably gonna start playing the game tomorrow. Since I'll probably post the blogs in various boards that don't see much activity anymore, feel free to follow me to see when Im done with the game! Next game will be chosen in that thread, so hope you'll come back and vote again!
