What'cha Been Doing Pt. 5: Ask Runic Games people some questions!

 This week:
Uncharted 2
Torchlight
Ask those dudes some questions!
TV
and Saw

Uncharted 2

No Caption Provided
Uncharted 2 had an ass face of hype, not shockingly of course. Most of the hype has probably diminished my thoughts on the game as I went into it expecting way too much. It's not that I didn't like the game and that I'm saying it's a poor game, it's that there was way too many frustrating points in the game and some annoying elements that I could see people getting over, but I just couldn't. One being the platforming. It was very beautiful, yes, but it kind of feels like the game cheats itself as it gives you certain spots where you can jump extremely far and some spots where you can't. This ends with you having absolutely no idea of how far you can jump and can't jump which means you're gonna be seeing that death screen a lot, not really realizing that you can't make that jump although you made a jump much wider earlier. The other main complaint is the combat. Not the combat in general but some of the things that happen during the combat. It's pretty well known Uncharted 1's enemies were damn bullet sponges and according to many people, Uncharted 2 had changed that. While the normal enemies do go down A LOT faster, there is plenty of enemies that are still just as dumb as the one in the previous game. They explain it by saying they have "heavy armor", I find that too be complete bullshit. So if they said that every enemy in Uncharted 1 had padding on them, it would immediately be better? No. Not at all. It would be the same complaints and I feel many people are overlooking the sheer shittiness of these enemies. Also, developers need to learn, guys that are very heavy armored and kill you in one shot ARE NOT FUCKING GOOD.

While all that is disappointing, Uncharted 2 definitely has it's high points. The sheer cinematic experience and the set pieces are just plain beautiful. I love them. Also the story, it was the thing that kept me chugging along until I finally quit at around chapter 22. As it seems to be only me and a few other people that are disappointed by Uncharted, I have no problem telling you to rent it and if you like it, buy it.

SAW

Saw has so many very interesting points and a great concept that it's terribly sad how bad it all went. In Saw you play as an agent that
No Caption Provided
dedicated his life to hunting Jigsaw so Jigsaw was all "Oh no you didn't" and captured him. When you start out you're given with some weaknesses. One being that you can't really see well so you're constantly using a lighter, which is very Resident Evil-ish, and that part is great. It adds some tension and it doesn't hurt that the game looks pretty good. The other is you don't have shoes so walking on the ever so present glass hurts you. Now whoever in the world came up with that should be fired immediately. A) THAT IS SO STUPID B) Why the hell can't he just pick everyone he kills shoes? Which brings me to the combat, it's abysmal. One of the slowest, least exciting things I've ever done. You do have a variety of weapons and some are cool (I like to scalpel a bitch) but most control the exact same way and there is no real "finishing moves" that help out the sluggishness of the combat.

Saw's boss fights are very interesting, instead of using combat (Thank God) you do puzzles. Most of the puzzle are actually pretty hard and, shockingly, fun! This is the part where Saw shines is with it's really good puzzles. Almost all of them are very well designed and just an exciting thing to do. Despite the fact that Saw has some great puzzles, the entire rest of the game leaves you wanting so much more that you just don't get. I really wanted this game to be good but life's not fair sometimes. Pass on it. Maybe if you're a fan of the series you should rent it but nothing more.

Torchlight

No Caption Provided
Torchlight is developed by some of the people that worked on Diablo, I personally never played a Diablo game so I can't straight up compare it but if Diablo was fucking awesome, then this is pretty similar. Torchlight is 20 bucks which is a steal as I wouldn't have regretted paying 60 for it. The look of it is very World of Warcrafty and I love that. The best thing about it is that it will run on damn near any PC and look decent. It's running on mine and I can barely run Plants vs. Zombies. I should probably state what Torchlight is about, you're thrown into a world after choosing 1 of 3 classes, ranging from a Soldier type guy to an Alchemist who has a great Steam-punk look that forced me to pick him. From their you just accept quests and run through one huge ass dungeon, it is one big dungeon but after a certain amount of levels you'll complete a main quest and reach a waypoint which allows you to pretty much fast travel to that level from your hometown. One thing you have to get right in these types of games is the loot and it's all good. I'm always digging through my inventory trying to find some matching armor. Torchlight has officially turned me into a loot whore. One big complaint everyone has is no co-op which, yea, is a bummer but in around a year we may be getting a full fledged, free-to-play, MMO of this and if that happens, God rest my soul as I will be playing that way too much. Torchlight is a fantastic game that you need to buy, especially at only 20 bucks.

RUNIC GAMES QUESTIONS!

So, I worked out a little thing with Runic Games (developers of Torchlight) and they have allowed me to tell you all to ask some of the

Alright, the e-mail is sent. Feel free to continue to ask questions as some of the questions asked may dive too deep into talk about the MMO version of Torchlight and other stuff they can't talk about. I may have to send some back-up e-mails.

@TheGamerGeek: Thanks. I will ask a couple more encase you don't get many or just want a few extra.

Question: How will the MMO being developed for this game tie into this one? Will it just be using this games basic combat and loot system as its base but have completely different classes and skill trees? Or will it expand on the classes that are available to us now by simply giving us more classes to choose from?

Question:  Will the MMO be using the same setting of Torchlight for all of the games questing, or will it have various cities/towns with their own unique dungeon systems below them?

Question:  Will there ever be a sequel or expansion pack for the single player Torchlight game in the future, or is all of the companies development time being put into the MMO? If there is an expansion or sequel being made what kind of upgrades might we expect.

Question:  What made you guys decide on the games art style over a more dark or mature style that these type of games are usually set in?

Question:  Was there any content or ideas that you wanted to add into this game but for what ever reason was held back for the MMO, other projects or time constraints?

Question:  Is there any hope that you may ever develop a game like Torchlight but set in a Sci-fi setting as apposed to fantasy, as there hasn't ever really been a good Sci-fi game of this type before.

The reason is because they developed this quickly to hold us over until the free to play MMO is released.

I made the Alchemist and went down the Lore skill tree so i always have like 6 imps, my cat, Golems and all my zombies/skeletons out at all times and i can never tell when they die because there is almost always too many things on screen to tell. I would like to see a little window tab that lists the pets and their HP like the Mastermind class does in City of Heroes, or at least some kind of coloured outline/glow under your pets so you can tell them apart from the 10-20 other mobs running around on the screen. I was just curious to know if they plan to address this problem for my build/class.  Part 2: Another pet question if i can, are they planning to fix the pets path finding capabilities or are they just going to balance the pets always getting stuck/lost into the set?  If you do pick my question to be asked could you PM me when you post the answer because i doubt i will remember to look for it lol. "
Jeez, great question. Definitely will be asked to them

I am not sure I follow your complaint about the heavy armor dudes. They are just like any other bigger enemy in other games....brutes, those big guys in Killzone 2, etc. I find the game wonderfully balanced in difficulty. Yes, there were a few difficult sections but nothing more than a tough spot in, say, Call of Duty 4. I think the naysayers are being too quick to judge about this; it is quite easy when compared to many other, heavy-duty games.

But Modern Family is continuing to be amazing. It is one of my favorite shows right now. The last episode was hilarious as you pointed out.

You should probably buy Diablo II along with the expansion pack .You'll be able to get two of them for at least $15 or under.

I would like to know how the MMO component of Torchlight is coming, whether or not there are any features they can talk about and when we can expect it.

Yes, to elaborate. They have strong armor on their torso and a helmet so it requires around a clip from an AK 47 to take them down. Also they have shotguns which kill you in one hit.  "
That's crazy.

 Hmmm. A question for Runic?

How about: Will there be more than 3 class types in the MMO version of Torchlight?
