Games That I Played / Completed in 2016

An attempt to keep track of everything I played in 2016.

List items

  • January - December 2016

    Played on PS4

Throughout this year, I continued to check in with FFXIV every month or so. My guild has mostly dissolved, so I just play with randoms now, but I still have a good time. With the announcement of the next expansion, I need to put in some more time to finish the storyline from patches 3.3 and 3.4.

  • January 2016

Completed all main missions and side ops on PS4

  • January 2016

I can see why this is popular, but it's not for me.

  • January 2016

    Completed on PS4

  • January 2016

    Completed on PS Vita

  • January 2016

    Played on PC

I hope to come back to this at some point and finish it. FFVI was one of my favorite games on the SNES.

  • January/February 2016

Playthrough #2 (Death March) on PS4 (Completed)

    Hearts of Stone expansion (Completed)

One of the best Western RPGs I've ever played. Great storytelling.

  • January/February 2016

    Played on PC

Wow, what a difficult and amazing game. I love it, but I don't see myself ever finishing it. That last level is way too punishing.

  • February 2016

    Completed on PS4

This game is, at various times, very lonely and sad but also very charming. A sort of mystery game, where the main character takes a job as a forest fire lookout in a national park, and experiences some strange events. The main character's only other point of contact is another fire lookout, which he speaks to over a walkie talkie. The dialogue is the real star here, and both voice actors give great performances.

  • March 2016

    Completed 100% + DLC on PS4

  • March 2016

Completed Remastered version (Hard run) on PS4

This remains one of the best games I've ever played. It looked great on the PS3, and the remastered version looks even better.

  • March 2016

    Completed Uncharted 1/2/3 on PS4

The HD versions of these games look great. I enjoy this series so much, and it was a lot of fun to revisit them (especially UC3, which I haven't spent that much time with).

  • March 2016

    Completed Episodes 5 + 6 on PS4

What a fucking depressing game. Jesus. It was interesting to play characters from a minor house in the GoT world, but going through the last few episodes really lowered my opinion of the series. There was one choice towards the end of the series that just seems forced, and it nullifies any meaningful choices that came before it. It seems like the game's creators relished torturing these characters, and as a result, I lost any investment I had in them. There's a major problem with a game's writing when it makes me shout "Fuck you Telltale!" at the television. Not recommended.

  • April 2016

    Completed on PS4

I would have appreciated a remastered version, or at least the Scholarship Edition of the game.

  • April 2016

    Completed on 3DS

  • April 2016

    Completed on PS4

A very good Souls game, with lots of neat references to the original DS. Some very cool boss fights. Highly recommended.

  • May 2016

    Completed (Moderate run) on PS4

    My GOTY so far...

Naughty Dog has outdone themselves. I am really looking forward to their next project.

  • April - May 2016

    Completed on PC

Update: 5/13/16 - What a great JRPG. I'm really enjoying it, and I'm looking forward to playing SC and Trails of Cold Steel.

  • May 2016

    Remastered Version completed on PS4

I love that this game finally has trophies. Such a great strategy game. The anime WW2 storyline is really something special.

  • May - June 2016

    Finished Remastered Version on PS4

It's a better looking Shadow Complex. Same game, same dumb as hell story.

  • June 2016

Blood and Wine DLC completed on PS4

This is a great send off for Geralt and the Witcher series. I loved 99% of it, but fuck that last boss fight on Death March.

  • June 2016

Completed normal playthrough on PS Vita

  • June 2016

    Completed 100% on PS Vita

This is a fantastic game. I love Vanillaware's games, and the studio's beautiful art is really on display here. I also loved the interwoven storylines, the fun combat, and the world building. I can't recommend this game highly enough.

  • June 2016

    Completed on PS4

I like the art style, and the combat/strategy elements, but the random events and character deaths with no warning really put a damper on my enjoyment of the game. I invested a lot of renown in certain characters that would then die seemingly out of nowhere. It reminded me of Oregon trail, but without the hunting (which is bullshit too, because I would run out of food all the time). So, some good things, but mostly annoying things. I'm not sure I even want to play the sequel at this point. Not recommended.

  • July 2016

Played co-op on Steam (love that summer sale)

  • July 2016

    Completed 100% on PS Vita

An excellent dungeon crawler with an interesting "fruit ninja" swiping mechanic. The gameplay really gets you involved, and some fights can be quite difficult towards the end. Highly Recommended.

  • July - August 2016

    Completed on PS4

I love the piano soundtrack and the snowy world. The gameplay borrows heavily from Chrono Trigger, and the story from FFX. It's a nice homage to older JRPGs.

  • July - August 2016

    Played co-op on Steam

This game is a lot of fun with friends to back you up. I'm not sure how entertaining it would be if I played it solo.

    Space Trucking FTW.

  • July - September 2016

Completed Main Storyline on PS Vita.

GK is a very addictive SRPG. I'm enjoying it a lot. Kind of grindy, but the multiplayer keeps things interesting.

  • July - September 2016

    HD version completed on PS4.

I still enjoy the RE games from the Gamecube era. This one requires more inventory management than the first game, which can be annoying at times, but it's not game breaking. RE1 is the superior game, but this one is interesting and fun to play. I always end up feeling sorry for Rebecca, as she goes straight from this frying pan into RE1's fire.

  • August 2016

    Completed on PS4

This is a great follow up to Human Revolution. Jensen is assigned to investigate a terrorist cell in Prague this time around, while dealing with the fallout of the aug incident from the first game. Prague is really cool to explore, and the hub is larger and more dense than Detroit. I had a lot of fun playing through it, and I can see myself going back multiple times like I did with HR. Highly recommended.

  • September 2016

    Completed on PS4

This is a fucking weird game... some interesting puzzles and good visuals, but almost a carbon copy of Limbo... until the end, where it goes off the deep end. Best moment of 2016? Maybe, but definitely the weirdest moment.

  • September 2016

    Completed on PS4

This game is one of my all-time favorites, and it's always enjoyable to play through it again.

  • September 2016

    Completed on PS4

As a huge fan of RE4, I had very high expectations for this sequel at the time it released. While it remains a flawed game today (wonky partner AI, inventory redesign, etc.), I found it much more enjoyable the second time around. Chris punching the boulder is either a watershed moment or a jump-the-shark moment for this series. I can't decide which.

  • September - October 2016

    Completed on PS4

This game really pissed me off until I realized that I could roll/dodge out of the way of jumping zombies. There is barely any tutorial, so they don't explain any of this. I found it out by accident... Normal zombies seem way too powerful, and can take you from full to almost dead if they grab onto you. The inventory redesign takes some getting used to. The game seems designed to be played in co-op, which is a nice option, but I'd prefer it as a separate mode...I don't think I'm feeling this game at all, but I want to give it a chance, so I intend to try and finish it.

EDIT: The instant death QTEs in this game are aggravating. There's nothing fun about dying 10 times in a row to some bullshit camera angle or wonky sliding mechanic. Fuck this game, seriously.

EDIT: I finally forced myself to finish this piece of shit game. I don't think I've been this pissed while playing a game since fighting Titan Hard Mode in FFXIV. In summary, fuck this game.

  • September - October 2016

    Completed Bioshock 1 on PS4

    Completed Bioshock 2 on PS4

    Completed Bioshock Infinite on PS4

I love this series so much. I am really enjoying playing through these games again remastered for PS4.

  • September - October 2016

    Played on PS Vita

This is a great game on Vita. The UI takes a little getting used to, and there are a few game breaking bugs (hopefully they will fix them), but I'm still having a great time with it.

  • September - November 2016

    Played on PS Vita

I'm really enjoying this game so far. It's a mix of Persona and the LoH series, and it's a lot of fun on handheld.

  • October - November 2016

    Played on PC

Despite the technical issues, and some questionable choices by the dev team, this AC installment is still fun to play through. The absence of certain gameplay improvements in later installments is noticeable (why can I whistle a guard over from corners but not ground cover?) but not game breaking. It's not the best AC game in the series, but it's also not the shitshow everyone thinks it is.

  • November - December 2016

Completed MSQ on PS4 (Special Edition)

This game remains fantastic. I've put countless hours into it on the PS3 and PC, and I still enjoy revisiting it now. One of the best games Bethesda has ever made.

  • December 2016

    Completed on PS4

A kind of bizarre mix of different elements - a road trip story, dungeon delving straight out of the witcher, kingdom hearts combat, chocobos and final fantasy hunt marks - all mixed together to make a bit of a clunky mess, but also a very fun game.

  • December 2016

    Completed on PS4

I loved this game when it came out on the PS3. It's an expertly crafted take on the Thief series, with a dingy port city setting, a royal assassination and revenge plot, and some really cool combat. The masquerade ball really stands out among stealth level design. I'm having fun revisiting this world.

  • December 2016

    Completed on PS4

The art direction in the sequel is a step up from last gen. The combat feels better and more fluid. The AI is much more aware of you this time around, but the stealth system still works well. I'm enjoying the story, and Emily's powers are different enough from Corvo that it doesn't feel like a retread of the last game. Very fun so far (high chaos, murder everything that moves playthrough).
