Translating Gamebomb.ru

Gamebomb.ru is a freaky, mutated version of GiantBomb.com from Russia that I discovered while GB was down. Unlike most clone sites this one instead of just copying all of the Giant Bomb content, just took the basic structure while providing it's own reviews, news and videos (that are mostly stolen from youtube), there is even an updated logo and redrawn review avatars. All would be well and good if their original content was on par with Giant Bomb, if not in quality but at least in style, but it is far from it. To show what I mean I will translate a review of Brink, a game developed by Splash Damage and published by Bethesda Softworks, the only problem is that Brink is still a month away from release. There was no leaks of it and as far as I know review copies have not been sent out yet. So let's jump into this mess:

No Caption Provided

So that was that. Here are some translation notes. Dude clearly can't distinguish between protagonist and antagonist. He has no idea of how publishers and developers work. Compares the game to a slew of different games, some of which are completely different genres. States ridiculous claims of how shooters have to entertain the player. and finishes it all off with a French-ism meaning "in bad taste". Hope you enjoyed this little journey into Russian gaming journalism. If you want to see more like the 3 star review of portal posted months before game's release or anything else tell me, I'll be happy to translate it.

P.S.
In the comments there is actually one poor soul who tries to defend writing reviews based on trailers and other info. Let God give him peace of mind because he certainly needs it.

Is this site run by one guy? I can't find a single review that has a different guy reviewing it.

I like their version of the bomb logo. Maybe Giant Bomb should steal it for a little payback.

If you can read Russian you can probably register an account there, if that counts as invading.

Ok, what if we all make accounts and just move in? Continue using the forums as we do here, in English. Essentially we annex them.

You don't even need to read Russian. I just registered and I know nothing about the Slavic alphabet, let alone the Russian language.

How many sites ask for a home number nowadays? I know it's not unheard of, but it can't be too common.

Edit: And let's not plan an actual, 4chan style site invasion.  Doubtless the mods and staff will find it less than humorous.

I remember when we first discovered that site a while ago. Didn't they even fly the OG GB bomb on the banner instead of that updated one? Still it's weird. I like to think of it as Bizarro Giantbomb.

Yeah, pretty much. I mean it's not like that site is any actual competition. Also, even more hilarious is that no one would ever confuse the two as Game Bomb is totally in RUSSIAN and all. Amazing.

@gamebombru: Yeah I have one, why does the site resemble Giant Bomb? Is the black/gray/white color scheme the default when you install Django? I know it can be pretty customized to be unrecognizable from a stock install but what led you to be "inspired" by the look of GB?

You guys should hit up with Mike Tatum on becoming Vodka Media and the official Russian extension of the duder empire.

Also it's interesting to see this site existed back in 2008. With nothing but a flash movie, though unfortunately Archive.orgdoesn't cache it.

We have not used Django. We have our own software engine MZZ, which we developed ourselves from the beginning. The design is similar, but all the elements of our own. We like the structure giantbomb, so we got some ideas as a basis , but we plan to change and make your own.
We do not have in mind to create competition giantbomb . Our site for the Russian people who never go to giantbomb because they do not speak English .

Review written by a man from himself and expresses his point of view. There are genres that are negatively perceived in the region . Such as Russian did not understand American football or baseball , and never no one will buy the game .

Huh. That's pretty goddamn blatant. Given that they are in Russia, suing them is unlikely to work (have you seen the state of the Russian Courts these days!? You'd be lucky to start the trial 50 years in the future if you file now!). I would just ignore them. Given that their site is entirely in Russian, they won't really compete for the same audience.

It looks pretty damn weird. Might be a joke - well, I hope it's a joke anyway.

@gamebombru:  I would love to hear your excuse for "reviewing" a game you haven't played. You have absolutely no credibility if your doing that seriously.

If it's a joke, ok- I have my doubts though. There's no way you could know anything about a game from watching a few minutes of video or reading about it on developers blogs and such (as much as you may like some people to believe it, no- there is no way a reviewer can play a game 6months to a year before a game is out- that's absurd... even more so when he has no credibility).

If you actually had any integrity and wanted to get the truth out to people you wouldn't pretend to review games that for all intents and purposes don't exist yet. If you're pirating for reviews (which with Brink is highly doubtful as I haven't heard of any leaks) you not only have no credibility you have no respect for the medium.

Besides being pretentious (as even if Brink was out, your "review" for it doesn't actually hold any water. Things are just bad because you say they are- that is real journalism... right.) your review system is useless to non english speaking russians. Why don't you try reviewing something you actually played through in its entirety? Don't bother answering, I can tell you why you'd do that. You either want the attention for being so bad you'd stoop to reviewing a game not out yet, you're making a joke, or you don't know what real reviews are like. If it's C let me give you a hint- you have to have played through the whole game first before you have any credibility.

You don't just have credibility because you decide to review something. Credibility comes with time, when you give the medium the respect it deserves, and write a review that makes sense.

It's good to see though, reading comments in some of your reviews, that most that do read it see it for the absurdity that it is. If you weren't copying giantbomb you wouldn't have had so many hits as of late. You dont have anything to lose though, being that you have no credibility- so whatever I guess.

You can have your own opinion . It is your right . We do not pretend to objectivity . We do not want to be sure they liked the publisher or developer . Editor expresses his opinion . You can write your review . You do not know , he played the game or not . The fact that the game is not released , is not an argument . When the game is released , you can compare .

The only thing your statement does is admits the possibility your pirating for reviews. I'm glad you feel that's credible. Denying it only suggests you've never played the game (playing a demo at a game convention is not the same, and I'd hope that you would realize that- but then again you are writing reviews for games that aren't out yet, so who knows).

I don't have a problem with your opinions. All opinions are valid and the editor has every right to not like dance central, Portal 2, or even Brink. To suggest you are capable of playing these games legally 6 months to a year before they're released is absurd so your argument holds no water (the game will barely be out of alpha at that point in development).

It's ok, the site doesn't need to be held accountable for having no credibility and apparently not wanting it- especially not to me. Don't come on here, though, and suggest you want to make a valid game coverage source for Russians. If you did, your reviews would have integrity if nothing else. You wouldn't be reviewing games that suggested you're either breaking the law or talking out of your ass. Both of which your review structure suggests you could care less about.

And also, this has nothing to do with developers or publishers. While its rather sickening you could care less about developers, I totally get why you'd care less about publishers. Beyond that though this is about giving real criticism. You can't criticize something that isn't finished. Your own feelings of developers or publishers (however misguided) should have nothing to do with it. Criticizing a game that's not out yet is like criticizing Van Gogh while he's working on finishing his painting. That's asinine.

To be honest I don't think your "reviewer" even played the game. Football and baseball are different because people from other regions don't know these sports' rules, teams, players.. etc, so their enjoyment of such games is limited. However, rhythm/dance games are universal and everyone should be able to pick them up and enjoy them.

Since it's called the Cyrillic alphabet, that seems like a fair assessment of your familiarity haha. And it's good to know that the site is accessible, at least!

Also, I'm pretty sure quite a few people in this thread are being trolled. And fairly hard, at that.
