God of War III Review

4
  • PS3

Sony delivers a fittingly epic and savage PlayStation 3 debut for God of War, even if it does little to evolve the formula established by its predecessors.

Kratos. Son of Zeus. Ghost of Sparta. God of War. Pisces.
Kratos. Son of Zeus. Ghost of Sparta. God of War. Pisces.

Kratos is a man with serious anger-management issues--issues that he's been violently working out on the entire pantheon of Olympic gods over the course of the last two God of War games, dismembering, disfiguring, and disembowling every god, demi-god, and beast of myth that crosses his path. This hands-on approach to primal scream therapy continues with God of War III, the first in the series designed specifically for the PlayStation 3. God of War has always been a big graphical showcase for Sony, and to this end God of War III doesn't disappoint, using that extra horsepower to bring a phenomenal level of both detail and scale to the game's presentation. While the technology has advanced, the relative shortage of meaningful changes and refinements to God of War's vivisecting gameplay formula means that it's not quite as thrilling as the first (or second) go 'round. Some of these last-gen holdovers make the experience feel less cutting-edge than it might otherwise, though it's still plenty brutal enough to earn the God of War name.

Still playing fast and loose with Greek mythology, God of War III sees Kratos continue on his quest for vengeance against the gods of Olympus, now with his sights set squarely on dear old dad, Zeus. Of course, Kratos can't just walk right up to Zeus, gut him like a trout, and roll credits, so you'll spend most of the ten-or-so hours of God of War III trying to collect the mythical objects that Kratos believes he needs to finish the job. Of course, on the way, Kratos will face off with, and usually murder, whatever significant figures of Greek mythology he didn't already turn into a red smear in the first two games, all in the most unflinchingly graphic, Verhoeven-esque way possible.

It's called God of War, not God of Friendly Handshakes.
It's called God of War, not God of Friendly Handshakes.

If God of War III is your introduction to the series, there's a brief video that will basically catch you up to speed, though at this point, all you really need to know is that Kratos is an angry jerk, and pretty much everyone else he encounters is a vindictive, condescending, double-dealing jerk. His bottomless anger seemed justified in the beginning, but his continued insistence to pursue his vengeance at the cost of, basically, the entire known world makes it hard to conjure up much compassion, and makes him seem more like a petulant child than an unrelenting instrument of righteousness. The line between anti-hero and villain can be razor thin, and I occasionally found myself feeling more like I was the antagonist in someone else's story. Kratos is a consistently sadistic son of a bitch, and it's been his sole character trait for so long that certain turns in the story feel unearned. It's hard to tell exactly where the series will go from here--not to say that the ending is anticlimactic, but its gestures towards closure seem... tentative.

The gameplay experience that wraps around this revenge tour doesn't venture too far from the rhythms of the previous God of War games, focusing primarily on contained group fights, mixing it up with some traversal sequences, some lever-pulling and box-pushing puzzles, and some really huge boss fights, with plenty of quick time events to highlight the game's penchant for cinematic flair. The combat is agreeably fast-paced and intense, and I found the default difficulty level to be the almost perfect, providing a hearty challenge while rarely becoming teeth-gnashingly frustrating.

 Say
 Say "AAAHRGH!"

In addition to the standard-issue chain blades, you'll unlock a series of weapons and abilities as you progress through God of War III, all of which can be upgraded using the red orbs found inside both treasure chests, and your enemies' chests. I found it kind of odd that two of the alternate weapons you pick up are variations on the basic chain blade motif, which compelled me to pretty much ignore them in favor of the more distinctive Nemean Cestus, a massive pair of lion-headed gauntlets that favor impact over range. Regardless of your weapons of choice, success in battle in God of War III ultimately comes down to diligent use of Kratos' dodge and counter abilities, as well as knowing which of Kratos' plentiful attacks to use on specific enemies or in specific situations, with a certain eye towards crowd control.

Save for a handful of eye-catching sequences that make unique use of the Icarus wings, I found most of the traversal stuff not necessarily bad, but something to fill the downtime in between the administration of savage beatings. For as terrific as God of War III looks--and it is easily one of the best-looking PlayStation 3 games out there right now--there's something vaguely mechanical about the way Kratos shimmies along ledges and swings from his chains.

Similarly, the quick time events are implemented in such a way that I sometimes felt they were drawing my attention away from the flashy camera moves and gruesome acts they were intended to highlight. It's all the stuff that you expect from a God of War game, which I suspect is the very reason why parts of the game feel kind of perfunctory. It's like the developers had a mechanical understanding of the beats they were expected to hit, and focused more on nailing that stuff than pushing the experience somewhere new.

Fighting a Titan is like fighting a mountain that hates you.
Fighting a Titan is like fighting a mountain that hates you.

These issues, however, hardly define the experience of God of War III. No, God of War, as always, is all about vividly grotesque ways in which Kratos fells his enemies, and an incredible sense of scale as you take down one impossibly leviathanic enemy after another. Aside from the flight sequences I mentioned earlier, the most amazing moments in God of War III for me revolved around the Titans, the huge, primitive elder gods that preceded the Olympians. Acting as both enemy and environment, the Titans are the best example of God of War III's capacity to make you feel simultaneously powerful and insignificant, as the camera zooms out from a standard third-person view of Kratos to a perspective that makes him look like a flea on the Titan's back, all in real-time, and all of it looking incredibly sharp. Kratos himself features an impressive level of detail, both during gameplay but particularly in cutscenes, to the point that the other characters can look a little crude by comparison--which, really, says more about how good Kratos looks than anything else.

The beautiful rendering of Kratos' ugliness is what made God of War III a compelling experience for me, despite of the bits that felt unnecessarily slavish to the God of War formula. Even if it's not the best God of War game, it's unequivocally the best-looking God of War to date, and it makes for a wicked showpiece for the PlayStation 3.

Are people really getting this upset over a simple video game review? Honestly, do people really care that much?  To make things even more comical, people are bitching about a 4/5 score. It's one man's opinion and it shouldn't have any impact on your own views of the game.

All of this nerd rage is pretty funny though. Keep it up duders.

Aww come on guys.

It's God of War 3. It's not that important a series for the system. It's not like it's Zelda or anything.

Sweet.  This review pretty much sums it up perfectly.  God of War 3 is a fantastic game, and one that everyone should experience (granted they have the stomach for it), but it is in no way perfect.  Five star ratings should be reserved for the true gems like Uncharted 2 and Guns of the Patriots.  I loved the game, but at times I felt there were needless mistakes or poor design choices.  One section in particular ( SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.) felt poorly designed and tacked on at the last minute.  Overall, though, great game, incredible graphics, and a nice story that made me actually feel bad for Kratos, asshole as he may be.

The switching weapons mid-attack thing was annoying. I kept doing it accidentally. I don't even know why anyone would need to or want to do that. To show off? There's certainly no gameplay justification for it. You can spam some of the new moves they added (arrows, combat grapple, battering ram) with impunity. They completely chopped out most of the built-in weapon combos in favor of this freeform  system of chaining bigger moves together and it falls flat. Instead of feeling like you've mastered something, it feels like you're coloring and just trying to stay within the lines. The other God of War games didn't have the best combat system, but this is definitely a step backward.

i thought it did a lot of new things to evolve.
first off, it made the alternate weapons really good alternatives, linked them with the different powers to make it much more seamless, and allowed you to switch them to chain different combos together. the new special abilities like the hermes boots are great new features. just like gow2 implemented interesting new time puzzle mechanics, gow3 implements some interesting portal-like puzzle mechanics as well as even echochrome-like mechanics.
there are the new amazing titan battles, which also means the graphics are insane. the story telling is more diverse- as well as the environments explored- you are constantly seeing new and interesting things.  the music and audio in general is incredible, all of the voice work is fantastic. i just....i can't imagine this getting less than 5/5.

i feel like, if gow1&2 never existed, everyone would still be saying wow what an incredible game, instead of saying its amazing but not completely different from the last two. the series has always been TOP KNOTCH, and offered far more in terms of gameplay than anything else in the genre. i think people are WAY to hard on this game.

Finished this about 15 minutes ago, and I have to say I'm a bit bewildered by the 4/5 score. If you ask me, God of War III is a textbook example of what a five star game is.

Still, a nicely written review, Ryan.

I have to admit my intiial reaction to 4 stars was of anger, but after having finished the game I have to agree with Ryan. It was a great game, visually phenominal, it just lacked a little...I don't even know how to put it. This is coming from a person who bought a launch 60 gig PS3 with this game in mind over all others. I don't know if my expectations were too high or what, it just didn't quite live up to what I had hoped. Still fantastic, still a must play, just not the savior system seller it's made up to be.

I must say, I disagree with this review. They did all they could do with the game without making it not feel like GoW. The combat was much improved. Grapple mechanics(L1+O), item power bar, easier streamlined magic, quick weapon swap, actual fun and useful new weapons, etc.  I would also disagree with the reference to QTEs, I felt the complete opposite...the placement at the sides of the screen allowed me to pay attention to the action...I guess if you have bad peripheral vision it could be an issue. I guess if you played Gow1 & 2 right before 3, it  kinda "feeling the same" could affect the experience, but most people haven't played a GoW in awhile so wouldn't have that issue.

The one thing I am absolutely surprised by in this review though is the lack of mention of the easy puzzles. Puzzles in 3 are much easier than the first two games...however I do think that was a choice by the devs to make the games pacing better, 3 definitely has the best pacing of the trilogy because it is not bogged down by long, difficult puzzles.

I disagree with the review, not saying its wrong, cause ultimately it is an opinion. Just thought I'd share my thoughts on the game.

Look at Ryans animation by the review. I think four stars from this guy tells me he very much  likes this game. in fact any game he gives 4 stars to I would check out.. Not that I am going to play this game. The graphics work and such really wowed me that I saw in the QL's. But it pretty much ends there.

Any game I do favor that Ryan gives a 4 to would please me. I know he is conservative in his scoring. I like that, actually.

Having just finished GOW3 I can say it is an impressive game with way better pacing, combat and set pieces (compared to the other games in the series). Yet somehow, I still like GOW2 more. It's like It's like in the MGS series I prefer 3 over 4.

Great review, Ryan. I am personally leaning towards a 5 for my current experience with it, but I very much understand your points. The one point I most agree with is your observation that the QTEs don't let you properly focus on the action, instead making sure you activate the contextual button presses. That is annoying me so far, but I am still really loving the game.

I cannot believe how many reviewers whine about how the core gameplay didn't change enough. Dude's, it's the 3rd damn sequel. It's like going into Halo 3 and complaining about it being an FPS.

This game DID improve on the formula from GOW1 and 2. Like quick weapon switching that becomes part of the melee. Other weapons that actually work in combat like Hermes Boots and the Bow. It' all seems minor but these things make a huge difference in how players can play. And the new grapple system. L1 plus Circle.

Now you also claim that some of Kratos's turns don't feel justified. Uh, yes they do. I'll explain why

Honestly I think this game was scored higher than it deserves.  This is the videogame equivalent of a stupid movie like 2012, the only thing going for it is it's production values.  The graphics have improved but the story has gotten worse, and the gameplay is as stale as ever.  It still has block pushing, lame environmental puzzles, and repetitive mashy combat to pad out it's length.

I really don't think sticking to the God Of War-formula is necessarily a bad thing for a God of War game, and I don't think anybody is going to convince me otherwise :)
Ryan is as always hard with the scores, he's got a good review reflecting his opinions on God of War and these types of games, but I differ from him, so this review does really nothing for me.

After seeing how he handled the challenges in Dante's Inferno, I have my doubts about his abilities in games like this, so I kinda don't think he should be the one to judge if they are good/bad games, when he really hasn't shown that he handles them, perhaps a more skilled gamer like Jeff would have a different perspective, but we'll never know since Giantbomb never gives two opinions, which I think they should do. They are a bunch of gamers, with more knowledge than most of us, but with the tone of the site I think it would be fitting to see reviews more like discussion between the editors, with points and counterpoints. As some have already mentioned, Quick looks and the bombcast does a better job at giving the readers/viewers an impression of a game, a review is more from the point of a guy how writes about a game he liked, hated or really didn't feel one way or the other about, which can be misleading for people with everything being a subject of personal taste. Traditional reviews are perheaps not the best format for Giantbomb. Just some thoughts.

Most highly detailed video game characters ever:
1) Kratos
2) Aphrodite's left and right.

I felt like the game started insanely strong, but after Tartarus the best moments were never topped.
Still, really awesome and I haven't touched the challenge modes or Very Hard yet - or played around with any of the cheat items.

" There were sections in this that literally had me playing with my jaw open throughout their duration. However, I really feel that there seem to be some discrepancies in the quality level throughout the game (the titan fights have clearly been lavished with a lot more polish than some of the game, in particular a few of the rather dull corridor run battle sections).  It's a great showpiece for what the PS3 can do but, as a game, it's just God of War. The combat has been refined (the grappling in particular stands out, as does the new L1 circle combo which I feel demonstrates that the developers really knew what worked and what didn't in prior games) and it's definitely a step above the last games in the series but the design philosophy and gameplay those were built upon is starting to show its age. Damn it can look good though (a couple of the boss fights look better than the CG from the first 2 games - both in scale and execution).  Also: Kratos is a real dick. This and Heavy Rain are one of few games that make me whince and feel genuinely uncomfortable at points but for slightly different reasons. "
The entire Chronos battle......  Holy fucking donkey shit man. I mean, JESUS. "
Dude - YES. So annoyed I overwrote the save I had just before that point, I would play it again and again (and to show it off to people). Frankly, nearly all the boss fights (minus one giant rather clichéd insect)  have been staggeringly awesome.

It's just a shame the rest of the game is plagued by invisible walls, contrived methods of having Kratos stand still while a camera pans to show you a puzzle with a time limit thus giving you less time to complete it and a rather weak last third (giant box temple is no Pandora's Temple and is filled with the kind of annoying forced battle segments that plagued the end of  Chains of Olympus). I also get that this is the dark third act, but I was kinda hoping for more lush, gorgeous GoW 2 style vistas.

Definitely a 4/5 over all for me (one that reaches 3/5 levels of quality but starts off with and hits 6/5 in places).

MASSIVE WARNING

This entire comments section has been overcome by a great variety of GOW fanboys raging about how this game deserves 5 stars. As a result, I have given a template of how these complaints work, so you don't have to look for them as such.

OMGOMGOMG WTF IS GOW DOING WITH 4 STARS? GOW ISN'T SHIT! THIS IS A LOAD OF BULLSHIT! RYAN IS A CRAPPY REVIEWER AND SHOULD BE SACKED FROM GIANTBOMB. LONG LIVE KRATOS!

If you want to see a more extended approach towards how Ryan is wrong, please proceed. If you have something better to do with yourself other than watching them haters hate, please leave this comments section and never come back.

I can see where Ryan is coming from in this review, but I guess fans of the series (which includes me) don't really need too much of a change because it felt so right for us. It just needed to be huge and epic and satisfying with which I can go back to again and again.

Weakest of the trilogy, for sure. God of War 2 was the pinnacle of the series -- a series which has served its purpose and shot its wad.

There is more to a review than a pointless star rating. xox

" i hate to say but i told you so. I called it a couple of days ago. 4 stars was max FROM Ruan. First Ryan is not that in GOW or Kratos as character. Based on quick look he was that into it and from short comments he game on bombcast i knew 4 stars is max. It's okey i know he tends to be hard on scores, and that's his thing. I just hope he finished the game and not stopped at half of it. "

Lol considering he got that stuck in Dante's Inferno I could easily see him getting held up during God of War. Then again he probably didn't jump straight into Titan mode, it's been damn hard in parts...

@Bloviator: Why the heck are you playing a game if you'll be glad when it's over??

" I don't think the game is as familiar as people say it is. Yes it draws on the same style, art, look, themes and gameplay -- but the combat is WAY more tuned, the setpieces are a step above anything, the controls are much better, the QTEs are much more thoughtful, and overall it balances the God Of War "experience" into a much more cohesive package.  It's a 5 for me, but 4's a great score all the same. "
i am about 3 and half hours in (after Helios) and dude, im loving the game, but besides the initial 45min with gaea and poseidon...its a god of war game, just prettier...or a lot prettier.
