Originally playing in the All American Football Conference it wasn't until 1950 when the 49ers joined the National Football League. They play in the NFC West Division along with the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams.

The term "forty-niner" is taken from the gold miners that migrated in large numbers during the "Gold Rush" of 1849.

The height of the Niners dominance was during the 1980s led by coach Bill Walsh,  Joe Montana and Jerry Rice where they won a total of four Super Bowl rings. It wasn't until 1994 with Steve Young when they won another Super Bowl.

Some notable Niners include: Terrell Owens, Deion Sanders, Steve Young, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.
