This game turned to amazing when Nanako died, and then went back to "pretty good" when she woke up. I'll see what happens, but I was still dissapointed. "

Definitely agreed on that part. When I first went through the game I couldn't believe the balls that Atlus had to kill off Nanako. I too thought it was a bit of a cop out for her to recover but ooh well. "
I'm Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way. It's such a forced story twist, and her revival made no sense either. Everything else about this episode was great though. Lots of good jokes despite the dark turn. "
Not that it makes her revival any different for those that play through the game on this path, but it is possible for Nanako to not come back at all depending on the choices you make. And that's pretty fucked up.

Great episode, still can't really believe that not only is this thing going to be played to completion, but we're closing in on 500 comments on this episode alone. Crazy stuff.

So, it's essentially an in-door-bonfire. Incidentally, I am currently reading a book by Rousseau in which he explains why todays "human life in society"  is miserable compared to that of the "wild humans" (basically: less knowledge = less worries). From what I can tell, he probably would have liked the kotatsu idea because it's a somewhat animalistic concept in it's social function (like delousing).

@atomic_dumpling: Yes. Traditional Japanese houses used to have a kind of open fire place in the center of the most important room; it is called an 'iori'. This fire place was usually the only heat source in the house and was also used for cooking. In a way, you could say that the kotatsu is an evolved form from that fire place sans the cooking function.

If you're interested in philosophy and the distinction between the human and animal, there is a quite recent and very provocative essay written by the famous continental philosopher Giorgio Agamben. The book is called 'The Open'. I highly recommend it.

Oh, JEFF AND VNNY,

You should check over by Nanako's pillow to get an item. It apears after you finish finals.

Thanks, I might actually check that one out but it's kinda steep (17€). I bookmarked it for later.

"Btw, anyone have any wisdom on why oranges and kotatsus are this apparently great combination?  Is it just a random Japanese tradition that doesn't have any particular logic? "
So in Japan the Kotatsu is one of the traditional symbols of the winter season. For those who still don't know: a kotatsu generates heat underneath the table surface. The table surface is attached on top of a kind of blanket or futon. Of course, the idea is to put your legs underneath the blanket to warm yourself. This relates to the fact that Japanese houses traditionally are not very well insulated and can be quite drafty. Now as for the orange: there is a translation error in Persona 4. In the original Japanese version they speak of a fruit called a 'mikan'. This fruit is similar to an orange but is smaller and is perhaps more akin to a tangerine. The mikan is thus considered to be a variant of the mandarin orange (just like the tangerine). In Japan, the mikan is associated with winter because of the fact that it is filled with necessary vitamins for the winter season. However, there is something particular that links the mikan and the kotatsu, apart from their primary association with the winter season. The mikan is a fruit to be peeled, of course. And as such it is thought to generate a pleasant group activity; that is to say, the peeling and eating of the mikan is considered to be something best enjoyed with company. Now, the kotatsu is often the center piece of a family's home in the winter season. Japanese houses are generally very small and often have only one available room that is used as the living and eating (?) room. Therefor, the kotatsu is often a place of gathering for the family. Not only does the kotatsu itself warm the members of the family, but, of course, the family members warm each other with their presence. Combine this with the mikan and it should be obvious that they facilitate a gathering of the family and also generate the right conditions for good conversation and overall family bonding (family s.linking?).  Perhaps I'm a bit to rough and unnuanced in this exposition, but there you have it. If someone want to correct me on something, please feel free to do so. "
Good explanation, but calling it an orange in English seems to have been a localization choice rather than an error.

Still can get the bad ending hehe the only thing changed will be Namitame lives and Nanako is in the hospital for the rest of her life.....

Also Yosuke is a douche and there should have been a option to punch him in the face for he was just thinking of Saki and not Nanako or he would not have been a ass at you for saying wait a second..... She is your family and if any thing he should take your words for you where closest to her.....

@Eirikr: I guess you're right. Then again, that would make the whole "hey, we should get some oranges, too!" even more random and not any less incomprehensible for a Western audience. Or perhaps that is part of the charm of Persona 4 :)

I had a sad thought - despite J&V being on the route to the true ending, the bitching won't end. It will stop for an episode, or two, but not forever. We're going to find guys posting how hard Jeff and Vinny suck and how dumb them and their mothers are, because they did something WRONG. They already don't have chance (as far as I remember) to have Naoto on Christmas Eve, so there is one hot topic to complain for some morons. And there will be dungeons, so global happiness won't ensue. So the crying, dicking, giving orders instead of advice and doing EVERYTHING in place of just playing the damn game will go on, and on, and on, and on. Ech.

While I feel kinda sad that I probably won't relive some of "my" moments from P4 with you brothers in comments and Jeff and Vinny, I'm not whining, because I'll see shit I didn't on my playthrough, and experience it in a different way than on youtube. Still, it's pathetic that some people identify rancour with acting like a twat.

Why were people even hoping that Jeff and Vinny would invite Naoto over for Christmas Eve anyway? You know they would never do that.

Haha.Yes,they are not safe from the bad ending yet. They just survived "the most ambiguous part" to avoid the bad ending.I hope they wont stuck while choosing the true culprit because it is easy to figure out even someone who never play P4 can easily suspect that person to be the culprit.

The death scene was even more depressing with Jeff and Vinnie's stuttering to boot. Then again, the revival scene was awesome. "Ah... You're not gonna sue right? She's alive and everything."

The Seekers of Truth campaign has begun! So we're halfway through the game, right? Awesome! I can't wait to see what Namatame's persona looks like.
Anyway, I get the oranges bit now from reading the comments. At my house we called them "satsumas" which I think is a company that distributes that type of fruit in the US around Christmas time. They'd always go down in the toe of the stockings.
Great episode today, guys.

What i don't get about the normal route is that when Nanako comes back the group never thinks about the fact that they were about to kill Namatame because of it when she wasn't dead in the end.

Great episode. And I gotta say, those dialogue options made so much more sense when watching this, as opposed to when I was playing it myself ...  First time around, I got completely suckered into one of the bad endings.  Investigation team, GO!
