Can anyone tell me how long the story discussion lasts? I'm okay with occasional spoilers during these, but I don't feel like having the entire stories ruined.

I really hate when Patrick does his little singing softly under his breath thing. Conversation halts and awkward silence ensues. He reminds me of a guy I know that everyone is annoyed by but no one will come out and say.

Oof, could not disagree more with them on disregarding Portal 2's co-op. It's the only mode in that game where the puzzles are interesting. And that Valve weaved such a cool story and conceit into that mode was such a pleasant surprise.

Not only is it great co-op, I think it's head and shoulders the best of the year. In no other game does playing co-op so fundamentally change how the game is played.

I agree. I played through the co-op with a random internet stranger in one sitting when it came out and loved it. As far as the puzzles go, I thought they were much better in the co-op. The singleplayer puzzles seemed much more like learning the mechanics step-by-step while the co-op just gave you puzzles that used said mechanics.

Should've at least made the list.

Oh god the Portal 2 co-op discussion is heartbreaking. Playing that is maybe the most fun I've had with video games this year.

The arguments against Portal 2's co-op were insane. The puzzles were so brilliantly designed..I just...I don't understand. The only thing I can assume is that that TNT is what killed it for them, and that had nothing to do with the game: it was their ineptitude at the puzzle mechanics. Which is fine I guess. It's just frustrating, because to anyone who appreciates the brilliance of the puzzle design, I can't imagine anything else being the best co-op experience.

You guys need to talk about Deus Ex more. The story in it was pretty fantastic. The game's primary mechanic was exploration and it told Jensen's background story through side missions and investigation. The primary story was great because it was pressing the idea of the prejudice and no one was really a villain. People did evil things but those people weren't evil, and that is something that pretty much all videogames miss. But yeah, I do agree that Portal 2 would beat it out. But I mean contrast the two! They both tell the story almost entirely through the environment with the different being that Portal 2 is on a very singular path.

I love Bastion. I own two copies of it (360/Steam). But up front, the story wasn't that great. The narration was great. The endings were neat. The soundtrack was awesome. The story was just go grab stuff to fix world, guy with soulless eyes steals stuff, go get stuff again. Yeah there were some neat things done with it, but the emotional impact of the game is entirely due to the soundtrack and art direction.

On Halo, I'm with Patrick: delete the Flood from the fiction. The Flood is not the fun part about Halo.

It is neither Incredibly Strange Shadow Planet nor Incredibly Twisted Shadow Planet.

I guess I had a better experience playing with someone who is about the same level as me when it came to solving them.

I kinda get why Patrick and Ryan would be down on it if what they played on TNT was the only time the played.

Vinny: Red Faction Guerrilla still had a little ways to go to be an exceptional game.

Yup, and that little ways was one press of the directional pad to the "Multiplayer" option. Best multiplayer this generation other than possibly CoD4, and Armageddon not only shit on the open-world brilliance of Guerrilla, but also eliminated its SUPERB mutliplayer COMPLETELY.

Yeah, everything they said against it didn't make sense to me. And I hate to say "well, you're just not good at the game" but I think it's true. Getting stuck on a puzzle and then working it out with another person was SO MUCH FUN.

I think Portal 2 Co-op is co-op of the year. There's also the fact that free DLC was given out post-release. What other companies GIVE you DLC? I had a blast with this start to finish.

I guess the guys didn't spend a lot of time with LBP2. Not even mentioned for co-op, which is a shame.

Third Strike was the most lovingly re-created, updated and re-crafted and fixed HD remix of the year.

@patrickklepek when you said Code Veronica was a shitty game I verbally gasped at my desk, then realized I needed to adapt and get over myself. VIDEOGAMES!!!!!!!!!!! good podcast.

Judging co-op is going to be really subjective to the people because you're experience is just as formed by the people you're playing with as the game itself. If you had an awesome experience with portal 2 co-op, you should give props to the person you played with. (awww)

I totally do. I played it with an awesome person. But Jeff saying that the puzzles weren't as good, or whatever he said was just crazy. I'm not upset over this, I am just a little irked.

The story in Arkham City is ridiculously bad. Half of that stuff makes no sense and is not credible in the least in this semi realistic world Batman is crafting. Protocol 10 turned out to be the worst thing ever, the only saving grace is the Joker stuff and even that is a stretch.

Nailed it! 150% agree about Dragon Age 2. I was borderline angry after spending $60 on a game I had such high expectations for. I played as primarily a healer class; I highly recommend that if you like pressing one button over and over. I beat a boss while making a sandwich in the other room and blindly mashing one button. And O what great diversity in the set pieces. Ready to leave the city? NOPE! You're back in 5 minutes.

Jeff can't stop talking about Deus Ex's story in the review podcast and the written review, yet it's mentioned in passing by Jeff without much enthusiasm and struck down by Patrick in a sentence (who has never mentioned his experience playing it before).

Guys in the remake of Third Strike: For Matching Service, they actually added stuff to it. They didn't just give you the old game again. Third Strike is the best HD remake objectively. it was the MOST remade. Of all the grief Capcom gets for this Ultimate and Super nonsense (which they have been doing for years) the way they lovingly treated Third Strike and Magic Sword/Final Fight downloadables is worth noting.

I can't help but think that Deus Ex is getting shafted in these deliberations.
