I really hate to rant, especially about an average game, but here we go :p :

I love Giantbomb and everyone on the staff but this was one of "those quicklooks". I'm four missions in (about halfway through the game) so I've definitely seen more of it but I still thought that the writing was pretty funny from the beginning, not every line of course. It just sounded like two grumpy guys shitting on something just for the sake of it ala Batman Arkham Asylum quicklook. And I say this with love :). I thought that the writing was as stupid and juvenile as Saints Row 3, which they love, it fits here even more in the context of Deadpool being a juvenile asshole.

And as some other people have pointed out, you can make a lot of games look uninteresting if you're just mashing buttons and not paying attention or trying to keep your combo meter up, etc. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the game plays well. It gets A LOT better as you buy new weapons and combos but even then it's still decent at best and super janky. But Ryan definitely wasn't trying.

I do realize that I've ranted about a game that doesn't deserve it, but I've just gotten back from a long work day I needed to steam off :)

Still love you guys. Even if it's not your best work, I still choose to spend my time here and will continue to do so.

Saints Row 3 is also quite self-referential but it executes on its humor way better. Execution is key here and it's what separated the Call of Duty games from many of the imitators you saw this generation. Granted, I also didn't find Saints Row 3 to be as funny as the Bomb Crew did but I definitely feel that they did a much better job than what I've seen of this Deadpool game. Of course humor is a very subjective thing so if you like it here then more power to ya but I'm gonna stay the hell away from this. To be fair, the rest of the game (gameplay and graphics) seems fine (though the camera could use some work). Not great or terrible, just average, which isn't a bad thing but there's not enough here to make me interested in trying it out.

Admittedly I am not a big comic guy, but it always seemed to me that the popularity of Dead Pool just came out of nowhere one day and then all of a sudden I started seeing people talk and pics of cosplay DP everywhere and I never understood where it came from. If this game is at all an example of Dead Pool's personality and writing I think its starting to make sense to me, this character is made for 15 year olds. Even if the timing were not off and they slowed down the pace of the relentless one liners, everything seems rather immature and basically fell flat (I like a good dumb joke, but this was all stupid dumb jokes). That dick joke at the end was especially terrible . If that side of the game were good and genuinely funny then maybe I could over look the lack luster generic combat like I could with Spec Ops or Bioshock Infinite, but it doesnt. This game doesnt look like the worst game in the world but there is nothing about it that makes me want to play it even if it goes on sale

This game isn't any different then all the other juvenile (Duke)(Saints Row the third) smartass comments and turd joke games....Deadpool is a juvenile comic character and acts the same in this game....the controls are not that bad.....It isn't Ryan's cup of tea.....I like it and I have laughed out loud a few times....does that make me a juvenile (YEP!) but I am 53 years old and have played almost every game on the planet x2.....to each his own. Play on gamers...play on!!

I like the idea of a superhero who makes bad decisions and does stupid stuff like sings in an elevator and only survives because of luck. Deadpool doesn't seem like that hero.

what are these "other games" that have done humor right? they often say humor in a game is hit or miss and that other games have done it better. Which games?

I remember thinking Portal 2 was the funniest game I'd played. Sam & Max does well at breaking the fourth wall. Frobisher Says could be pretty funny in its own way.

Ryan spams the same move while Jeff asks if there's any kind of dedicated combos in the game.

Ryan - "There could be."

Lol, I can understand being too lazy to play through a mundane level but how hard is it to open up the menu to give a definitive yes or no answer. At least be funny if you're going to make games look worse than the dreck this apparently is.

It's like, when Duke Nukem makes those jokes it's funny and ok. But Deadpool, it just seems forced and... bad.

I wonder what the Norhie award will be like this year?

No... just no. Duke Nukem was NEVER funny and his "jokes" never qualified as such. Just went back to the old game and that's just as badly written as Duke Nukem Forever. Still an awesome game though, but Duke himself was always a piece of shit

I think that's the point though, Duke's portrayed as a peice of shit, the world he lives in is an action movie satire. The fact that the game doesnt acknowledge how bad the jokes are makes it at least somewhat funny. This game however points at the jokes and expects us to laugh.

Exactly.

This seems no worse than any other Marvel game produced this generation or the last. Personally I believe the supposedly "groundbreaking" Marvel games like Spider-Man 2 or Ultimate Alliance were nothing majorly special.

I don't understand why Ryan of all people was given this to QL. Absolutely no offense to him but this is the same guy who admittedly didn't like the combat in Arkham Asylum because he didn't get it, and only really began to realize the possible depth in Arkham City. I mean despite mentioning it, he didn't use that B counter move even a single time in the QL. Character action games really don't seem like his thing.

Yeah. Definitely wrong guy to play this. He doesn't pay attention to anything and is as jaded as can be.

I'm sure they picked him just cause he's the marvel fan in the group.

Yeah. I think it's telling that we've had three great DC-based games this generation (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Injustice), but Marvel remains something of a wasteland. Perhaps there's something to the rights holders self-publishing their own properties instead of licensing them out...?

Yeah, you can't go half way on comedy stuff. Comedy dialogue and music over a very generic third person action game isn't enough. No amount of crackin' wise can cover up the fact that you're pretty much just running around fighting dudes with boring mechanics the entire time.

The game isn't all that bad. It's not worthy of 40 bucks, but it's good fun if you're in for a laugh. That is, if you're not a humorless old grinch/diva with questionable standards. Especially Ryan. I have no idea why he's still working for giantbomb. It seems as he wants to do anything else but play games.

I've played worse superhero games than this, like Edge of Time. At least this game controls pretty well ( I don't know why giantbomb calls this clunky, they have no fucking clue what clunky is I guess ) and is pretty entertaining. It is generic, not very good looking, and quite linear, but it's fun. It could have ended up WAY worse than what it is.

I'm all in to bitch and mock bad games like Aliens: CM and War Z, but this game deserve credit for being quite different, funny, and very surprising. Credit given where credit is due, that's all.

I played through this mission they played through and some more. To say it's "good" would be a stretch but it isn't bad either. It's passable for sure though.

I think that's the ultimate insult with this game. It's not good, but it's not bad, either. It's not particularly funny, but it's not particularly unfunny. It is wholly unremarkable in every aspect except its Deadpool-ness, but it could have been so much more.

I blame Activision for butchering High Moon during development.

It's kind of hard for me to watch two guys talk about Deadpool as if everything recent is all there is to say about him. You should read Deadpool Classic, it's emotionally charged and genuinely funny; the defining characteristic not being self awareness, but irreverent witticisms. Summing up Deadpool with this game or any of his recent comics is like trash talking Star Trek because of The Final Frontier, Nemesis, and the most recent Star Trek: The Video Game. It's unfair and more importantly, uninformed.

Maybe I'm off the mark here, but I think it's a little hypocritical when Jeff and Ryan gripe about low humor given the poop conversations and sexual innuendos that occur regularly on the Bombcast. I know it's different when you have 4 or 5 friends goofing around vs something scripted - but still they go there often for humorous effect (which I'm totally ok with, I have nothing against low humor), so maybe they shouldn't be overly judgmental about the odd dick joke.

@gave1: Portal 2 springs to mind as a game with very well done comedy, even if the game isn't a "comedy" overall. But yeah, I can't think of too many either. There's all the old Lucasarts adventure games of course, but they're sort of more subdued chortle than loud guffaw.

I really hate that Daniel Way's Deadpool has become the one to be portrayed in all video games.

It was he alone that turned Deadpool into a meme spouting, fourth wall breaking clown. Other writers portray him more as a badass mercenary that just doesn't give a fuck about anything.

I had to stop watching halfway through as it became clear that the guys' opinion on this just doesn't match up with mine. I chuckled with mirth several times, the combat seems totally fine, and I like this genre of game quite a bit. Wonder how much of this is post-E3 blues?

I agree. Game seems fine. Entertaining enough for a playthrough and doesn't play like poop. Not talking about GB in particular but a lot of people act jaded or over critical about video games.

I could really use a big dumb fun game right now as I am playing The Last of Us and replaying Dark Souls. This however, does not seem to be for me. Comedy is one of the hardest things to write. First, you need a good writer. Borderlands 2 picked up some game journalist and it's comedy was, well, bad. As a writer, you write what you know. No shock a game journalist from a website fills the game with internet memes on their first game. Second, one of my favorite comedy shows was Monty Python. One of the golden rules of comedy is not to overstate it. Even the best crude jokes are inferred. The combat looks to pull from many sources, but falls short of hitting any of them. Not as fluid as Batman, not as precise as Ninja Gaiden, and not as stylish as Metal Gear Rising. Seems like a swing and a miss. I hope this sells for them and I am just not part of their target market. It does look like they put a lot of hard work into it.

Started playing this earlier today. It definitely has it's moments and the gameplay isn't quite as bad as they make it out to be in the quick look, unless of course you're comparing it to something super polished like the batman games. I would say it's definitely passable and enjoyable enough to fly through the gameplay on the easiest difficulty, though I wouldn't suggest buying this full price.

TLDR: Wait for this to drop in price, some of the comedy is definitely worth a weekend.

I'm glad a character like this exists, even if the execution isn't perfect for everyone 100% of the time.

I think there's something healthy about being comfortable lampooning your own licensed products, and a lot of industries could probably benefit from something like it. I still haven't seen Deadpool REALLY realize how dumb Deadpool is, so I get the impression the writers think he's cooler/funnier than he actually is or fancy themselves the Marcel Duchamp of comic books.

Maybe I'm a bad person. The Nolan North call made me laugh. How often do you see anything like that in a game?
