@Vashyron: If FF13 was still a new and relevant game yeah, sure. You do get this place is partly for talking about video games right? How is it wrong to talk and compare video games exactly?

The only thing that bothers me about this game is Dante's face. Seriously, he just looks annoying.

@Animasta: I'll just post what i did to the other person who said this

When games came out years ago and did the same shit better it is important. Especially when this game is directly related to it and means we aren't getting more of the better ones. This game doesn't exist in a vacuum

When a game is worse than it's predecessors that is a problem. people can still like it and I hope they have fun but that doesn't change things

It's simply a review. We all know his history with the series and we all know his stance on this game and the games prior in the series. This one spoke to him and hit the pleasure centers in his brain. He explained that logic in the review. You have every right to disagree with that logic. But calling it out doesn't change that logic. It doesn't change the review or the review's score. Your opinion and Brad's opinion will have limited impact on the sales and reception of this game. The world will move forward. More games will come out that you'll like and Brad will like and you guys may see eye to eye on some games and disagree on others. And all of that is ok. There is no reason to be emotional over reviews. In most ways they are meaningless. Especially to those that have already come to a conclusion about the product being review. It doesn't sound like that review was for you as it sounds like your mind was already made up. Which is fine. Just leave the review alone. Everything will be fine and no one will care about this review in a month if not sooner. It'll all work out.

After watching this Quick Look, this seems 1000 times more interesting than any other Devil May Cry game. It must suck for DMC fanboys who are so blind and ignorant to change that they can only enjoy the boring crap that is familiar to them instead of embracing something new and interesting.

You see, that's the sort of thing that makes you as bad as the fans that hate the new stuff and love the old stuff. Surely you can understand why fans love the old games so much that they have a keen critical eye on the new one, right?

@JasonR86: So your point is we have different opinions. great thanks for that

I was simply pointing out a flaw in Brad's method. It would be like thinking a girl is the most beautiful person ever when her better looking older sister is right over her shoulder. The other games did this stuff better and the fact Brad hasn't taken that into account at all is a fault on his part

I love the twisted logic that this game existing is why there isn't another 'true' DMC game.

I was genuinely ready to think this was average from the first 7-8 minutes of this quick look, but the animation style and characters started winning me over, unsure what that says about my tastes though.

By the end of this look, I'm pretty sure I'm getting this, I think it looks great. And Brad only Brad'd once!

As someone who would fit into the group of people who were sure this game would be garbage months ago, it's been a big surprise reading the reviews and watching the gameplay. I've come around on the game though. It might not be everything I wanted from it, but it seems like a great game on its own, which is good enough for me.

To comment that previous fans of Devil May Cry should not take issue with the changes in this entry because they still have other franchises as spiritual successors, why then is this game called Devil May Cry if not as an attempt to lure that fan base in in the first place? Wouldn't branding it as a new IP be far more honest if creating a different game was the developer's intention?

Only for those decisions to have some weight to them the moment they saw various gameplay videos and played the demo, right? In case you haven't noticed, there was A LOT of pre-release stuff related to the game over the last year or so (lots of behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, gameplay videos, dev diaries), and there was also the demo released last month which was pretty close to the final product. I think there was enough for the fans to figure out that it just wasn't for them, and they weren't willing to risk $50-60 just to figure out if it's better than their expectations. Especially when the HD Collection is out to satiate their needs.

Also, I wish you were a bit more clear of the people you were attacking in regards to their reactions. I mean, sometimes the crazy people and the ones with legitimate things to say are one and the same, and attacking them makes you look like you're attacking everyone else that dislikes/doesn't care for it.

Wouldn't you say that newer fans that are now approaching this game is doing so because it's more familiar now as opposed what is "new and interesting"? I don't see how the core sentiments are any different, merely the direction to which the game may be catering.

Knowing nothing about the game, I have to say that I find the face of this character to be terribly off-putting. He has this sort of "I'm a smug self-centered little twat that you're going to punch in the face after thirty seconds with me" sort of look to his face. Reminds me of Cole, in the second Infamous. I found his face to be really off-putting (and he *was* kind of a tool).

It's the fact that he has the same un-moving mouth half-open look on this face in every single closeup. Not a kind of dumb I can get behind even though the combat looks alright.

I am very tired and I have spent most of this Quick Look lying in bed nodding off. Sleeping during a Quick Look is really odd as you lose track of what is being said and start hearing a conversation that isn't real. It's weird. I should take a nap.

I have never played, never been interested in, and never understood Devil May Cry. For me, this is a way to open a lot of people's eyes to a series that they've never experienced before. Yes it's not "old" Devil May Cry, but that's precisely the point.

Also Dante's redesign is 100 million times better than old Dante. New Dante looks like a human being. His coat could do with better animation though. 06.32: Nice job Brad. ;)

I presume Dante must be secretly British because he's got that Union Flag on his coat, although I read that's Ninja Theory's way of pointing out to the UK Government that this is a British developed game, and therefore deserves tax breaks.

@Blimble: Sure, FF13 is older, and I should probably be referring to 13-2 or 13-3. And yes, this is a place to talk about video games, but that HAS to be a back and forth conversation, in which, at least in this little thread, has been you reiterating the same point twice as of this response.

My point is that (and that of others) which you haven't understood is that this game isn't meant to be compared to the DMC series prior to this. Sure, it have the same name (Devil May Cry) and the same basic foundation of game play and the main players are also the same. Great. But that is all that is really comparable. The finer mechanics, as expressed by many, are different. Combat is slower and less hectic at times and there are no styles and so on. You can compare them to each other if you want and you will probably disappointed, especially if you wanted a game just like the old one, but the idea of this Devil May Cry is a fresh start. A new beginning with a new Dante in a new world.

I could try and compare FF6 with any other FF game just because they share the same name, but that will always lead to disappointment. Instead, I try to garner what enjoyment I can from it (or not if I'm completely turned off by it as I am with 13-2 and 13-3) and express my disinterest in it if I feel so inclined and move on. If that leads to a civil conversation between the new vs. the old, fine, but I'm not going into to trying to convince people they are wrong in their opinions.

@Turambar: New and interesting to Devil May Cry, at least, which is a franchise I've never liked. Obviously this game isn't reinventing the wheel.

@Nettacki: There were people who hated this game from the second it was announced. The pre-release whatever and the demo didn't matter and there is this minority of loud people who were gonna hate this game no matter what. That's who I was referring to.

If you're looking for this hardcore Devil May Cry player perspective, we're not really out there to provide that... We're not running reviews for DMCfans.com."

That quote is great to understand why there might be a disconnect between hardcore fans of a franchise and reviews for any niche franchise's sequels. And honestly, there are fan sites that do specific reviews for that kind of player, like for the Hitman or Splinter Cell games.

If you're that hardcore DMC fan, maybe give Bayonetta 2 money instead if this insults you.

I'm not going into to trying to convince people they are wrong in their opinions.

I've said multiple times I'm fine that people have found enjoyment in this but it doesn't change the valid comparison and complaints

Well aware of that. It was a half-rhetorical question because the idea that people of a franchise who sees their franchise turned into something they dislike should not voice dissent seems absurd to me, regardless of whether I agree with them or not.

Sure. When I said "new", I only meant new in that sense of being different than other Devil May Cry games. I guess I don't understand the various idiosyncrasies of the previous Devil May Cry combat systems enough to get why this is so different. But what interests me the most (besides the combat looking pretty fun) is the aesthetic. The game just looks super stylish and all the cutscenes seem really well-animated and voice acted, even if the actual content is a little dumb.

Brad listed everything I absolutely loved about the previous DMC games right off the bat. It was so ridiculous and over the top in a self-aware way (at least 3 was) that I fucking adored the style of it; not to mention the first game was just absurdly good gameplay-wise at the time (I don't think anything even came close to doing what that game did at the time, but I may be misremembering.) Then the third game pretty much perfected the combat formula.

After playing the demo for this a while back, I think it's totally fine. The combat may not have as much depth (but I don't know for sure, I haven't played the full game,) but it managed to be quite fun and evoke roughly the same kind of feel the old DMC games had for me. I'll miss the ridiculous nature of old Dante, but this game seems like a game I can have a bunch of fun with.
