@PulledaBrad: Patrick's not too bad in this quick look. The only bad parts were a) asserting that the style system and others are new to this game and b) telling DMC fans to play Platinum Games' titles. The latter was actually not bad as it sounds, they did admit to not being fans of the franchise and didn't do this in a way that insulted those who were. The staff may be improving in this regard.

However, I am perplexed as to what exactly made this game a favorite of Brad's. Mostly he came off as deflated and failed to pick out anything in the game that he felt strongly about, aside from the silliness of the story. I've followed this game closely for a while, though, so I have a very strong bias.

It didn't seem that Jeff or Patrick were too impressed by the zany beats of the story or, well, anything. If they had put in Devil May Cry 4, I'd expect a similar reaction to the superior combat and a scoff or two at the cheesy humour, I'm wholly unconvinced that this game is anything new or worthy of its received praise.

It takes me back to a weird place thinking about Devil May Cry 4 and the hype surrounding that sequel, never to truly live up to its expectations. For years, the fanbase wondered about what they'd do to make up for its failings and most seemed to consider DMC4 a good start. That in mind, you can't help but feel the way Capcom went, outsourcing the game to the other side of the world and mocking the hardcore fans, is a bit of an insult. After MML3, RE6 and now DmC, I'm close to swearing off that whole publisher as the Japanese EA.

Long story short, Capcom alienates its fans once again and the internet laughs at them simply for voicing their discontent, calling them entitled or sissy cry babies. Maybe George Lucas got into the wrong industry...

You know, i've been looking forward to this for a while, but seeing it in action via a quick look makes me really, really, REALLY want it. I haven't been interested in a DMC game since the disappointment that DMC2 was (though I still did have fun with it), and this one has me chomping at the bit to play it. Totally getting this on PC next week.

I find it fascinating how many people are trashing the old games and praising this one. What does this one do that the old ones didn't that is so drastic? Other than being dumbed down in terms of mechanics and execution. (Which is largely irrelevant if you played the other games casually)

@AssInAss: I am a DMC fan, but I still bought this. Finished it about twice now and it totally is a true DMC game. The fanboys disliking it, haven't even played it. Calling out random things like how the combat isn't as deep as previous games. It's actually deeper. The fact that it's easier isn't a problem, since almost no one has even unlocked DMD or H&H as if you're a true fan, you'd know those modes is what DMC is all about. Because let's face it. On the normal setting, DMC3 and 4 were laughably easy as well.

I just feel bad for people if they are missing out because they can't open up to a different take on the same principle of game they so (claim to) love.

Gonna play this on the PC. I have not played a DMC game since the very first one, which blew my mind at the time. Just lost interest / forgot about it after that. I like the way this game looks, its very pretty.

My point is that (and that of others) which you haven't understood is that this game isn't meant to be compared to the DMC series prior to this. Sure, it have the same name (Devil May Cry) and the same basic foundation of game play and the main players are also the same.

So the game is similar in many regards (many similar moves, the game is fast paced I don't know where you are getting it isn't, many mechanics are brought over with some slight tweaking, it is the same type of game and it is the next in the series) and in the quick look they compliment it for these things and others that the games did and they did it better yet they shouldn't be compared.

I don't remember them saying it was better. They said it was the same ground work and then built it up to be it's own thing. Also, the only thing they said was better about the older games, as I recall, was that the old games ran at 60fps and none of them really played beyond the first one and kinda were turned off from the series till now.

I love people here that ignore valid criticism of anything ever and just tell people to "Grow up" or say that they're an "entitled fanboy who can't accept something new." It's ridiculous. Same to the people buying a video game out of spite. You are literally as bad as the people who don't like that this game based solely on Dante's new design.

I still can't figure out where the awesomeness and the 5/5 is? It looks like a Action-3rd-Person-Hack&Slash-Game.. yeah. But were is the 5/5? I don't get it. 4/5, ok! But I doesn't see the spectacular THING that this game is SO special.

Oh BTW: Patrick is always explaining TO MUCH stuff! I want to see gameplay and don't want to hear "YEAH I TELL THE AUDIENCE THE EXACT SAME THING THAT YOU TWO TALKED ABOUT FOR 3 MINUTES JUST TEN SECONDS AGO! SO HERE IT COMES: "YOU KNOW ...... YOU KNOW...... YOU KNOW....... YOU KNOW? YOU KNOW!"

My favorite part of DMC4 was when they made you play the whole game over again in reverse because they are dick designers.

I loved DMC3 dearly, but beyond that game I have no idea where all this fevered reverence comes from. FFS if they put out a System Shock 3 that was a plain shooter you wouldn't see this much howling.

I haven't been swayed by anything Ninja Theory have done so far, but this looks pretty cool. I just might pick it up.

Damn, this game is getting a huger backlash than both Hitman: Absolution and Splinter Cell: Convention combined. I'll hold judgement until I've played it myself. I will say this, I liked both the latest Hitman and Splinter Cell game, even though both games were different than the core series.

"Brad's review, our perspective on the game, is very much from this very specific viewpoint of; maybe at one point finding the series interesting, losing the thread, not necessarily playing a whole lot of this kind of videogame. And if you're in that camp with us, we're basically saying this looks pretty interesting. If you're looking for this hardcore Devil May Cry player perspective, we're not really out there to provide that... We're not running reviews for DMCfans.com."

That quote is great to understand why there might be a disconnect between hardcore fans of a franchise and reviews for any niche franchise's sequels. And honestly, there are fan sites that do specific reviews for that kind of player, like for the Hitman or Splinter Cell games.

If you're that hardcore DMC fan, maybe give Bayonetta 2 money instead if this insults you.

That quote is perfectly legitimate and fair for them to say, but for me that quote could be repurposed for literally every major review of the year, and is why I feel like written or scored reviews need to stop. The quote is basically saying "Hey, we don't know much about this, we don't care to look at it too closely; it's a streamlined romp and that's cool with us." which, while, hey, is in their right to say, is also why there's an ever-increasing enthusiast press-core consumer base divide, and why some might think written reviews are a little useless these days.

@Marokai: Reviews are not for people who already know they're going to buy the game. I didn't play the old DmC games and never really had an interest, I was dead set on ignoring this game and quite frankly had no idea it was even coming out until the I read the GS review either yesterday or the day before.

Reviews are not to cater to the fanboys who are mad it's not the same game as DmC3. They are objectively reviewing the game, not giving it a better or worse score based on their love or hate of the previous games. The people who are pissed about the review wanted their negative opinion justified, not to listen to the opinion of someone else.

@Hef: You misunderstand me, I think. What I was getting at was that it feels like their actual collective getting-together-and-talking-about-it opinions come off as completely different from how reviews sound, and this isn't a new phenomenon; as if their reviews are written in this completely different dumbed down average-joe mindset like that quote before. As if the reviews section and the rest of the website are completely segregated from each other and done in "mainstream consumer" mode and not as their actual selves.

There's been too many times where a game comes out all hot, and the critics fall over themselves praising it, and then in the ensuing months, the game quietly disappears from the pedestal it was put on, or worse, just outright bashed as "Yeah maybe it wasn't as mind blowing amazing as I thought" once they've had more time to think about it.

It's a problem that's exacerbated by the quote below. Giant Bomb is ostensibly a site that, in Jeff's joking words a few years back "skews harder edge" and yet, the reviews are still done like some mainstreamified, page-view grabbing, lowest common denominator, newspaper style, as if Giant Bomb writes their reviews to be placed in a column in USA Today, completely separate from the site's actual main audience. It's a problem that's less notable when they're just named in an Editor's tag, but more glaring when they're on audio and video hours and hours in the week "tellin it like it is."

My feeling, and again this is just my weirdo personal view, is that the reviews are written in this deliberately less challenging "enjoy it for what it is" mindset and intentionally less critical than they would be in any other format, which is especially bizarre to me considering the audience this site has. The main audience of this site is willing to sit through hours of video and audio content a week, and the entire mantra of Giant Bomb as an entertainment unit is "Nuh uh, corporate guy, people really do have long attention spans and we have the numbers to prove it!" and then they just go and write reviews in the anachronistic GameSpot it's-like-a-newspaper way every week.

Devil May Cry 1-3 was played by millions of PS2 owners, the character of Dante became a Playstation hero, Devil May Cry 4 came out in January 2008 in Japan then a month later everywhere else, by this time DMC4 had sold 2 million copies (which is a very respectable amount for 1 month).

I understand you arn't focused on Devil May Cry games and that's fine, just don't tell me having a famous video game character completely re-written happens all the time and to get over it. It doesn't happen, and any changes almost always keep the character and their universe intact. Even the new form of Lara Croft is the same Lara just an earlier story.
Patrick suggests this is to appeal to a wider audience than the meager number of DMC fans who still care, i just don't see how this off shoot Dante universe appeals to modern gamers any more than the originals did, which were still selling well.

Also, Jeff, put my money where my mouth is and get Bayonetta 2? Buying a new expensive console for one game? shut up.

I was simply pointing out a flaw in Brad's method. It would be like thinking a girl is the most beautiful person ever when her better looking older sister is right over her shoulder. The other games did this stuff better and the fact Brad hasn't taken that into account at all is a fault on his part

Not really. This is its own game, made by a different company. He does not have to even bring up the past games at all and thats fine. Reveiws are not about comparing a game to other games, they are about telling us the consumer if the game in question is good or not, and that is exactly what he did. Dont bash his methods just because you are upset that this game exists.

Like so many others have said, It is just an opinion. Get over it

Actually, Devil May cry 3 IS a prequel since it shows young dante and vergil.

Anyway on this one, the combat just seems lacking compared to the previous ones.

No lock on and 30fps limit really hurt it :(

Guess its time to look for a WiiU if bayonette 2 will be exclusive.

Get over it

This doesn't change the fact that not bringing up the fact that other games in the series did everything this did, but better. I mean it's easy to just ignore other games in a franchise and say this one does it just fine. Modern Warfare 3 looks great when I ignore the games before it. Also I'm glad you just assumed that he's upset that the game exists and that's why he is saying these things about the review. He's just stating the fact that the other games did things better than this one and that should be taken into account. Not everything is subjective and even though it's just an opinion it's still an uneducated one which is never a good thing and shouldn't be condoned.
