Quick Look: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai HD Collection

The enduring legacy of Dragonball Z never ceases to baffle me, considering it's basically the anime equivalent of popcorn. Cheap, plentiful, but not at all substantive.

Man, I forgot how many Dragon Ball Z games there are.

Budokai 3 was so fuckin great! Getting this. Burst Limit is the game you are thinking of Vinny. It's also pretty good. The rest of them - not so much...

I hate that in a lot of these HD collections you have to reboot to the entire game to choose which individual game you want to play.

I don't understand the Budokai 2 hate coming from Ryan. I remember it being fine. I actually think the first game was the inferior.

I was so damn disappointed by budokai 2 as a kid. It barely added anything and they included a boring board game path in between stages. 3, though, was amazing.

It doesn't sound like this stuff makes any sense!

Budokai 3 holds up surprisingly well. Shame Ryan couldn't get the hang of transformation stuff though and kept calling hyper mode kaioken.

These guys know nothing about DBZ, haha. That's what makes these so entertaining.

If you classify being able to rattle off multiple names from the series as nothing, you're far overestimating the general populace's knowledge of Dragon Ball.

Really bummed about the change of intro music for 3. The video goes along with the music cues, its just not right this way.

This kinda makes me wish I kept my Budokai 3 copy. That game is genuinely pretty awesome.

Those extended punching sessions in Budokai 1 drag on for so long. Not sure I could tolerate that these days.

Yep Budokai 3 still the best dbz game. Really sucks no-one has done one like it since, might be because most of the Budokai guys ended up working on Street Fighter 4.

Well great, now James Adomian has to play Goku in all future Dragon Ball properties.

How do you remember Pan being the Menu girl but not that you actually have to equip attacks and skills as part of the gameplay? Great quicklook though.

@eccentrix: I watch Giant Bomb videos on YouTube some of the time. If I am already going through my subscriptions new videos on YouTube and I see one of the Giant Bomb videos I will usually watch it then. I also sometimes turn on the videos while I am at work, which is a much worse computer and so the video on YouTube runs much smoother.

As a fan of fighting games, Budokai 3 was a big surprise. I hear Infinite World is better, but B3 is the closest thing to a legit fighter.

Lol this is the funniest HD collection ever, and I haven't even started the video. The reason the others exist is because those games are, a lot of times, classics with better visuals and (WE'D LIKE ATLEAST) framerates. God of war, silent hill, team ico stuff, zone of the enders. Even if not all of those HD remakes came out the best, there were good reasons for them. But this is like doing HD collections of Madden 2002/2004.

Wow, Budokai 3 holds up really well in HD. I think it actually looks a bit better than recent Dragon Ball Z games because it's still kind of angular looking because of lower polygon counts and that fits in more with how I picture DBZ in my head.
 
Sounds like they changed all of the music in Budokai 3, though. Don't really get why they did that.

Fuck yes. My childhood was DBZ. The last few...dozen games haven't been amazing. This is a great excuse to play Budokai 3 again.

Budokai 3 actually looks pretty fun

I love you guys but man, almost an hour of not looking up how to charge up... Also, confusing Hyper Mode for Kaioken then not realising the difference was pretty lame. Absolutely not a complaint, and the game doesn't show you that stuff in the story unless you do the optional tutorials, but still.
