Quick Look: Dragon Ball Z for Kinect

Man, character designs in DBZ are sooooooooo terrible.

Somehow the Over 9000 joke still plays, when it's delivered like that anyway. This is so good.

Also,

Dragonball Z is so fucking insanely stupid and juvenile. And that is everything about it that is.

A super saiyan beard would be pretty sick.

For a kinect game, this is reasonably well made I guess.

I agree with Ryan, the goofiness of DBZ was my favorite bit, as was the Cell Games. That was when they introduced Hercule.

Also, when I heard that it was coming with Goku hair, I was hoping it would be regular Goku hair, not Super Saiyan Goku hair.

I'm starting to think that there's some sort of huge government tax write-off for including Kinect support in your videogame.

And was the dialogue of DBZ always that cheesy? I know the voiceacting was better than this at least. One thing they do have down pretty darn well is the art style; just a shame that it's tied to a fairly lazy product.

Forget this garbage and play Asura's Wrath. I thoroughly enjoyed that game and it is even more over the top bonkers than this. Also not Kinect.

This looks like they just took the previous game and all they did was put motion controls onto it.

I was disappointed that the hair came with the game.

From Burst Limit onwards the games have always inserted that scene, and even re-recorded it every time. In fact, like all of these damn games are re-recorded. It's crazy.

I played this at a Namco Bandai event a few months back. This thing did not track my legs at all. Hearing more and more about the Kinect tracking issues, all things about this game and others make so much sense.

I still love slapping to shoot energy volleys.

How the fuck do they NOT let you participate in the beam struggles?

Those are the best part of the entire show. The one between Cell and Gohan STILL gets me amped every time I see it.

How many times have I seen Vinny fight Nappa at this point?

This quick look actually somehow reminded me that Dragonball Z was a pretty cool cartoon.
 
Remember when Yamcha, Tien and Chaozu got transported to that post-apocalyptic planet and fought those 2 random saiyans? That was a cool episode.

I was kind of hoping that when you power up you have to yell and when use the kamehameha you have to yell that as well. Way to miss a golden opportunity...

This quick look shows that dbz might be able to give dance central 3 a run for its money. But dc3 still has that time belt reference that still puts it over the top on the kinect.

So another hugely automated Kinect game. yay.

Get your head out of your ass. They both have played a lot of the games. Ryan loves Budokai 3, and so do I. There was an old GameSpot video about Vinny and how he owned a ton of the DBZ manga. They like the stuff. Granted it's pretty stupid, but in a fun way.

Give me an HD remake of Tenkaichi Budokai 3 for nex-gen consoles and I'll be happy for the next 5 years.

Now i love me some dragon ball z, but, like vinny, im feelin some major DBZ fatigue, just give me legacy of goku 1/2/buu and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 and im golden.

DBZ is such utter garbage. Just look at it! Toriama can't draw and the story is so dumb. It's so sad that this is what most Americans think of when they hear "anime".

@courage_wolf: From what I remember they were talking quietly amongst themselves, and Raditz was so confident in himself that even though he could see they were planning something he didn't bother trying to find out what it was.

Wow, the hate for the Dragon Ball franchise in here is insane. It happens every DB Quick Look and I feel the need to write a response every time (because I'm crazy). But I can't blame people given these poor yearly games. Yes, both anime series aren't perfect, but the DB manga is one of the most influential shonen properties in existence; the authors of One Piece, Bleach and Naruto have all cited it as a direct inspiration for their current mega-franchises. The narrative formula is repetitive, but that's shonen, and DB innovated here hugely in the 80s.

Then again, Z in particular (they did a little better with Dragon Ball) had a horrendous treatment in the US, from wrong or straight-up made-up dialogue (hey guys... you know that it's actually over 8000? Also, his name is Satan, not Hercule, and bad guys die and go to HELL) to replaced music, butchered scene edits, character personality changes, etc. It's bizarre, given that nearly every other dub (such as the excellent Spanish one) respected most of the dialogue and Shunsuke Kikuchi's score.

Anyway, as far as games go, yes, this is literally Ultimate Tenkaichi from last year with Kinect motions. That's it. It's pretty damn lazy. I will agree that it sucks that they're milking the franchise so poorly with these annual releases, and that if you have no interest in the franchise, it must drive you insane to see these year after year! Budokai 3 (excellent!), Tenkaichi 2 or 3, Super DBZ or even Hyper Dimension are all better choices for DB fighting games.
