When Jeff said it was made by Monster Games, it all started to make sense.  The menus and stuff look almost EXACTLY like Excite Truck and Excitebot's menus.

"Top-lane racer."  I've played enough of the original to know that riding the top lane is a mistake, especially if it's the second lap.  This game looks great.

It's been a looonnng time since I've played the original Excitebike. 
Why you'd want to stay in the top lane, I have no idea.  It's the two middle ones you need to use, going to the top or bottom only as needed for special circumstances.

Counting the Excitbike versions. There is the original, the wii version(this one).The gba ports on the ecard reader and classic nes collection, the arcade version and the n64 one. There's also one on virtual console. So 3 not including ports. and 7 including ports.

They did, although to be fair it had nothing in common with Excite Bike, besides the name.  It originally wasn't even called Excite Bike, it was just going to be a dirt bike racing game for the 64, but they decided to slap the name onto it to boost sales.
