I don't like to get involved in people complaining about the staff, but here's a point. Even if Brad is playing badly, at least Jeff is calling him out on it. Those mistakes at the start, Jeff straight up goes "Dude, what are you doing?" Not in a horrible way, but pointing out to him that it's not entirely the game's fault. Shortly after, Brad starts going on about something else and Jeff jumps to defend the game saying that he's just being unfair. In the first boss, Brad screws up a jump and starts to go off about why the mechanic sucks, then Jeff comes in and just tells him he messed up. Quick Looks should be a fair representation of the game, and although Brad's tone and attitude during this whole thing is of him simply not caring, Jeff seems to do a pretty good job of trying to give the game a chance.

That's just in the first 8 minutes of a 35 minute video, so yeah. My two cents and all that.

You nailed it. These guys are great entertainers, but their strong (and hasty) opinions don't always make for informative videos. Nice to see Jeff taking the high road here.

If the game remains a Wii U exclusive, I'll never play it to judge it myself. But judging by the quick look, the game looks and plays decently. Brad was just messing up, which happens in all Sonic games when a person is playing it for the first time, even the so-called classic ones on the Genesis.

I think Gametrailer's review was more accurate than Gamespot's. Again, going by what I've seen in this quick look.

I've never really cared for platformers, since the market was saturated with them when I was young.

I can't really tell why the new Sonic games are bad compared to the old ones. It just seems like a genre that just doesn't really fly anymore. What would make a good Sonic game? An endless runner, perhaps?

This looks ok, but there's way too much going on in the levels and not enough going fast. I will say though, if this really is from the lineage of Colors then the OST might be looking into. I maintain that Sonic Colors has one of the best soundtracks of the current generation.

My history with Sonic:

Adored Sonic back when he first came out (was totally smitten with the character design as a kid) and played the shit out of the first two games. I've never really played Sonic 3 outside of playing it for the Achievement in the Mega Drive collection on 360. I've played maybe 15 minutes of Sonic Adventure. And that was it until I played the shit out of Sonic Generations and loved that game a bunch. So, while not being a true Sonic fan, I still think there's life in the little dude yet. And this game seems A-OK to me, although I can't say I'll end up buying it, despite my love for Generations.

And with that said, I'll just leave this here and slip away again...

As a guy who obessed over the original games on the Genesis, would you say Sonic Generations is worth a cheap buy? I have some money burning a hole in my PC games pocket and Sonic might be the refreshment I need.

The Sonic collection will most likely be on sale during the Steam Winter sale in a couple of months, it was really cheap during the summer sale at least.

@mbdoeden: Sonic Generations is pretty fucking awesome, in both the 2D and 3D sonic gameplay-styles. I'm not the biggest Sonic fan ever, but I keep coming back to it all the time. Fantastic game.

I'm all for a good Sonic game...but really, whenever I get the "Sonic Itch," I just go back and play either 1, 2, 3, or Knuckles. It's held me over for the past 20 years or so. I don't think I'd want to play one with the "behind the back" view point.

Man...if there's a game that I wish would'ved stayed just as a simple "Jump on enemies, collect goodies, save your friends and defeat the bad guy" type of game with that simple plot, it's Sonic since...guess Sonic Adventure was the first terrible example of combining humans with Sonic? So cringe-worthy stuff...

Generations was worth it at full price. The last 1/3 are a bit shit ... but fuck, try and play through Chemical Plant zone and not have a good time.

In this you can tell Jeff is getting annoyed with Brad's insane lack of sense when playing video games, as he should. Watching Brad play this is just painful... Still a fun quick look though (and still love Brad regardless)

When I heard about this Quick Look, I knew it was Brad playing before I even came to this page.

I think the mixed reviews and that Youtube vid illustrating IGN's contradictory statements shows that there's a problem between the gaming press and the games they're reviewing. How much of the complaints is the result of poor play, and how much is actually the game's fault? That's why it's hard to trust reviews.

I really think more sites should be adopting an EGM-style review system, where multiple people offer their viewpoints. One person writing a review should not represent the site's opinion on a game.

Is it just me or is the video fucking up alot? Looks like its dropping frames or something? I've loaded some other quick-looks and only seems like its doing it on this quick-look for me. Weird.

@xymox: I've played through the whole game on 3ds (working on the hard levels now) and the frame rate is smooth. Note that I haven't used the 3D but that would definitely affect the frame rate since it is pretty graphically intensive for the 3ds.

As for the Quicklook it was pretty disappointing that Brad made so many mistakes, simply didn't care and blamed the game for most things. This in turn affected several white knights that jumped to Brad's defense and are just calling the game shit.

A couple points:

- Sonic games have always had precision platforming segments in which you had to slow down so running in these sections obviously messes with the whole precision aspect.

- In this game Sonic travels fastest when spin dashing which I never saw Brad do. By keeping the button held down you can spin dash forever (or until you hit a wall) and if you jump mid spin dash you can press the button again when landing to immediately spin dash without the charge up.

- The homing attack locks onto enemies (up to 3) while Sonic is on the ground or after a successful homing attack.

- If you jump past a locked on target and are facing away from them then Sonic can't use his homing attack.

- When wall climbing/running you can use the spin dash to give yourself a speed boost. Once when climbing and as many times as you want when running.

While I'm sure nobody will care about these points I just feel they'd help shed some light on some of the perceived "issues" that many have seen both in the 2D and 3D sections in the quicklook or in reviews on other sites.

After watching that quick look I think Sonic Lost World looks alright. Might pick it up down the road since it looks like a pretty fun experience.

I'm really interested in playing this. I find it interesting that in this game, Brad didn't want to release the run button, but in Rayman Legends he never touched it. Just an observation.

have we really been hoping for a good sonic game, though? I know I for one don't even think about the character until a new giantbomb quick look shows up and I shake my head and wonder how this series has outlasted so many other actually good game franchises.

even when the series was "good", with Sonic 1 and 2, it wasn't THAT good. why is there this reverence for this boring little blue hedgehog with a stupid voice.

He forgot he had the spin dash! In a Sonic game! Because he said he "didn't need it", after several minutes of slowly fumbling through levels.

I mean, I think pretty much all Sonic games have been mediocre to aggressively shitty for years now, but sleepwalking through a game like this won't make any game look fun.

I don't understand how this is the same person who is so good at SC2 and DOTA 2.

I played through and immensely enjoyed a Sonic game when I was, like... seven. Can't remember which one it was, since I played it on my cousin's Sega. Anyway, since then every time I've tried playing one it's been frustrating and unenjoyable, so I haven't felt as betrayed by the series' decline as many people seem to be. Instead, I get to be sad about Nintendo!

I guess I'm getting old, 'cause the concept of a Nintendo exclusive Sonic game seems deeply wrong to me, even in an age without Sega consoles.

Sonic soundtracks serve as a bit of a litmus test for me; if you ain't a fan, you and I are enemies.

I can't be bothered to spend $60 on a sonic game, but I can appreciate the tunes.
