Unfinished: Audiosurf 2 02/01/2014

Jeff hops on his wakeboard and grabs some gnarly air off sick drops in version 4.3.2.96026 of Audiosurf 2.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

I couldn't care less about the wakeboard mode, but there is some insanely good stuff on the workshop already. Can't wait to see what people do with it once it's fully released.

I enjoy these games, but there's not much point to music-based-generation games that use your own music when they won't just let you log into a music service and access your library. Obviously that is due to a lack of available API with them or something, but . . . what are the odds I'm going to have PHYSICAL music in this day and age? Or files on a computer? And in MP3 format? And sitting on the same machine that I'm going to play the game on? It just becomes a hassle to find, download, and store music on your system *just* to play this game.

If I could just say "here's my RDIO login, let's rock" that'd be fantastic.

Also, the music that comes in the game (linked from an ingame station or something, I think) is usually hideous unless you're about thirteen.

well i used skydrive and just have it sync my entire library across all my computer.

This comment made me feel better than I have most of my (legal) music on CD. Bought so many albums in 2013. Physical from now on, baby.

Go for it Jeff. Playing Pixies songs is always the correct course of action.

Just because of this I fired up Audiosurf 1 and just jammed on Mono pro. Audiosurf 1 is still a pretty great concept and game!

Extremely disappointing. I thought they were spending all this time fixing the system so that slow songs were still fun to play. They haven't even removed the ridiculously long wait at the end of some songs (that 15 seconds in the Quick Look they're forced to wait after the song ended).

Seems they've just been spending all the time working on that surfing mode that looks totally uninteresting. Super unfortunate. Hope someone is able to make a competent competing game that addresses these problems.

For the people wondering what primarily differentiates this game from Audiosurf 1 the answer is primarily the workshop support, and while that might not seem like a huge deal at first it is actually something that completely changes the game in a lot of ways, both the custom mods and skins are highly customizable and there are some amazing user made creations on steam right now.

Also for the record sounds and pretty much anything else you can imagine can be customized by skins, and there is in fact a Sonic skin on steam that not only has rings as the blocks, the main character model as ball-sonic but also have the proper sonic ring sound effect.

awesome game, though it can be a bit hit and miss. sometimes crazy, kinetic tracks are really boring, when more sedate ones make for a challenging experience. still love it tho.

As someone who just tested out the Soundcloud support: no you do not want Spotify or Rdio support. The compession on streamed music completely fucks up the algorithm to generate the tracks, so either the gems will be off beat, or the song will just be completely broken.

There's a gas station like 5 minutes from my house that has the Sonic ring noise for the cash register. I wonder how that even came to be.

I've got the Kickstarter USB drive though, and that thing is pretty rad looking.

Vapor City is indeed rad. "U Still Die" is eargasmic.

The 76 station by my place has a register that uses the ring sound effect. And here I thought the owner/proprietor was just way into Sonic the Hedgehog.

Just for the record the files don't actually have to be MP3 files, Audiosurf 2 supports pretty much all relatively popular music formats around, including AAC, OGG and FLAC.

Kinda bummed me out how similar it was to the first game. Not sure what else I expected really, and if it strayed too far from the formula of the original then it just wouldn't work, but I feel like I could just boot up the original and get the same out of it without having to buy a new game.

You would be correct. I have been a victim of autocorrect. That said, if you have audiosurf 2 you should try mono shinigami.

Too bad all of my music is in Spotify nowadays. Back when I played the first Audiosurf I had plenty stored locally, now I have nothing. So I guess Audiosurf 2 won't be much fun without my music collection.

Game's already made a lot of progress since the initial release. But turns out all I want to do is play Mono.

Yeah, most of the other stuff is too much for me, and it isn't something I could see myself playing that much to get good at the more complicated modes.

That is the experience of literally everyone I know who has ever played Audiosurf. I'd love to meet this mythical person that actually likes playing Pusher. I think the number of Mono variants that are highly rated on the Workshop backs up that sentiment.

I played Vegas a little bit, because I'm a scrub and whenever the board got super fucked I would just randomize and hope for the best. It requires the least skill of all the non-Mono characters. I played a bit of Double Vision, if only because I think the colour patterns were way easier because the game knows you have no ability to rearrange things and it cuts you a break because it's hard to coordinate 2 ships.

But yeah, fuck every other mode, and I'm not even that crazy about Vegas and Double Vision. The expectation that you can manage your gem board (through whatever abilities, or purposely not picking up certain gems) while also keeping an eye on what's coming ahead just seems completely unreasonable for someone who doesn't sink like 200 hours into the game.
